The American Eagle Sydney Sweeney ad (3 Viewers)

Ghost Rider

Have some people lost their minds? Seriously?

I get that some are simply jealous of a woman many find very attractive, but the dialogue some are using on this is just insanity. And it's not just some loons on Twitter/X saying it. Actual national news channels are covering it.

Yes. Seriously.

News outlets reporting things like "people on social media are saying..." are ones that I'm probably not all that interested in hearing from. First, I'm guessing like half of these "people" online are bots generating comments. Second, people complaining on social media shouldn't be seen as newsworthy. If someone wants to do an actual scientific poll about how people feel about this ad campaign, then maybe I'll have some interest in discussing whether or not it is racist. As it stands now, I find it hard to believe this is a significantly widespread complaint. I think I'd have a hard time finding anyone IRL that cares about this at all.

1000% this.

People on social media are finally getting fed up with ducks. It is an increasing problem in society today that people really don't like ducks. What did ducks ever do to people and how do we live with this people on duck hate.

Article next week:
People on social media love ducks and can't understand why other people hate ducks.

It blows me away with the amount of our population that actively walks around looking to be offended everyday.

on race: "oh so we have a blonde haired blue eyed girl telling us what the perfect jeans (genes) are.....how racist!!" Ummm....SS is a natural brunette
on Schmatzies: "This is a dog whistle for the extermination of all races NOT Caucasian, blond haired and blue eyed. Just like the Schmatzies wanted!!!" Ummmm....the Chairman and CEO of American Eagle Outfittes is Jewish and is a significant benefactor to Jewish causes and organizations both in the United States and Israel.

That is not true at all.

Some author tries to make it seem like people are offended, often just grabbing a single tweet post and blowing it out of proportion. They want to make it seem like people are outraged then it turns into a clickbait article from all the people wondering, "how is someone outraged at that?".

lol

have you been on TikTok in the last 24 hours? it is literally every 3rd post on my FYP

I think you are probably right, but when I see clips like a university professor talking about how this ad had nazi tendencies (and she was being serious), it becomes clear that it's not just twitter trolls and bots making this argument,

I have never been on tik-tok, however a local weather man recently had to debunk a tik-tok theory that Houston was in direct line of a hurricane 2 weeks ago.

I wouldnt trust what you see on those sites, they have algorithms to drive engagement, not inform.

Amen to this. I can't turn something off or tune something out faster than when I hear "L69xxDDYoLo Tweeted - '..........:". NOBODY CARES. STOP AMPLIFYING NONSENSE FROM NOBODIES!

generally I agree, but this is not about trusting a theory....these are real actual people putting their face on camera and spewing this idiocracy like this ad will usher in the 2nd wave of Schmatzism. Platforms like FB and twitter/X which are only text based and generic profile photos are much easier to dismiss as bots or whatever. But on TT, people seem to have no filter. And you can go back into their past posts and see how today it was American Eagle and last week it was something else that makes life unbearable.

It's a self fufilling thing though. Everyone on-line is looking to generate content. We went from a world where there were 3 TV channels generating video content to now every other person in the world has their own channel they need constant content for. And once someone finds something to make content about, others will jump in and then the more it trends the more it incentivizes others to make videos about the same thing. And of course that spawns the counter content saying the original content is dumb/wrong, etc. And then there is the counter counter content and so on.

That is because they are getting engagement!

If you posted a thoughtful, informative post on tik-tok there is no chance of going viral. However, if you post ridiculous things then there is a chance of going viral. The platform rewards people saying crazy things because that is what drives engagement. When an issue comes out that is easy to comment on and has ridiculous takes then it is easy to add your own take and hope that your post is the one that goes viral.

and can somebody give me the nutshell of this current outrage, please.

I don't social media, and keep my news intake to... news.

Basically a physically blessed woman is doing a commercial for a clothing brand and some folks are outraged

But specifically...does the ad flaunt her boobs or something? Nudity? Camel toe? Graphic sex act? Nothing more than a curvy attractive celeb getting her photo taken- why would that be any different from a million similar photos and ads?

People really are just the worst. Seriously.

God forbid a company puts a good looking person in a clothing ad. That strategy leads to pearl clutching outrage but having obese people in their underwear rap about applying "full body deodorant" to their netherregions is perfectly fine.

Make it make sense.

It says she has "nice genes" which then switches to "jeans". And then it sounds like it zooms in on her blue eyes and she says her genes/jeans are blue. This leads some people to comment that the company is pushing white genes as being superior.

WHO CARES? I couldn't turn those vids off fast enough. Why in the world are we caring about what people with Elmer's Glue color skin and doo-rags have to say about anything? Why would you give people like this any of your time, attention or waste any of your auditory senses to these mutants?

She flaunts her good genes aka boobs/assets. You should watch the video. Mind you, she is older than those 16 year olds in Norway so it may not be your thing ;)

I will 2nd this. My TT feed is just unbearable right now. I use it for recipes, lego and people falling down type videos. Hey, I am a simple man with simple tastes :lmao: However, it seems every other video is a content creator actively defending that this is N*zi propaganda. It isn't just an outlier. It is dozens and dozens of real people, like MT mentioned, you can view their content and they have prior videos. No matter how much I click the "not interested" button so I can hopefully get back to my content, it doesn't work. I would miss all the creators on there that I follow, but maybe TT going away would not be a bad thing as it has slowly gotten worse and worse.

To be clear, I am not registered with TikTok and never look at it, so people there are not the ones I am referencing. I am sure clips from there make it over to X/Twitter, though.

Lots of chatter also about the Jaguar vs. new Volvo ad (Volvo ad is 3 1/2 minutes long and is superb). Just a huge divide in how folks view society in this country encapsulated in that comparison.

Also, the jeans v. genes joke could be taken to be suggesting that the best "genes" are blonde haired and blue eyed if you want to overthink it.

Yeah these tech companies don't care what you are interested in. They are trying to maximize engagement and addiction.

If you want to overthink it that makes it even worse because they are saying people should deny their true self to conform to this specific standard of "good". I think like all things, it's somewhere in between. People are probably overreacting but also I don't believe nobody involved anywhere in the process of planning and making this didn't also see this connection and either agree with the concept or like the idea that it could cause controversy. I find it hard to care much anymore for any of it.
