The 1972 Song Draft ... (1 Viewer)

I'm all screwed up. I can't seem to figure out who's finished drafting and who hasn't. 'boni, you said "The Candy Man" was your last pick, but I still have you one song short. What did I miss? Also, did "Croc Rock" count?

Yes - "And You And I" in the 11th. Simey posted it for me last night.

Thanks. Did too much of this: :banned: last night.

Well, I guess I'll do it now. From the album that got me hooked on the Dead, I'm going to take ...

The Grateful Dead - "One More Saturday Night"

On any other day, I might have taken something different.

In hindsight, I think I might have done too much imbibing myself on a few of these picks.

And I left my list at work, but this one happened to strike me ...

The Moody Blues - "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)"

11- Waylon Jennings (w/ Willie Nelson) - "Good Hearted Woman"
Simey, I saw that you chose Good Hearted Woman by Waylon and Willie. This version didn't come out until 1976 with the release of Wanted: The Outlaws. The version that came out in '72 was just Waylon, no Willie. You just need to clarify which version you want.I might be able to find a link to this, but I know this from the liner notes of the Wanted: The Outlaws. (also, the version w/ Waylon and Willie, is actually not live)
No, Willie and Waylon did their first collaboration in 1972 on Waylons "Good Heart Woman" Album. waylon and willie Good Hearted Woman Waylon and Willie

Crap.

Just realized about 30 minutes ago, that I totally forgot about one of my favorite albums, that sure enough it turns out, was released in '72.

REALLY hate to leave off the jazz number I had lined up, since it is off of one of my 5 favorite jazz albums from any year.

Okay, maybe I'll just make a second list of all jazz

(not like it'll get any votes).

12.12 Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks - "Walking One & Only"

They wrote the song together, Waylon recorded the song by himself for that album

For my last pick, I'm going to nab another obscuro, but one that if you haven't heard, I'd implore you check out---

12.09 Lee Hazlewood---I Move Around

If you're a fan of country/lounge/kitschy/baroque pop, then check out Lee Hazlewood. Here's a little snippet I found:

Hailing from the same white-trash Texas podunk town that puked up Janis Joplin, Lee Hazlewood, in his near 40-year career, has fooled around with just about every genre you can imagine. And he's made a significant contribution to rock history each time out. For starters, he wrote the theme from the original "Batman" show, a song covered on record by everybody from the Ventures to the Jam. He also wrote the Astronauts' surf classic, "Baja." He practically made instrumental guitar hero Duane Eddy's career, and helped write his big monster-twang hits, "Movin' and Groovin'" and "Rebel Rouser."

It's only in recent years that young 'uns have become hip to this eccentric good old boy's formidable legacy as writer, producer and loony hybrid-country solo artist. I mean, do people realize just how important a role this warped old #### had in engineering the very foundations of rock and roll itself? In the last few decades, Hazlewood's worked with everybody from Dean Wareham to Gram Parsons, along with inspired oddball lyricists like Beck. He even wrote and produced the majority of Nancy Sinatra's recorded output in the mid-60's.

There's a great 2-CD compliation of his work called These Boots Are Made For Walkin' that collects a lot of his best work---highly recommended.

You don't have to change the pick, it's just that this version of the song is not Waylon and Willie, it's just Waylon, It's still a great pick, and a great song.

I'll change my 11th Good Hearted Woman pick to....

11- David Bowie - "The Jean Genie"

"the jean genie" was released as a single in 1972, before "aladdin sane" was released in 1973. "the jean genie:" reached #71 on the billboard charts in 72.

1.10 The Dreaded Marco - Lou Reed - "Walk on the Wild Side"

3.10 The Dreaded Marco - Rolling Stones - "Rocks Off"

4.09 The Dreaded Marco - Curtis Mayfield - "Pusherman"

5.10 The Dreaded Marco - The Kinks - "Celluloid Heroes"

6.09 The Dreaded Marco - Stevie Wonder - "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life"

11.10 The Dreaded Marco - Townes Van Zandt - "To Live Is To Fly"

12.09 The Dreaded Marco - Lee Hazlewood - "I Move Around"

Yeah, '72 definitely has slimmer pickin's amongst the standard classic rock genre, but it's still chalk full of lesser known nuggets. I certainly don't expect to get any votes with this list (other than my own of course :D ) with 2 or 3 artists most people have never even heard of---but I think this is a pretty diverse list of some great music.

Thanks for runnin' the show Nigel.

12.12 Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks - "Walking One & Only"
THanks GOd you didn't leave him out. Fantastic album.

Here's my list:

1 - Neil Young - "Heart of Gold"

2 - Mott the Hoople - "All the Young Dudes

3 - Chi-lites - "Oh, Girl"

4 - Curtis Mayfield - "Freddie's Dead"

5 - The O’Jays - "Back Stabbers"

6 - Luther Ingram - "If Loving You is Wrong, I Don’t Want to Be Right"

7 - Gilbert O'Sullivan - "Alone Again (Naturally)"

8 - Michael Jackson - "Ben"

9 - Johnny Rivers - "Rockin' Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu"

10 - The Carpenters - "It's Going To Take Some Time"

11 - Carole King -"Sweet Seasons"

12 - Helen Reddy -"I Am Woman"

My list is much more oriented to the pop music of 1972, rather than what passed for arena rock back then. I also mostly drafted songs that I liked, rather than what has become the canon of early '70s "rock". Drafting in 18th place meant that a lot of the big songs of the year were already taken, and has been said before some of the really big acts took the year off. There's a whole lot of really great music from 1971 and 1973, but still I think '72 holds up well.

'72 was when I was a junior/senior in college and because FM radio was still young and hadn't hardened into the strict playlists of the past 15 years, almost all the songs listed got airplay on the same stations. There was no MTV or VH1, and it was just a different time.

Of my picks, I'd have to say the O'Jays, Chi-lites and Gilbert O'Sullivan songs are my favorites.

hey maybe you guys can help me out I have a song stuck in my head and I don't know who sings it. I heard it on the radio the other day.

The ending of the song goes something like.

I or Deny?? what your looking for (repeats like 3 or 4 times)

then the last line of the song is Oh Lord I feel like I'm dying

then some guitar/sound effects follow.

Anyone know it?

12 zamboni - Sammy Davis, Jr. - "The Candy Man"

Probably the least favorite of my three drafts, but I think '72 was indeed a bit lighter than '69 or '79.

As with the previous drafts, I tried to pattern my selections in lockstep with my view of that year. IMO, 1969 was classic rock at its finest, 1979 incorporated a great amalgamation of many genres, and 1972 included decent (if not spectacular) classic rock, terrific singer/songwriter performances, and a number of campy yet innocuous tunes.

Thanks, Nige, for doing the dirty work (Steely Dan knew what they were talking about in '72).

And feel better, Simey.
