Seriously, if I were to get to the counter after waiting in line and they only had white iPhones, the police would be involved.
My Treo finally took its last dump so i went and upgrade to the Instinct. The web browser does kinda suck, but the Nav, voice command and simply everything plan sure make up for it!! If i need to hit the web that bad i always have a laptop with me.http://gizmodo.com/5017957/iphone-clone-ba...s-the-iphoniestThis is a good article comparing some of the new iphone competitors. I don't think they did the Touch Diamond, but there are a few others. None of them rated as high as the iphone.I'm looking at getting a new phone and while I thought I had to have the iphone, I'm now thinking of going with the Touch Diamond when it comes out. My problem is that up in the North Bay (north of san fran) the coverage for an iphone is spotty however I need to see what the price difference is going to be between the 2 phones.
eta* My recommendation to someone that lives in an area with bad service is to not get locked into a new contract. The FCC auction is sure to result in big changes in the wireless coverage in the next few years. The only question is when...
Black ones look much better. But white will far outsell as it's more clearly recognizable as an apple product. Apple, at the register, will tap into AT&T's database. They will be able to tell that way, but be sure you've confirmed your upgrade eligibility on your AT&T website page.Hows this going to work with the discounts?I'm eligible for an upgrade/contract extension with AT&T, so I should be getting the 199 one. Will I just be able to tell them at the Apple store? Can they look up my AT&T info?
Possibly, but white only comes in the 16GB ($299) variety, whereas black comes back as 8GB ($199) and 16GB ($299). Might cut into sales of white at first, but we'll see. My biggest deal is smudges. I like the look of the black, although I agree the original iPhone looked better than either. I'll try to pick both up in the store and decide there.Black ones look much better. I bet they have a surplus of the more expensive ones, so that people are forced to by them when the blacks run out. I feel bad for the future employees of the BBQ joint.I do love this company. The article in Wired was excellent a few months ago (Evil Genius was the title I think) comparing them to Google and how Google does all the nicey "do no harm" inclusive, great employee perks, "we're all going to make the world better together" shtick and Jobs just runs it with everyone job scared and ruthless and manipulating their advantage where they can can controlling everything keeping all the spoils of their success to themselves. I don't mean that in a bad way. If I were Jobs, I'd run it more like he does than the way Google is run I think.

I don't get it. Where's the poignancy? What is her point? So on the Today Show (or something like it) this morning, they showed how people were lined up around the block waiting to get one of these things. My wife (wicked smaht) asked a very poigniant question when she saw this - "How many of those people are carrying a credit card balance? If so GET OUT OF THE LINE!"

No, I wasn’t. There’s no way I would waste that much time for a phone. On my way to work I made a point to look over at a fairly large AT& T store by my office and there were probably 60-80 people outside. Bunch of idiots if you ask me, but to each their own.My question is still there. Is it the standing in line part? Is it the buying a new phone part? What does any of that have to do with credit card balances? What is her reason and the correlation between credit card balances and them getting out of line if they have one?You were standing in line, weren't you?I don't get it. Where's the poignancy? I would think it's fairly obvious but...People with outstanding credit card balances (ones they're not paying off every month) ought not be spending $300 on a cell phone. No, I wasn’t. Gizmodo, et al is reporting the the activation has gone very poorly because of the demand on the itune servers. Lots of people told to go home with the iphone and activate later. That, couple with the poor mobileme launch, seems unusual for Apple. Usually they seem to anticipate better than this....cool that i was trying to update my software on my 1st generation iPhone today so i could get the web apps and since the apple store is down due to all the new phones, MY phone is now useless. Everything is whiped off of it and I cannot restore it to factory settings in itunes because the store is down. So now I'm punished and have to go without my phone for God knows how long because Apple's servers can't handle the amount of new phone traffic, when i SHOULD just be able to at least just restore my phone to the way it was before the update. But nope. I want to break something.
According to the ATT guys at the store I was at...Once the centrel time zone stores were on the network at 9am EST, it shut everything down to a near halt. People waited 40 minutes just to activate their phone.Gizmodo, et al is reporting the the activation has gone very poorly because of the demand on the itune servers. Why not just wait a few days to begin with? To me it definitely wouldn't be worth the hassle you have gone through today. By the time this is all said and done you would have spent 6 hours at the store. Not to mention the time wasted when you keep trying to connect to the crashed itunes.BTW, the outage is being termed the "iPocalypse."My story...Live in the Cincinnati area
Went to the AT&T store this morning. It's a newly opened AT&T store, so I was hoping most wouldn't know about it. The gamble paid off and when I pulled up to the parking lot at 6:40AM EST, there was a line of about 15-20.
Got in line and figured out I was number 17. Looked around and noticed that most people looked like they had only been there an hour or two before me, except for the 2 guys in the front of the line (found out later, they've been there since 12:30 AM EST...ugghh)
About 7:30am, an AT&T employee comes outside. After talking with the first 15 people, he tells the guy in front of me that they no longer have any 16gb phones, just 8gb.![]()

I ask the guy, how in the hell do you run out of 16g models in the span of 15 people? He tells me that his store was only shipped 30 iphones. I'm completely dumbfounded at this point, since everything that I had read on the net, said that most stores were getting in between 100-150 phones.
Then the ATT guy tells me that they're supposed to get a new shipment within the next 3-7 days, which also contradicts the things I've read on the net. (Stores getting new shipments every 24 hrs).
I take about 5 seconds to realize that it would do me know good to throw a hissy fit, other than personal satisfaction. He tells everyone who wants the 16g model, that they'll be placed on an ordered list. As new shipments come in, we'll get a phone call.
I then wait another hr in line, just to go inside the store and give my drivers license, CC, and phone number to a lady.![]()
The only good thing...they had 3 display phones on hand, so I was able to check them out in person. They're pretty slick and hopefully worth the hassle.
Anyone else have better luck?

We differ on that part. But I was surprised at how stark a line Wired drew between how the apple people are treated compared to google people. Now maybe it was more a relative thing in that google goes overboard with perks and such. But apparently, there is a huge difference in how Jobs does things. May not be how I'd do it but it's hard to say it's not working for him.I feel bad for the future employees of the BBQ joint.I do love this company. I'm sorry Adonis. Apple Security emailed the other day asking if you were serious about hacking the phone and one thing led to another. I think they know...JMy story:
Got to a local store at 7:45am that is by my house, on the outskirts of town, very new, quite big and assumed to be prepared for the day.
I get there and the line is already about 40 people deep. @#$@# @#@#%@.
So, I get out and stand in line. AT&T people come through, asking us if we want water and whether we know what phone we want, whether we're upgrade-qualified, etc. Most everyone in line knows what they want and their status. They are asked how many phones there are, and they say "WE don't know" at which point my head nearly explodes on my shoulders from the sheer stupidity of such a comment.
So I ask if they can find out. They say we'll try. 8am rolls around and some people move in. In retrospect, not knowing this at the time, this is when all the fit hit the shan. You have activations from the east coast going on, activations just starting in the central time zone, and all the people upgrading to new itunes, new 2.0 software, and re-activating their phones for those upgrade. Oh, and there are these kinds of things going on ALL OVER THE WORLD TOO.
SO back to 8am. Line moves slowly. 8:15 rolls around, still 30 people in line. They come out and tell us that they'll likely have enough for all of us, but are running out of 8GB phones. Great. I don't care. I want the white 16GB phones. People in front of me don't move.
8:30 rolls around. 25 people still in line. Waters handed out. Guy comes around again asking what each of us wants, and still says there should be enough. From his estimates though, I wasnt' so sure.
8:45 comes around and there are about 20 people in line, and they're out of phones. People are pissed. THey're told they can order phones in store, pay for them, and have them shipped as soon as a few days. If I had wanted a phone in 3 days, I would have waited 3 days to come into the store to buy one. I'm here today. I want one today. Give me a damn phone.
But, apparently the inner monologue didn't get across to the people, or it didn't matter, and I left the store in search of a close alternative. I find another store about 3 miles away with a shorter line. It's on a busy road, but is a small shop. Apparently, there might be JUST enough phones for me there too.
But, guess what, they're out of 8gb phones too. APparently the stores were only getting about 30 phones or so, with only 10 of them being 8GB models. F'n great job Apple. Ridiculous.
So, I'm told there are about 13 16GB phones left, with 10 of them being white. GREAT, that's what I want. But I'm right on the fringe of people if everyone ahead of me gets a phone, I am out of luck. Luckily, a few ladies didn't get their upgrades, and a pissed off boyfriend was waiting on his girl and had to let those behind him in front of him because he couldn't go in the store until she came.
Oh yeah, that reminds me. AT&T stores were acting like fort knox facilities with only a certain number of people allowed in at a time, and the doors locked in between people going in and out, like we're all bandits and are gonna break down doors to get iphones.
So, I get up to the door, the guy in front of me keeps looking for his girlfriend to show up, and the people inside are taking forever. If she comes before the next person was let in, odds are I wouldn't get a phone. An eternity passes, and finally one person leaves, and he's skipped over again, and I get to go in. All in all, once in the store, it was quick. Went ot kiosk entered my info, got a receipt. Took the receipt to counter, paid, got my phone and left within about 10 minutes.
But I still do not have a functional phone. Once upgraded, my old phone stopped working, and I cannot activate my iphone. @#$%^@ @#% @#$ ^@#@ @#$. I've been sitting at my comptuer for an hour or more trying to connect to the itunes server to activate my damn phone, with no luck. I'm pissed. I"m supposed to be leaving town but have no functioning phone. GARRRR.
Ok, i'm more calm now. Still waiting, damn apple.
I had the day off. Also, I was hoping to have the phone with me this weekend, since I'm traveling up to Lake Erie and wanted to test the signal strength across Ohio. I'm a Verizon customer and I have no idea how well AT&T coverage is. (I don't trust those signal maps they give at the stores) Glad to see pigskinliquors got his. Let us know what you think. Why not just wait a few days to begin with? To me it definitely wouldn't be worth the hassle you have gone through today. By the time this is all said and done you would have spent 6 hours at the store. Not to mention the time wasted when you keep trying to connect to the crashed itunes.
Wasn't it PT Barnum who said, "You can fool some people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time"? Well, Jobs sure showed him.iTunes activation servers go down, iPhone 3G customers being sent home unactivated, first-gen iPhone customers stuck with dead iPhones.
