Well if he wins the job he'll make $4.1M over 2 years, but yeah, he's got to win the job first. Personally I think it should be pretty easy to do, Houston has lost nearly all their faith in Kris Brown.

NY JETS

Near the end of last season, even Nick Folk could sense the end of his tenure as the Dallas Cowboys’ place-kicker. Folk’s accuracy plummeted after he made 90.9 percent of his field-goal attempts in 2008. He missed at least one field goal -– and two against the Giants -– in Weeks 10 through 15. The Cowboys released Folk before the season ended. “With the way I was kicking?” he said. “It was bound to happen at some point.” Now, Folk is the front-runner to replace Jay Feely, who signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency, as the Jets’ kicker next season. Folks hopes to return to his 2008 form.

His struggles actually started with hip surgery 12 weeks before training camp. In a normal season, Folk said he would begin practicing at the end of March, or the beginning of April, allowing for a five-month window to get ready for the season. Last season, because of the surgery, Folk kicked a volleyball 10 weeks before training camp, then a soccer ball, then a flat football. He did not practice with an actual football until camp was one week out. Folk believes he developed bad habits, mainly because of rust, and he said that also led to issues with his holder, because they had little time to develop chemistry. “I had a week to get ready for training,” he said during the Jets’ media availability Thursday. “With my competitive nature, I didn’t want to miss training camp.” Folk said his accuracy issues last season were more technical, more physical, than mental –- and therefore easier to correct. He said he fixed those problems already this off-season, working with his private coach.

Jets Coach Rex Ryan told Folk he would compete for the starting job. As Folk tries to resurrect his career here, he acknowledged there was pressure that came along with that. “It obviously didn’t end the way I wanted it to,” Folk said. “It didn’t start the way I wanted it to, either, with going through surgery and whatnot. So I have to go out and prove myself, which I don’t mind doing. I like it. I want to go out and have a good year.”

Hey there Mike, so what do you think will be the total number of kickers that get drafted?

Walter Football's mock had my Bengals taking one in Round 5 (which I guess is plausible) though I haven't seen the same buzz around the Bengals like I did with regard to Huber at punter in round 5 last year (yes shamelessly once again plugging my called shot on that pick).

They had the Bengals taking: Garrett Lindholm  out of Tarleton State

Here's his bio from their website: Linky

Kid did hit a 64-yarder  to tie a D-II playoff game at the end of regulation (they won in 2OT 57-56).

I already like him better than Shanks Graham.

On average, two are drafted each year. I'll guess that only one gets drafted this year. Of the teams looking for competition at kicker, there will be enough UDFAs to select from in the hours after the draft.

There's not really a clear cut favorite this year. Could be Alabama. Or Texas. Or Michigan State. Or Ohio State.

The San Francisco 49ers' Joe Nedney today scored a victory for humanity -- and the small subsection of humans who kick footballs professionally. The human being scored an easy victory over Ziggy the Killer Robot in a field goal-kicking battle this morning at Kezar Stadium -- and, unlike Ziggy, Nedney didn't misfire and nearly decapitate his handler.

Love this quote from Lindholm: "I would say it’s mostly the Offensive linemen who gripe the most about kickers because they are only jealous that they aren’t kickers." I really am starting to hope my Bengals take a shot on this kid in round 5.

If you look at the 64-yarder he made in that playoff game, he's basically kicking from dirt. Given that we play at Cleveland and Pittsburgh (probably the worst surface in the league) every year this would be handy IMO.

Keep 'em comin' Mike!

Hooray!! It looks like the Shanks Graham is over.

 I was kinda warming up to the idea of them drafting that Tarlenton State kid.

CINCINNATI

While he was growing up, Mike Nugent’s family had Cincinnati Bengals season tickets. “Back in the Ickey Woods days,” Nugent said. “My parents even went to the Super Bowl.” And now, on his fourth NFL contract, Nugent will get an opportunity to play for his favorite childhood team. The Bengals signed Nugent, the former Centerville and Ohio State standout kicker, on Friday, April 23, to compete for the kicking job that opened when Shayne Graham became an unrestricted free agent. Nugent and fifth-year Michigan State product Dave Rayner are the two kickers currently on the Bengals roster. “As far as what they told me,” Nugent said, “it’s just an opportunity to compete for a job.”

Nugent was drafted in the second round by the New York Jets in 2005 and spent 2005-08 with the team. Last season, he kicked for both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Arizona Cardinals before the Cardinals released him following Week 16. Nugent said he worked out for the Bengals in January and stayed in contact with the team since. “It was kind of a ‘We’ll let you know,’ ” said Nugent, 28, who lives in the Columbus area. “Then my agent called (Thursday) night and said, ‘It looks like the Cincinnati Bengals.’ ” Nugent drove to Cincinnati on Friday morning to undergo a physical and sign the contract that, to many, signals that the Bengals won’t return Graham to the roster. Nugent, a 2001 Centerville graduate, left Ohio State with 22 school records and the 2004 Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top college kicker. He has made 79-of-100 field goals as a professional. “My job was just to stay in great kicking shape in case I got a tryout,” Nugent said. “I was working as hard as I could hoping to get a chance.”

posted this in the UFA! thread but it should be here too as it may have an impact next season.

The Bengals signed UFA long snapper Mike Windt from the University of Cincinnati Linky. This is the guy who snapped for Kevin Huber for most of his college career, so it could be a little more than just giving a home-town kid a chance to show his stuff. I am a little bit surprised, as Rutgers product Clark Harris came in last year and did a fine job replace Bad Snap Lou...er Brad St. Louis after St. Louis struggled early in the season.

Aside from my natural Jersey bias toward Harris, I actually met his mother-in-law at the Bengals playoff game this year by total random chance.

Last year, two rookies place-kicked in the NFL (Succop & Gano). In 2008 there were five (Barth, Carpenter, Hartley, Hauschka & Mehlhaff).

Texas kicker Hunter Lawrence signed a 2-year FA deal with Tampa. No tryout needed.
