The 2010 K Thread (3 Viewers)

I am guessing you will be pleased some week with a couple of 50 yarders + and some weeks u will cuss him when he misses a couple of 30 yarders. Huge leg though. As a Dallas fan it is nice to have this weapon. Makes a huge difference in field position.

So here's the first in a series for those of us playing Russian roulette with our kickers this year. Who do you think is a good waiver wire pickup to start Week 1? Here's the viable kickers I found on my waiver wire:

Dan Carpenter (MIA @ BUF) - he's been a pretty solid kicker under the radar since last year, but the Dolphins offense does'nt give him a lot of upside. He might also have trouble if it's windy at Orchard Park on Sunday.

Jeff Reed (PIT vs. ATL) - With Dennis Dixon as the Steelers QB, I expect a lot of running the football and a start and stop offense, which suggests multiple FG attempts. Reed also seems to kick better at home, strangely enough.

Ryan Succop (KC vs. SD) - this kid seemed to kick a lot better after a rough first few weeks last season. But again, he's limited by his offense. If you're a believer in Matt Cassell, this might be a decent matchup to exploit.

That's what I've got - how about you?

I can't see Buehler being a good FG kicker. IIRC he kicked FG's in college, but he was drafted because of his booming leg which pins opposing teams back on kickoffs. He didn't even try any FG's last year. In an attempt to save money (and a roster spot) they are trying to have him pull double duty to handle FG's and kickoffs. It has already been stated that even if he struggles at FG's and they have to bring in a dedicated FG kicker Buehler will remain on the roster strictly for kickoffs. I envision the Cowboys bringing in a real FG kicker by week 6 or so. IMO his accuracy will not develop as they are hoping. With so many other proven serviceable kickers out there I can't see a single reason to jump on his bandwagon. Typical Jerry, spend over a billion on a new stadium but lose a couple of games because he's trying to save a couple million on a kicker.

I grabbed Folk when he was 1st named the kicker in Dallas - did a great job for a year or 2 until he lost his mojo - I suspect Buehler will have a real good season - wont be from lack of chances! Would rather take him late then one of the usual suspects in the middle of the pack

How's this for football nerdiness: I drafted him mainly because of name recognition from my Madden team. Did a draft on my Xbox and screened for kickers with the strongest leg (because I want touchbacks) and he was at the top of the list.

Never heard of him before.

Picked him up as an early FA in a dynasty league to replace Scobee as my backup. I like what I've seen so far and he might even end up supplanting my starter, Gostkowski, at least on some weeks.
did you trade for Scobee?
I drafted Scobee, just like I drafted Gostkowski. We have 14 teams, 40-man rosters and 8 rookie draft rounds. Even with IDP's, picking up a PK in a good situation makes sense in the later rounds. Scobee's fine as a PK, but the offense he plays for simply sucks.

Neil Rackers was sitting on my leagues waiver wire the day that he was officially declared the starter, so I grabbed him and dropped Nick Folk.

Rackers is solid and can kick the long field goals (which helps when you get bonuses). Looks good to me.

A lot of Buehler discussion of late...I wanted Janikowski but he was drafted before the last round so I figured I would take Mr. Big Leg.

Mike, what are your thoughts on Buehler? He's gonna get a lot of opportunities if the Cowboys continue to move the ball really well and then falter every time they hit the redzone...

So far, six different NFL kickers have hit field goals of 50+ yards today. I sense a post coming tomorrow to your nearest Kickology blog.

Good call.

Any Kickers at risk of losiong their job any time soon? Buehler? Which unemployed kickers would get the first look?

TheHuddle) Dallas Cowboys PK David Buehler's job is not yet in jeopardy after he has missed field goal attempts in the first two weeks, according to Todd Archer, of The Dallas Morning News. "My intuition is to be real patient there," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said of Buehler.
