The 100 Greatest movies of the 80s #1 Aliens (1 Viewer)

11. Airplane! (1980)

Directed by: Jim Abrahams

Starring: Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Neilson, Robert Stack, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Peter Graves

Synopsis:
A passenger is forced to land a plane when the pilots are taken ill.

Great movie...a little lower on my list.

I may get **** for this, but I don't get Steve Martin. He's just not that funny to me. He's talented, but he's not very funny, imo.
I love Steve Martin, but his movies suck. The only one I liked was Roxanne. The worst one is Pennies From Heaven. Why the heck would I want to watch average dancers re-create dances that featured Fred Astaire, etc? For reasons that made no sense. In a truly depressing POS movie? The only good (great) part is the scene with Christopher Walken.
I mostly agree, but I do have a love for The Three Amigos. One of those that is “so stupid that I enjoy it” type of movies. And I guess won’t make Tim’s 100 unless it is top 8 (and I will eat my sombrero if that is the case).
SInce I can't stand Chase or Short, this was a huge no for me.

I loved the use of The Neverending Story theme in Stranger Things.
The production of the movie was a predominantly German thing. The German version does not feature the Limahl theme song, nor the techno-pop elements composed by Giorgio Moroder. It only features the orchestral score composed by Klaus Doldinger.

The regular 4k set includes the German version. I've never seen it and I think I'm going to have to eBay that sucker...

There's also a recently released $200+ set that looks like the book and has all sorts of goodies. But I'm not paying that.

ETA - Roxanne was very good too.

My 5th grade teacher took our class to the theater to see The Three Amigos so it holds a special place in my heart.

9. The Terminator (1984)

Directed by: James Cameron

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn

Synopsis:
A robot is sent from the future to kill the mother of the eventual leader of the human rebellion against machinery.

Listen and understand! That Terminator is out there! It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop…ever…until you are dead! - Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese

Just reading the above quote makes me want to see this film again after all these years. Such a great action movie, science fiction movie. One of the greatest popcorn flicks ever. A lot of people think the sequel was even better, and there’s something to be said for that mainly because Linda Hamilton becomes such a bad *** in T2. But the original is surely great. Casting, beginning with Arnold, is perfect.
No problem with this one in the top 10. Arnold is an icon as the Terminator. If you grew up in the 80's you know about the anticipation for the sequel. That's how big it was.....and T2 is awesome! I've watched both fairly recently. Still love em!

I’m in the minority but I like The Terminator more than T2. T2 is fantastic, don’t get me wrong. But the dark dread of the original is top notch. I’m almost 51 and still will watch this anytime I come across it.

And Airplane - probably my 3rd fav comedy behind Holy Grail and Dumb & Dumber.

What i remember from watching this the first time in the theater was the overwhelming relentlessness and inevitability. Don't think I'd seen anything presented like that before- hugely impactful especially while watching.

or

Nice, thanks! How does that not violate copyright law?
Well I have to say, I think I prefer the German version better. The original score dials down the kitsch considerably.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is awesome, and it will be a travesty if it doesn't make the top 100 here. Steve Martin and Michael Caine are both on top of their game in that one.

I prefer T1 over T2 as well as I aged.

Much darker. Love em both but I revisit T1 the most.

If I'm dining with someone for the first time, and depending on how I am feeling about their sense of humor, I will enact the dinner scene where Martin asks to go to the bathroom.

The shot then of Martin with tears running down his face is still one of the funniest things ever.

Only 8 spots left and at least 4 comedies that should be in the Top 100. I doubt they all make it.

Butler: You and your wife are expected for dinner.

Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr: My wife won't be coming.

Butler: Oh, I trust she is not ill?

Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr: She's not ill, she's a cheap, vulgar slut.

Butler: Ja, I have heard this.

:lmao:
Dr. Hfuhruhurr: [After Dolores finally consummates her marriage to Dr. Hfuhruhurr] "I never knew it could be like that! [sighs] So… so… professional!"

Fran:

Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr:
I can't inject you with window cleaner.

I don't mind. Hey, what does it do anyway?

It causes your brain to die last.

Someone mentioned earlier they never bought into the Molly Ringwald is sexy/hot hype. That's my opinion of Kathleen Turner.
I saw her on Broadway in The Graduate with Jason Biggs and it didn’t come close to changing my opinion.

Kathleen Turner in the early 80s was a totally different proposition to late 80s onwards. I think there was a medical reason involved

We'll have to agree to disagree. Romancing The Stone, Body Heat era Kathleen Turner still did nothing for me.

Agreed, I liked The Terminator much more than T2 as well. I like T2 but if it's on, I usually won't watch it but if The Terminator is on, I will watch it until the end. I was 16 when The Terminator came out, I drove my buddies to the theater to watch this and I think we went back to see it at least two more times, rented it a million times, etc. I saw T2 in the movie theater, I thought it was good but I could count on one hand how many times I've watched it since. To me, T2 is good where T1 is great.

Another Martin movie that seems to be fogotten but I liked quite a bit was All of Me with Lilly Tomlin.
