The 1972 Song Draft ... (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, if I come up, just skip me please. I'll make our last few picks later unless cos comes along and does it. gllllll

9.18--Johnny Rivers- "Rockin' Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu"

and

10.01--The Carpenters-- "It's Going To Take Some Time"

Johnny Rivers has a bunch of killer piano riffs in Boogie Woogie Flu, and all the Karen Carpenter jokes aside, for a two person group, the Carpenters were doing some amazing things with overdubbing and harmonies back then. Plus you don't get too many chicks behind the drum kit.

Besides, I have no rock cred left, so I might as well take songs that meant something to me back then. :P :bag:

"Rockin' Pneumonia" has been covered several times, no?

The Carpenters were great, and Karen Carpenter has the purest female singing voice I have ever heard. She was a songbird.

I'll take the heat for this one and will probably cost me votes, but so be it. Besides, it's probably the last "live" pick I'll make in the draft.

This album was huge during the summers in which I went away to sleepaway camp. An album way ahead of its time, driven by the one and only Marlo Thomas.

The New Seekers - "Free To Be...You And Me"

I'm surprised you didn't take the New Seekers even bigger 1972 hit. It's the real thing... :P

I guess it's iffy that we get that far this weekend, but can anyone take my last two picks?
i can, but don't give up hope of the draft picking up pace again.

Can i go?  I have to leave work and I'll be offline for 45 minutes.
Technically, TU's up. Just PM your pick to someone.
TU is offline. should we wait 20 minutes for someone that is offline?
Sure ... why not? That's the point of the time limit, to me -- so that one need not be in the thread, or even in the FFA constantly. Checking back in twice an hour or so should be sufficient.

I had wanted the Spinners other hit (I'll Be Around), but I'll settle for this one.

The Spinners - Could It Be I'm Falling In Love

My favorite part might be the way he sings "with you" a few times after singing the title. Pretty cool song.

Is this from the album by Marlo Thomas and Friends?

Moving right along...

Nige selects:

Pure Prairie League - "Amie"

Next 3:

Junior

TU

Zam
Not to be a #####, but can I get a link? Billboard has this charting on 4/12/1975.

Maybe it was on an earlier album or somthin'

10.11 - The Band, "The Weight" (live)
This was the live album that I happened upon. Thought about taking this very song. Not sure why I didn't.
Zilla wrote an interesting opinion about live tracks -- he seems to feel as if they're "dirty pool". And I can unserstand why he'd feel this way. However, there are many live versions of songs that are either the definitive versions themselves, or are legit rival versions to the studio cuts. AOR stations used to play loads of live cuts. The only version of "Conquistador" you're likely to hear on classic rock radio these days is the live cut. Same with "I Want You to Want Me" by Cheap Trick and "Baby I Love Your Way" by Frampton (to name two).

The live version of "The Weight" gets airplay still, though not as much as the studio version.

RCA re-released the single "Amie" 2 years after the album came out. The song made the album popular the second time around. The album originally came out in 72.

All true. This is a strange case in which both the album and the single "Amie" took over two years to ever appear on their respective charts. This happened in the 80s to the band Sherrif, and I think also to No Doubt (didn't Tragic Kingdom come out way before they started getting airplay?)
