The text thing is nothing new. I think people are just pissed that the new $15 more plan doesn't include text. Text messages are how they are raping people, because they know everyone uses them. Not to mention their packages are either $5 for an amount your sure to go over, or $15. They obviously don't ave a $10 mid range plan, because that's the one everyone would get.

Curious (I looked and didn't see the numbers)--what are the thresholds on text messages?

Looks like i wont be getting the 3G afterall, at least not until later this year. I switched to ATT last year JUST SO I COULD GET AN iPHone 3G. Now, they tell me that i am not eligible for the discounted price until December of this year. No chance i pay full price for a 16GB model when i can probably get the 32 later this year at a discounted price.

I'm considering just getting a new iPod (mine broke) and saying to he11 with the iPhone.

I'm worried that to use Exchange, I'll have to sign up for the business plan. I will be so extremely pissed if this is the case.

I've read accounts that it's not true, and common sense tells me it shouldn't be true, but on AT&T's website, it says for those who want to use exchange, you have to get the business plan for $45/month. No..chance.

I will not lose one minute of sleep if they try to pull that crap and I hack my phone to circumvent their pettiness.

Honestly I think the old iPhone is a better deal. At least for me.
Yep. If you don't care about GPS or faster speeds, the old iphone deal was great. Best deal of any smartphone that I know of.They're making up for lost time with the 3G version, nickel and diming people. They're charging a $18 upgrade fee for people who already HAD an iphone, who want the new one, who already have AT&T service. RIDICULOUS.

Disappointing. I thought, for some reason, they would treat the "early adopters" better than those new to the iPhone, not worse, LOL.

See what I mean. Text messages = ;) :moneybag: :moneybag: for providers.Kind of a pretty big gap between the 200 messages, and the 1500 wouldn't you say? We can send a guy to the moon, but one of the biggest cell carriers can't even offer a $10 1000 text plan. I am pretty sure Verizon does something similar as well.

All of this makes me happy that I am an old customer with the old iphone plan. However, being with Cingular since it started, the $18 is standard and have had to pay it every time I changed plans

Not much is changing for the average consumer who has the first gen iPhone. The 3G phone is all about business since it's finally Exchange compatible.

Thanks Acer. SSL just makes the site secure (basically) so you can do things like enter credit card #s. No SSL = No CCs = X for me
This is partially true, and most people never click on the actual certificate to see if it was signed by a CA or self signed. You are fairly safe on a CA signed cert, but depending on the verification level of the cert who actually sees the information may not necessarily be who you think. The dangers in a self signed cert are that the encryption levels may be extremely low.

I am as big a fan of Apple products as anyone else but there is no way I ever buy an iPhone at the prices they are at. The monthly fees are a huge turnoff as well. I will most likely get a new phone next month and the iPhone is the last one I would buy right now.

Wednesday... Thursday... Friday morning...

It's almost time fellas. With all of my overthinking, I've started to ponder which color to go with.

I've been heavily in favor of the black model for over a month now, but just recently the white has started to grow on me a bit.

My only problem, being that I have yet to see the two up close and personal is if I'll think the white is too ...I dunno ...Feminine?

Which do you plan on buying?

Without having to run through the whole post, how is the iPhone as an actual phone? I know that it's got a lot of cool bells and whistles, but as a phone is it a 10? A 7? A 4?

Just curious. I haven't even really seen an iPhone up close and personal but my Verizon contract is up and my current phone is hitting the crapper at 100 mph so I'll be needing something else very soon.

I am having lunch tomorrow at the distribution warehouse for the new iPhone. There will be pallets and pallets of new shiny 3G iPhones, and absolutely zero chance of me getting past the five guards to even get into the single doorway where the phones are kept.

I rate the phone as a 4 or 5 at best. Very disappointing.First of all, AT&T's service in my area (I live just north of San Francisco in Marin County)is very spotty, even on the main highway 101 corridor. My old verizon service was a 10out of 10 in comparison.Ok, that's the crappy coverage which isn't really Apple's fault but it makes the phone much lessenjoyable for me.But now for the phone features that bug me:1) no speed dial keys: isn't it great to be able to glance down at you stupid regular cel phone, hold downthe 2 button and it calls home? Well, there's no such thing on the iphone. You can have a favorites listand you can set your "home" key so you can double-click it to get to your favorites list (which is a goodthing) but you have to look at the phone and touch the right one in the list to make the call.2) the touch screen itself is really great for most stuff, but for the phone, it's very easy to dial the wrong number.3) when you make a call on a plain old cel phone, you always have the keypad right there at your disposal to typein an extension or navigate a voicemail menu or whatever. With the iphone, when you make a call, it puts a grid ofoption buttons in the middle of the screen (keypad, speaker phone, mute, hold, etc) so you need to go one leveldeeper in the menu to get to the keypad. Again, easy to hit the wrong button, especially when driving.I gotta say, if I didn't have a 2 year contract, I'd go back to verizon and a "plain old phone" in a second. The web, ipod, maps, etc features really are great but, man, why can't it be a god phone too?!?! It's reallydisappointing to me in that regard to say the least.my 2 pennies.

As a phone, it's pretty good. If you like voice-dialing, you won't like it because it doesn't have that. But, with v2.0, there will be contact search, the phone works very well, and depending on your reception levels, it's between an 8-9 out of 10. User interface to switch calls is very easy, touch calling of any contact, easy to add contacts, easy to assign pictures to contacts, easy to do a group call, just the entire process is easy.

 The new Iphone plan is a little more expensive, but in general it's not much different that other carriers plans. My main complaint would be AT&T raping people on texting plans. But this isn't specific to the Iphone, or AT&T IIRC.

I'm leaning towards the white primarily because I've seen pictures with the black having tons of fingerprints on it. I think the white isn't as aesthetically pleasing, but if it hides smudges better, it might be worth it.I'm going for the higher capacity model in either black or white, likely white. We'll see.

Any word on in-store demo models? I'm gonna need to see or myself, White's growing on me by the day.

I cannot justify spending ~$75 x 12 = $900 on a phone plan per year. Just cannot do it. ~$600 is enough and in this day and age a phone is simply a phone to me and not a "do-all-to-end-all" device.

What comparable service/phone/plan would you choose instead, and how much cheaper all together is it than the iphone?

I iPhone would be an upgrade for me so price point is very key to me if/when I make an upgrade. If smart phones remain at a high monthly cost or high introductory cost than in the future a smart phone is not for me. Apple, and they can because people will buy them, are losing customers like myself from making the jump into the smart phone market. Apple for as much as they would like to tout "innovation" have not innovated the smart phone market. Sure, the iPhone, is a spectacular piece of equipment but it is costly.

Understood, smartphones are in no way cheap. It's a good call to stay away for as long as possible. As soon as I bought my first Blackberry I was hooked and couldn't imagine going back to a traditional cell phone.

Funny stuff: http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/09/rogers-...for-30-a-month/

Rogers in canada was offering exhorbitant rate plans for their customers. 3 year contracts, huge monthyl payments, for little data.

Petitions were signed, thousands voiced disgust, Apple severely scaled back the number of iphones to be available in Canada - and now they've reversed their position. Great example of the power of the customers.

Those kind, gentle Canadians have been oh-so-politely demanding a few heads on sticks ever since Rogers' super-spendy iPhone 3G price plans were announced. Well, apparently their cries have been heard, and now Rogers is launching a promotional offer along with the iPhone of 6GB of data for $30 a month -- not quite unlimited data, but close enough -- which can be added on top of any regular voice plan. The promo will be available for iPhone buyers who activate with a three year contract before August 31. Also, perhaps in a bid to dispel some nasty rumors about a major iPhone shortage, Rogers will be hosting 8AM launch day events at six Rogers Plus stores in major Canadian cities, complete with a free breakfast. Mmm, breakfast.

I expect the price of the phones to go down, but I don't see the pricing of data plans going down any. I believe AT&T & Verizon cleaned up at the recent FCC auction, so that means nothing is going to change. There service will be better, but I doubt they lower prices.Honesty, I am most pissed at the cost of text messages. That should be included in the data plan.

I'm looking at getting a new phone and while I thought I had to have the iphone, I'm now thinking of going with the Touch Diamond when it comes out. My problem is that up in the North Bay (north of san fran) the coverage for an iphone is spotty however I need to see what the price difference is going to be between the 2 phones.

Seems to me your beef is more with the phone companies than with Apple. Apple isn't charging you the monthly fees, AT&T is.

http://gizmodo.com/5017957/iphone-clone-ba...s-the-iphoniestThis is a good article comparing some of the new iphone competitors. I don't think they did the Touch Diamond, but there are a few others. None of them rated as high as the iphone.

eta* My recommendation to someone that lives in an area with bad service is to not get locked into a new contract. The FCC auction is sure to result in big changes in the wireless coverage in the next few years. The only question is when...

I'm going to head to an ATT store tomorrow at 11ish - I figure the lines will hopefully be died down by then.

What kind of inventory are these stores holding?

Also - will a simple sync tonight be all I need to do with my old phone so that I'm able to sync up my new phone tomorrow when I get home?

Your best bet is an Apple Store at 11ish. AT&T doesn't seem like they get a massive share of the stock. At least that's the way it was on the original launch day.

Attempts were made, but nothing successful. I have never seen even the suits of this company so hyper, even during the launch of the first iPhone. Many people from Apple were there to make sure things were running smoothly.

I called my local store that I went to for the last launch, and predictably they said they had no details - the lying punks. They said they wouldn't know how many the store got until later tonight - total BS.

I read somewhere else though that other stores, allegedly in the south, AT&T stores, have received about 80 per store.

I'm not planning to wait in line or anything, so I'm just going to hope that the supply in my city isn't exhausted by demand before about, oh, 8:30am :lmao: .

My debate is whether even to bother tomorrow. I think going after work may be a waste of my time...I think stock will be limited. I might try some time early next week and try to grab one...
