The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

For all those without service, I think Gizmodo has unlocked the v2.0 OS. Might want to check it out.

Also, how are the apps? I think these extras, more than the 3g, is going to drive iPhone sales. Thoughts?

Got mine. White 16GB look SICK.
How about some commentary One? How are the 3G speeds? As advertised?
Still not activated yet. 22 countries trying to activate at once might take a while. I've got a ton of work to do so I'll try again later.
Wife's is up and running. 3G is pretty much as explained. Faster than Edge, not WiFi though. I'll look through it and give some impressions after I inhale my lunch.

As with the first generation iPhone, this one looks like it rocks. However, I have endlessly heard that the AT&T network and their coverage suxor. Worth it to switch from Verizon just to get the iPhone?

Why not just wait a few days to begin with? To me it definitely wouldn't be worth the hassle you have gone through today. By the time this is all said and done you would have spent 6 hours at the store. Not to mention the time wasted when you keep trying to connect to the crashed itunes.
I had the day off. Also, I was hoping to have the phone with me this weekend, since I'm traveling up to Lake Erie and wanted to test the signal strength across Ohio. I'm a Verizon customer and I have no idea how well AT&T coverage is. (I don't trust those signal maps they give at the stores) Glad to see pigskinliquors got his. Let us know what you think.
So far it's awesome. I can turn it on, but still can't get it to work

Mine's fully functional. Working on downloading apps and inputting my contacts.

Well my iphone is worthless as well. I always wait to update my software but I was so excited about the apps that I chose not to wait. Big mistake. Not sure if it can be fixed when itunes opens up again but if it is not fixed, I am going to be very upset and may never buy apple again. Will keep you updated (as if anyone cares)
Updated: Phone is now working and I am loading AIM right now. I like that apps can be downloaded straight from the phone and I like that there were some subtle changes as well (like calendar now lists the location)

Are there any Aps that look good? I don't use facebook/ myspace/ aim. Other than that, i don't really see anything that is a "must have." Games get old, I can get news & weather from the net...

I got a bunch of free ones already and the only one that I can say is really awesome is the AOL radio. I was able to listen to WFAN with a 2 minute delay. Ill take that anyday. My iphone just became a radio. It also has cool stations like ALL Metallica or ALL Pearl Jam.I really like it :blackdot:

The App Store is where the iPhone is really going to separate itself from the competition. Remember this is only Day One doe the App Store, the addition functionality that third-party apps add to the iPhone is something RIM et. al. will really struggle to match.

when is it safe for original iphone users to DL the software - hearing stories of people freezing or losing their data by DL earlier today!

posting from my fully functional phone. Unbelievable! 3g is faster than I expected. Using will

Wifi is also amazing. The keyboard will take some time to get used to, but overall it's unbelievable.

Monkeyball is impressive and GPS rocks.

called verizon today to see if I could get out of my contract and they are giving me a hard time. I only have till March 09 but I don't think I want to wait.

:excited: Pandora on the iPhone.

Hmmmm.... Now if I can listen to Pandora over the cellular (not WiFi) connection, that's pretty compelling.

ETA: it looks like it does stream over the cellular network, even EDGE. No need to buy a new handheld Sirius radio now. :excited:

The MLB at bat APP is awesome. I can't wait to see what the NFL will do with their APP. Maybe MyFantasyLeague.com can make an app for their users. The possibilities are endless. And this is without a 3G. My old iPhone all of a sudden feels new again. BTW Scrabble, Hold Em, and other apps, I'm very happy.

I agree an NFL, and a MFL game center would be sick!

Day 2:

Just got back from the Sacramento Apple Store. Line goes from the Apple Store (in the middle of the mall) all the way to the end, then curls around in front of two stores on the opposite side.

:lmao:

Went to the Apple Store today, 3+ hour wait.

The new apps have made my old phone new again, so I may just hold off for a week or so. No way in hell I'm waiting that long to pick up a phone.

A couple of apps I downloaded: MLB, Pandora, Weatherbug, Loopt, Itunes Remote, Box Office, Ebay, and Google.

Loving the new stuff!

Download Shazam (free)

When you're in your car and hear a song you like, but don't recognize the name or artist, use you iPhone's Shazam app.

Just Hold the iPhone to the speaker for a few seconds, then it will contact a database and come back with all of the songs info.

It even gives you the option to download the song off of iTunes. Also gives you youtube links of the media associated with it.

:goodposting: a very cool app.

I am not saying it wouldn't be cool but why do you need a mfl app when you have safari on the phone. Is there something I am missing?

I picked up my iPhone 3G from a nearby AT&T store yesterday morning. Got there at 6:00 am and was #31 on line. The store only got 50 units, and I picked up the very last 16GB Black they had.

Some observations:

(1) The 3G is an improvement, but it's not wifi. Edge was absolutely dreadful, so this is actually a welcome addition.

(2) I can't believe how dirty the back of my phone looks. Due to reception problems, Apple replaced the frosted-metal backing with a shiny plastic that picks up fingerprints every time the phone is handled.

(3) Someone here mentioned a MFL app, and if you have Safari, why would you need that. Try the NY Times app -- sure, it's the same content as nytimes.com on the Safari, just much easier to use.

(4) Love the GPS with Google Maps. Use the satellite image and zoom in on your house. Then walk around your house and watch the blue dot follow you around. Great stuff!

Apps so far:

Monkeyball: Great fun.

Pandora: Outstanding! Anyone know how to keep Pandora playing while using other phone functions?

AOL Radio: Outstanding! Same question as above.

 Shazam is absolutely amazing. Pandora is solid, too.

Finally stumped Shazam with some obscure English folk. It wasn't easy, though.

Shazam is pretty cool to mess around with. I was turning to the music channels on my tv, and it would get it almost every time.

AOL radio streams great with the edge for the local chanels, but certain other channels were grey and wouldn't play. Anyone else have this problem? Maybe I need to be on wifi for certain channels.

A few other fun aps that were free,

-phone saber- makes you phone sound like a light saber when you swing it :nerd:

-ipint- your iphone looks like a glass of beer, when you tilt to drink it empties. :banned:

-TapTap- like guitar hero for the iphone.

I haven't bought any yet, but these free ones are cool.

1 million sold.

“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”
