Their top priority before free agency begins March 5 is to sign kicker Jeff Reed to a new contract. They intend to accomplish that before doing anything else, and that is fine by Reed, who has maintained all along his desire to remain with the Steelers. Reed said that he has met with "the most important people in the organization" -- president Art Rooney II, director of football operations Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin -- "and they all said they definitely want me back. They want me to retire a Steeler. Sounds like a good plan to me."

Kickology blog: Mind Over Foot, part 3

"Anecdotally, many athletes claim to perceive their sport-specific targets as bigger on days that they perform better. For example, baseball players in the midst of a hitting spree say the ball looks as big as a grapefruit. Golfers dropping birdie after birdie relate the size of the cup to a bucket. In contrast, on bad days, athletes claim that they are swinging at aspirins or putting to the inside of a doughnut. Recent empirical research suggests these experiences are not just hyperbole, but reflect a psychological reality....

Another interesting finding in the current experiment reveals that the manner in which participants missed kicks related to how they perceived the field goal posts. Participants who missed their kicks wide perceived the uprights as narrower. Similarly, participants who missed their kicks short, perceived the crossbar as higher off the ground. This result demonstrates a level of specificity, namely that perceptual effects occur according to where performance excels and where inadequacies exist."

The Cowboys need to address their kicking situation this off-season and they have added one already, Connor Hughes. Hughes actually worked out for the Cowboys in December when they signed Shaun Suisham. The thinking then was that they wanted a kicker with experience, so Suisham won the job when the Cowboys replaced Nick Folk. Hughes set Virginia records in points (332), field goals made (66), attempted (79), extra points made (134) and extra points attempted (138). His 83.5 percent accuracy rate on field goals was second in school history. He spent training camp with New Orleans in 2006 and was with Pittsburgh in 2007. He kicked in the Arena Football League for Philadelphia in 2008. Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis expressed confidence that David Buehler could develop into the field goal kicker in 2010. Buehler handled the kickoff job in 2009 but never really worked on field goals during the year and has a strong but sometimes wild leg. "It's going to be a competitive situation," DeCamillis said after Saturday's Pro Bowl practice. "We've got to see what happens there. We've got to come up with a plan and stick with the plan whatever the plan is. There will be some competition there for sure."

Barefoot kickers in a Super Bowl? Tony Franklin for Philadelphia in SB XV, and Rich Karlis for Denver in SB XXI and SB XXII.

Best punting average in a Super Bowl? Tom Rouen for Seattle in SB XL, 50.2 yard average on six punts.

Mike Mercer was the first player to ever score a field goal in a Super Bowl, for Kansas City in SB I http://bit.ly/96osgQ

It's interesting to see how little things can have a big effect down the line.

In terms of Morstead, none of this may have happened. He was taken in the 5th round by the Saints after the Bengals snagged hometown boy Kevin Huber (I noticed this mainly because I called my shot on the Bengals drafting Huber in that round and couldn't help but notice that the Saints went punter as well). Now of course it's totally possible that the Saints liked Morstead more anyhow, but Huber was generally considered the #1 punter prospect. If the Bengals let Huber slip past round 5 then everything would've changed (perhaps not in the end result of course).

Mike - which of these kickers do you think are a lock to have an NFL job next season?

Olindo Mare

Billy Cundiff

Matt Bryant

Shaun Suisham

Matt Stover

TIA

OSU homer here, but Aaron Pettrey has one HECK of a leg. I am definitely going to have to see where he ends up. Losing him for the last few games last season hurt our offense immensely. Great distance kicker. He routinely made 60+ yarders in pregame warmups (54 yard career long ingame)

Skills Competition

Michigan State's Brett Swenson won the kicker competition over USC's Jordan Congdon, Mississippi's Joshua Shene and Texas' Hunter Lawrence. Swenson started the competition poorly, missing his first three kicks, but recovered to hit his final 4, including the deep kick of 50-yards to win it.

Hey, who was the punter that OSU had a few years ago? Andy something? He was the best punter ever, I still can't figure out how he never ended up on a roster.
