:goodposting: I remember than 1989 Karlis game, that was my first year playing fantasy football. Our corrupt commissioner put Karlis on my opponent's team to give my team a loss (something my opponent admitted years later). New Orleans Saints PK Hartley suspended

By Aaron Reynolds, Monday, August 17, 2009

ESPN.com has reported that New Orleans Saints PK Garret Hartley is going to miss the first four games of the regular season for testing positive to Adderall, a banned stimulant. The web site also reported Hartley received the Adderall from a friend and used it to help him stay awake while driving from Dallas to New Orleans for an offseason workout. The Saints signed PK John Carney to replace Hartley. Hartley made his debut during Week 10 of the 2008 season. He made 13/13 FG attempts and 28/28 XP attempts in 8 games and finished with 67 total points.

Analysis: Although Hartley is extremely accurate, he possesses minimal fantasy value. When Hartley's suspension is lifted, only rely on him if he is at home and is playing a soft defense.

There is none. The writer of that statement is an idiot.

CINCINNATI

After all the Twittering and laughing and guffawing, it took starting quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan to sum up what wide receiver Chad Ochocinco had done kicking the extra point to give the Bengals a 7-6 victory over the Patriots Thursday night here at Gillette Stadium in their second preseason game. "All joking aside," said O'Sullivan after he threw another touchdown to Chris Henry. "He kicked the ball through the uprights in an NFL preseason game and it won the game. Whatever you say, those things are going to happen in this in this league and it's nice to have that insurance." What happened is that Shayne Graham couldn't kick with a tender groin, but they didn't really know it until they decided not to try a 44-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Ochocinco, the Bengals' multimedia magnate, gave them another story. He kept reminding head coach Marvin Lewis and special teams coach Darrin Simmons that he can kick even though he hadn't kicked a football since October. "Remember when I used to juggle the soccer ball when I warmed up before a game?" The Ocho asked. "Coach Lewis took my ball away. Last year and the year before that. I think he got tired of it."

But they let him kick the point after O'Sullivan threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Henry on fourth-and-17 with 1:56 left in the half and they let him kick off to open the second half. But they wouldn't let him try a chip-shot field goal late in the third quarter and the ball just inside the Pats 6. "Coach Lewis said we were on the (right) hash. It doesn't matter where we're at Coach Lew," The Ocho said, who claims he was his high school's kicker all those years ago. "You have to believe in me." Bengaldom believes after The Ocho gave a 69-yard clinic to another secondary Thursday on catches of 13, 21, and 35 yards. The kicking, of course, was extra. With Graham shelved, Lewis and Simmons had discussed using rookie punter Kevin Huber. "Marvin said let's give Chad the shot and I said, 'Go for it,'" Simmons said. "He'd done it before for us and he'd actually done pretty well. He's a soccer player. And he was really into it."

When Graham went through a similar injury last year back in October, The Ocho kicked one entire practice before the Bengals signed Dave Rayner for two games. "Now they don't have to sign anyone," he said. "Hey, we don't need Shayne any more." All with a smile of course. He went from being The Old Ocho who can have fun and catch without brooding about money to The New Ocho, who can catch and KICK without brooding about money. After the kick went through the uprights, he joked with someone on the sidelines, "I'm going back to the negotiating table."

"We went through a lot of things," Simmons said. "We've worked together in practice before. I told him to make sure you line it up correctly, walk it off correctly. Give Kevin (holder Huber) the nod to tell him you're ready. Just watch Kevin's fingers. When his fingers move, you go." The talk about the kickoff was a little more basic. Lewis told Simmons to take him out of halftime early and work with him before everybody else went out on the field. "He hit a couple of good ones and I told him after he hit, just get out of the way," Simmons said. The kickoff went to the Pats 9, which turned out to be his last kick. Lewis said he didn't have more concerns about Ocho pulling any of his own muscles. "He'd pull a muscle playing receiver before he'd pull one kicking," Lewis said.

The Ocho is a big-time soccer fan and follower of English football. He has traveled to Europe to watch his friend, the great Frenchman Thierry Henry, and has had his jersey hanging in his locker. He used some soccer knowledge at halftime. "'Esteban' Ochocinco is back," he said. "The most interesting footballer in the world. Everyone has to remember, I've always said that soccer is my No. 1 sport. I think Ronaldinho would be proud of me right now."

Is there a correlation between scoring indoors vs. outdoors? It seems like kicking indoors would be preferable. Detroit plays all but 5 games inside this year. NO plays all but 6 indoors.

It is not just you.
Wasn't Tynes all year in 2008 trying to beat out Carney... but he never was able to do it? (except I think 2 weeks Carney was hurt). Carney meanwhile was money--lots of opportunities and super accurate--a steal last year off the WW wire... 8 attempts from more than 40 in 14 games... If Tynes can get as many chances as Carney (and hit them) he'll be a steal too... owned in 8% of Yahoo leagues.. Related... Carney was signed by NO and will start at least the first 4 because the Saints K was suspended for performance enhancing substance or something... If Carney kicks like last year NO's old K (forget his name) might not get his job back...

The name is Garrett Hartley, who was perfect in the last eight games of 2008 after two kickers were 9-14 on FG and missed an XP.Hartley was 13-13 on FG, 4-4 from 40-49, no attempts from 50+. Including 28-28 XPs, Hartley scored 67 points -- pretty good ppg of 8.4, bump to near 10 ppg for leagues with distance bonuses. In addition to the accuracy Hartley showed last year, two reasons Carney might not be retained after the suspension are Hartley's superior kickoff length (compared to Carney, at least) and I would assume he's much cheaper given Carney's long league tenure.I'll be following this closely along with the situation in Baltimore.

 Excellent points about Carney's kickoff length (and $$$).. NYG kept Tynes around because Carney's Kickoff length was subpar and they wanted the field position advantage--every week it was a decision btwn Tynes for ko's and Carney for the FG accurracy.. Carney always won out... Have to keep my eyes on Hartley when he comes back--he was undrafted in my league and could be a nice K w/all the scoring that goes on in NO if the Carney owners is sleeping on grabbing him after the suspension...

Steven Hauschka was named the Ravens kicker Saturday.Hauschka wasn't really pushed by Graham Gano during their camp competition. Hauschka has a strong leg but his accuracy is the question mark. We'll leave him on the free agent wire for now, but keep an eye on him. Source: Aaron Wilson on Twitter
Shaun Suisham has won the Redskins' kicking job, according to Brad Biggs of the National Football Post.Suisham was in a very tight battle with Dave Rayner. It's a little surprising Suisham won because of his 72.2 percent accuracy last season and he'll probably be on a short leash. You can do better at your kicker spot. Source: National Football Post

Bucs released K Matt Bryant.Mike Nugent will be the Bucs kicker. The cut of Bryant is controversial because he made three field goals one day after the funeral for his three-month-old son last season. Bryant had been struggling with a hamstring injury and recently ripped coach Raheem Morris and Nugent in a radio interview.

Need a waiver Kicker and its one of these guys, Kasey, or Nedney.

Hartely is suspended for four games, think the guy was taking steroids.
He said he tested positive after taking something to keep him awake on a long drive. It wasn't steroids...just some over the counter stimulant that contained a banned substance.
So Carney for 4 games then back to Hartley or is he toast?

If Carney does well they'll just stick with him. Hartley struggled to make field goals during the preseason.
