The 49ers - The implosion continues tonight (1 Viewer)

Update: Despite the fact that Smith looked pretty awful, the Niners beat a terrible Raiders team, which will prolong the agony for Alex Smith, Mike Singletary, and Niner fans. Smith will start against Carolina and almost certainly play the whole game, and the Panthers look bad so there's even a chance they could win that game. But then they have to head to London for a supposed home game against Denver, and that has all the makings of an ugly outing for a poorly-coached team with no leadership. At least Smith won't be booed there.

My prediction: If they lose to Carolina, Smith will get pulled during the Denver game, which they'll lose, and we'll see a change at QB after the bye week. If they beat Carolina, Smith will get the entire Denver game, which they'll lose, and the Niners will still be stuck with him after the bye.

I really hope Alex Smith suddenly becomes good. Barring that miracle, I hope they continue losing and plug in Troy Smith/Nate Davis. If those two suck (which is probable, but not certain), they are able to land a top qb next year and hope he picks things up as quickly as Bradford.

Is it me or does Smith look extremely slow for a so-called mobile quarterback? I remember when he and rodgers were in the draft that Smith was supposed to be the one quicker on his feet, but watching both you'd never think that.

I didn't see this week's debacle, but it should be enough to quiet the folks who were asking for David Carr. We'll see what happens with the Smith injury, but it's reasonable to expect that we'll see Carr starting in London. At least there they won't have to hear the crowd's boos and calls for yet another crappy backup QB. The injury might actually be a boon for Smith; he could wind up starting after the bye week.

The season is over, so the only question left is what will happen with the QB situation and the coaching staff. At QB, we'll probably get enough of a look at the backups to make everyone realize the solution isn't on the roster. At coach, the only question is whether Singletary gets fired at the midway point, or whether the team gets to make a heroic run to 6-10 to save his job.

Most likely, Singletary's gone, and the Niners are again hoping for a QB savior with the 1.01 pick.

Just curious... Do you think Singletary should be fired, CalBear? And if so, why and when?
He should never have been hired. He should be fired as soon as possible to give the Niners a chance to begin moving on.Why? He's incapable of accepting responsibility (just like the rest of the Niner managment), his game plans seem clueless, and his teams seem totally lost. They're 1-6 after losing to an 0-5 team. Why should he not be fired?

The same reason why people on this board think Smith should remain the QB:

There is no one to replace him.

You may be right that he should be fired.I do think he is in over his head. He was a great player, but he has very little coaching experience. And he has made a lot of mistakes... The worst one being the hiring of Jimmy Raye as OC, imo.

Part of me still likes the guy, though... So I find myself hesitant to call for his firing...

I wasn't trying to start an argument with you. I was just curious where you stood on that.

Is Alex Smith done? I'm wondering if Crabtree is worthless again.
If Carr starts all receivers are worthless going forward. Gore could catch dumpoffs.I wonder if any coach gets fired mid-season since the owners appear to be prepping for a lockout. Why pay out additional $? That is definately the Panthers position.

I also think the Yorks are unlikely to fire Singletary in mid-season... because that would be tantamount to admitting they made a mistake... something I think they are loathe to do.

So unless public opinion among Niner fans turns strongly against Singletary, my guess is that he will at least finish out the season. And he may even be given one more year to prove he can get the job done.

Which means another 3 to 4 years of QB development. The perfect coaching scenario would be either Gruden as head coach and wade phillips as def coord or biill cowher as head coach and norv turner as off coord.

Depressing......

They might sign a vet during the offseason, as well. We were linked to almost vet on the market last year, but didn't sign because we did not want to risk Alex Smith's fragile confidence and endanger his breakout season. Once Smith is finally gone ...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Following the 49ers' sixth loss in seven games to open the season, John and Jed York privately expressed displeasure about the team's coaching to their "inner circle," a team source told Comcast SportsNet on Sunday.

"There were some grumbles from the owners about bad coaching," the source said.

Coach Mike Singletary was signed to a four-year contract after guiding the 49ers to a 5-4 finish in 2008 as the interim coach. But the 49ers went 8-8 last year, and are off to a 1-6 start this season.

Team president Jed York, the son of owner John York, declared the 49ers would still win the NFC West even after the club lost its first five games of the season.

York told CSN Bay Area on Oct. 11 that he had not addressed Singletary's job security inside the organization. When asked if he is committed to Singletary as coach for the remainder of the season, York answered, "Mike's our coach."

Following York's guarantee, the 49ers broke through with a 17-9 victory over the Raiders.

But the 49ers, a consensus preseason pick to win the NFC West this season, fell to 1-6 on Sunday with a 23-20 loss to the previously winless Carolina Panthers. The Seattle Seahawks lead the division with a 4-2 record.

The Yorks spoke to those close to them as the team departed Charlotte en route to London, where the 49ers are schedule to play the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium next week.

The 49ers struggled in every phase of the game Sunday, and again had a number of crucial breakdowns. The Panthers, who entered with the NFL's last-ranked offense, out-gained the 49ers 379 yards to 282.

When asked after the game if the 49ers are simply not a very good team, Singletary answered, "There's no doubt in my mind, somehow, someway, we will regroup and we will keep fighting and we will make a season of it. And I still believe we can go to the playoffs. I still believe we can get those things done. We just have to get the right things in place and go from there."
"The Rat" is nibbling..

Q: What would you expect an owner who is incapable of assessing his own failures to say about the 1-6 coach he hired?

A: "Mike is our head coach," York told the newspaper while in London for Sunday's International Series game against the Denver Broncos.

York disputed reports that 49ers executives were sour on Singletary following the team's 23-20 road loss to the Carolina Panthers last Sunday.

"We were grumbling because we lost the game," York said. "I think we grumble any time we lose a game."

I don't know when the best time is to fire a coach but I know possibly the worst time is while your team is in the middle of a two-week road trip and en route to a game in London.

Go SF Giants.

the loss of Gore can be added to Singletary's exit ticket. Gore is 2nd in the league in total number of plays with his injury history, and we just now see Westy was pretty capable of spelling him more. some supreme personnel management that may have cost us the season.
