The 2010 K Thread (1 Viewer)

RT @1053thefan: Jerry Jones said that this week is NOT judgment week for kicker David Buehler. "I think we have a fundamentally sound kicker."

RT @mikereiss: Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski is 1 for 4 on FG attempts. Bill Belichick addresses the struggles. http://tinyurl.com/22wpp9v

What are the thoughts on akers? Dude has been my kicker for like 10 years and I am ready to cut loose. I'm just am not sold on Vick or Kolb moving the ball versus good teams. Nugent is available.

This is a harder call than it should be. I feel like I'll need to write the guy a letter or something.

Interesting the rest of the FBG staff have Longwell at #1 this week while you have him down at 14....I picked him up for this week only but now thinking I might pick up Cundiff instead....

I am playing a team with 4 position players from the Jets and thier D/St. I have a choice between Nick Folk, Jests kicker, and another kicker who is projected to score a bit more. I decided to start Folk figuring if the Jets havbe a good week I will counter act that a bit.

Any thoughts in general on the subject?

Always start the player that you think will score the most points.
Not true at all, there are lots of variables to consider.
as long as it's close, I agree. If it's a matter of Peyton Manning vs. Charlie Batch, you go with Peyton. With kickers, I'd almost certainly start Folk in the OP's situation. It's a kicker which are difficult to predict and none are really "safe plays".

All else equal, you want to reduce variation (start same K, QB for RB) when you have the better team and increase variation when you have the lesser team.

The New Orleans Saints could cut kicker Garrett Hartley following his chip-shot miss in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the Atlanta Falcons. ESPN is reporting the Saints have contacted former NFL veteran kicker John Carney and he will workout for the team this week.

Could the Raiders follow the wisdom of the Saints and cut Seabass? Probably not. But it'd be nice to see some accountability like when they fired Figurs for his week #1 performance.

After 3 missed FG's already this year, and a missed game-winner on Sunday, the Saints are supposed to trying out kickers this week. I figured it was worth keeping up with. Has anyone heard anything yet?

(Rotoworld) According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Saints coach Sean Payton has not yet fully given up on K Garrett Hartley. Analysis: Payton is "fully aware" of Hartley's disappointing start, but last season's Super Bowl winning coach is a big fan of the former Oklahoma Sooner. Entering 2010, Hartley had made 91.7 percent of his career field goals. The Saints could sign free agent John Carney on Tuesday, and let him battle Hartley on the practice field this week for the right to start versus Carolina.

TheHuddle) New Orleans Saints PK Garrett Hartley missed a 29-yard FG that would have beaten the Falcons in overtime. The Saints brought in John Carney and Matt Stover to audition on Monday, reports Adam Schefter, of ESPN.com. Analysis: He pulled it badly, giving him three misses in seven tries this year. The Saints will probably go with Carney unless Hartley lucks out and gets one more chance. Carney was 13-of-17 for the Saints in 2009 and 23-of-25 for them back in 2006. Hartley's sudden funk is the reason why you wait until the end of your draft to select a kicker.

I feel like I've seen this movie before - we have the same issues with Nate Kaeding. How do you cut/replace a guy who makes 9/10, but the one he always seems to miss are the pressure kicks late in games?

It sucks. The only thing you can do is keep running him out there and hope that he makes a couple big ones to restore confidence. I don't see the Saints cutting Hartley.

As a Saints fan, that miss a couple days ago was tough to watch. He obviously had those misses in week 1 as well.

And all that said, there's no one else I'd rather have at K right now for the Saints. The guy made some monstrous post-season FG's last year, has an incredibly high % of FG's made, and is young with a BIG leg. Stay with him, show him you have confidence and let him work his way out of the funk.

 Hartley's my guy in contract league, and I have him signed through next season. Would hate to burn cap space to replace him. Just hope NO makes a decision before the Thursday transaction deadline.

This guy isn't just missing field goals, he's hitting the ball all wrong. His mechanics are off. Cut him.
Agree, something is in his head at this point. Even on extra points the ball is coming out low, knuckling and just not pure looking.

I heard Kris Brown and John Carney on the radio today. Also, speculation is that the Saints may keep two kickers on the roster like they did for much of last year.

T&P, hope it works out.
Thanks, man. I've backed off the ledge ...Seriously, the facts I know ...- Payton says no decision has been made and "we'll see"- Mike Herman, who I trust immensely regarding kickers, tweeted that he thinks "we'll see" is coach speak for "no, Hartley's safe"- Word from NOLA is that Carney and Brown are being flown in for tryouts today. Unclear if that means they'll be at practice, of if private meeting/try out.- Also word (source unknown to me) that Saints are open to keeping two kickers on the roster, like they did last year.My two cents:- This is a ploy to motivate ... er, Garret Hartley. The kid took all the blame for the kick on Sunday. He's hit 91% of his FGs. He hit the game winner in the Super Bowl. He's got a strong leg (three over 40 in the SB). I think the team is willing to give him another shot, but they want him to know it's serious business and he's gone if there's one more screw up. Maybe he's let the SB win get to his head. Maybe this straightens him out. Saints hope he performs better under pressure.- Carney was a kicking consultant last year. Has a good relationship with Hartley. Wonder if he's in town to play a similar role. Hartley looks like a golfer with a case of the shanks. Maybe Carney can be the "swing coach" that fixes it. Hartley's got a lot of potential.- Hard for me to believe that a team that doesn't like missed FGs wants Kris Brown. How many game winners did he miss in Houston? I can't recall specifics, but it feels like he choked away a bunch of big games. He'd have some monster 5 FG games, but was useless in the clutch. He doesn't solve the problem.Where do we end up? My bet is that Carney is on the roster. His job is to help Hartley out of the funk. If the pressure tactic fails and Hartley misses a kick in-game, Carney will be in for the next kick, and then the job is probably his. If Hartley rights the ship, Carney eventually moves back to being a consultant and off the roster. I don't think Kris Brown or another kicker ends up on the roster unless the Saints think Carney couldn't do the job in a game (not the strongest leg at this stage of his career).

agreed. Hartley was like 91.7% before the start of the season. he's in a slump for sure, but he's got real talent, and is a high character guy. and he's better than anyone they could get in free agency. it would be a mistake to give up on him so soon.

per Rotoworld:

FoxSports.com's Adam Caplan reports the Saints have re-signed K John Carney.

Carney had been working in a consulting role with the Saints since losing his job to Garrett Hartley last year. The 46-year-old is a more reliable option at the moment while Hartley works though his case of the yips. Carney is worthy of a waiver addition in the Saints' high-powered offense. Not a surprising move. Now the more important question: how will the two be used going forward? Both were on the roster for larger parts of the 2009 season. IIRC, Carney kicked for the first 11 games and Hartley had the last 5 and the playoffs.Hopefully they'll announce who is the "starter" for week 4.

From caplannfl on Twitter:

"My understanding on the Carney situation is it will be much like last year. He'll work with/mentor Hartley."

Temporarily good news for Hartley owners in leagues where it's not easy (or costly) to release your kicker. For those in more typical leagues, I think you cut Hartley because the risk of him getting pulled is too high and you can always find a kicker on the wire. For those in leagues where many/most kickers are rostered, Carney could be a sleeper if he eventually gets the job.

x2It actually looked to me like the game winner against SF in week 2 was coming out wrong and that the SF player who almost blocked it actually ended up redirecting that kick through (albeit unintentionally). If SF hadn't tipped that kick we might have been having these conversations a week earlier IMO.

RT @suzhalliburton: Former texas kicker hunter lawrence worked out for vikings tuesday. He'd been cut in preseason by tampa bay.

Interesting that Carney has been kept around (before this happened) during the offseason and in season.

Parcells was very very hard on his kickers and Payton saw that. There have been countless kickers over the years that have said Parcells' camp was harder than in-season as he readied them for pressure kicking situations by "putting them on the spot" often and barking at them to make em' nervous as well. I've always found it interesting how different coaches pressure kickers in a practice atmosphere. (also superstitions sometimes come into play with kickers which can be a fun read)

It seems Payton has been trying the nice guy approach with Hartley.

I wish I knew more about the Saints camp and Hartley. What Payton did, what he wished he did differently. What Hartley could have done better etc.

This is a proven young kicker that got it done in the Supe too. This is not some journeyman K like we often see.

I've got news for you - that's Parcells' m.o. as to everybody.

Saints coach Sean Payton press conference:

What went into the decision to bring Carney back?

"Obviously he's been here before; he's a seasoned veteran and we'll see how those guys battle during the week and make a decision at the week's end as to who's going to kick for us. We did this a year ago and each week we'll evaluate the practice and evaluate how those guys do and go from there."

Is there a scenario where you'd have both kickers active for the game?

"We'll see. There's none specifically, but we'll see."

What did you see from Carney in the workout?

"He was real consistent. He was 100% with the kicks. Both guys did a good job yesterday; both he and Kris (Brown) kicked well. His get-offs were good and he didn't miss a kick. It was impressive."

Does the relationship that Garrett Hartley and Carney have a bearing in why you went with Carney?

"There's that familiarity with the player in John's case with us. You still try to really evaluate the workout and look closely at how those guys are kicking. Not going in with any type of bias, you want to evaluate the workouts – that's why two guys are in there. But John did a good job. Like I said, he didn't miss. That was something that you still need to see, even from someone that you're familiar with."

Do you think having Carney here keeps Hartley's confidence better than if you had gone with Brown?

"The one thing about John is his experience with the process. He helps all of us when it comes to the snap, hold, kick; that's a strength of his. When you have kicked as long as he has – he's my age – that's pretty important and it's helpful."

Has John been kicking?

"I think he's been working out. I said this to him a year ago and I said to him yesterday, ‘For every player, you play until 32 teams tell you that you can't,' and then you eventually get on with your next job or whatever you're going to do next. His preparation and his mindset has been to be prepared for an opportunity. You could see that obviously he had been kicking."
