The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

I still can't figure out how to get my music to play on other computers. No problems with the home PC. But I can't get it to work on PCs at work. The songs are all grayed out. About 20 will transfer (out of 100+ that I've bought through itunes). I tried authorizing the work PC. I've even tried just playing songs from the iphone and using the PC speakers to no avail. Something else is when I go to sync it says it is going to replace all the songs on my ipod with songs from my work PC (there aren't any).

:thumbup:Just heard adobe has said it is working with apple for an iphone version of flash
They better get with it. It's the biggest single complaint i have with the iphone. I'd GLADLY sacrifice battery life to be able to view some damn flash content.

I play mine all day, I just plug the green speaker plug into my headphone jack.

Just upgraded to the iPhone from a Treo 700wx (Windows Mobile). So far I have to say that I'm very pleased. The interface is incredibly clean and easy to use. I'm syncing my calendar and contacts with Microsoft Outlook on my work laptop and syncing all media to my home PC.

After researching various iPhone cases, I went ahead and ordered a SwitchEasy CapsuleRebel case which should be delivered in the next day or two. Next up is to upgrade my eWallet application to the iPhone version and start syncing that with my PC as well.

I see these games:

1. iMafia

2. Mafia Live

3. iMob

Which one of these is the best? I started "iMafia", and it's lots of fun. Wondering if the Mafia Live (which as great reviews, but costs money) is worth it?

Anyone try these?

I'm on Mafia Live. So far it's pretty fun although I'm not part of a squad.

Is it better than the free ones?
I haven't played the free ones so I'm not much help there.

I'm on Mafia Live...have a small group so far but getting to the point where I need to start getting in with bigger gangs. It's on sale right now, so I'd say get it sooner rather than later. I hear that imob is the most popular, but it also has rampant cheating (people have insanely large bankrolls). Mafia Live had some server load issues over the weekend when they made a recent upgrade, but things have been better over the last 12-24 hours.I'd say it's currently my favorite app since it lets you do other things while you wait for your revenue and health to grow back up between sessions. If you want to join up with me, I can give you a referral code to get you started with $10k (helps a lot with getting you through the early levels quicker). Same goes for anyone else already in the game.

False Hopes: Adobe Desperate to Install Flash on the iPhone?

By Charlie Sorrel February 02, 2009 | 8:35:57 AMCategories: iPhone

The following quote is from Adobe's CEO Shantanu Narayan, regarding Flash on the iPhone.

It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating [...] The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver.

What on Earth can this mean? Apple has repeatedly poured scorn on Flash, calling it too slow and inefficient for the iPhone and even saying that it doesn't work well on desktop machines. Adobe, for its part, keeps yapping away and snapping at the iPhone's heels like a faithful, over enthusiastic doggy. Back in September last year, Adobe's Paul Petiem said that the company was already working on Flash for the iPhone.

We know that Apple, and Steve Jobs in particular, has a history of denying new products and then shipping them soon after, so we'll leave aside the speculation and look at some facts.

First, does the iPhone need Flash? YouTube, which is Flash-based on the web, recoded all of its video in the h.264 codec to run on the iPhone. The Safari Web browser even shows a still preview of any YouTube video embedded in the page. The seamless result works great, and is Flash-free.

The other major use of Flash (other than terrible, annoying websites which should frankly be banned) is in interactive web services like Flickr slideshows or "cloud" photo editing applications. A fair point, until you realize that the tiny iPhone screen isn't great for any kind of editing, photos or words. If a company has to recode a site to fit into the iPhone's screen, why not do it in as lightweight a way possible and skip Flash altogether. This is what Flickr has actually done.

And possibly even more important is the drain on resources. Last night, the Lady's MacBook was screaming like a leaf-blower after thirty seconds of YouTube video. This isn't an old machine either -- it is just over a year old and is stuffed with RAM. If Flash can drain her battery like an Englishman can drain a pint of lager, surely an iPhone version would be even harder on the tiny battery.

Last, for Flash to behave as it does on the "desktop web", it would need to work as a plugin for Mobile Safari. As of this writing, this is not allowed. Apple, of course, can stick whatever it likes inside Safari, but third parties are prohibited. The Google Maps application for the iPhone was actually written by Apple, not Google as many people think, as Apple likes to control what is going on. If Flash were implemented, it would come from in-house, not from Adobe.

Which brings us back to that odd quote from Narayan, "Apple and Adobe are collaborating." It seems straightforward enough, but is likely to be just bluster and wishful thinking. In fact, compare it to a statement made by Narayan on the Adobe earnings conference call, all the way back in March last year:

we’re also committed to bringing the Flash experience to the iPhone and we’ll work with Apple. [emphasis added]

As someone new to the iPhone, what are some recommended forums to visit for info on reviews, accessories, apps, customizations, tips/tricks, hacks, etc.?

I realize it's probably listed in this thread somewhere, but I'd prefer to not have to dig through 40 pages.

There are some wicked competitors on the horizon.

The Toshiba TG01 looks gross. Its a WinMo device that's all touchscreen and thinner then the iPhone and packs a RIDICULOUS processor.

The Pre looks good as well.

Mozilla is open-sourcing the concept of a phone and while it's early, the dialog and throw-away mockups look awesome. Check this out and tell me you wouldn't be at least a little curious to see an OLED keyboard come to light... Mozilla phone design lead's page.

Does anyone use google calendars? I wonder if there is some way for me to sync a google calendar with my work calendar, then bring in the google one. The calendar piece is going to KILL ME!
Google Calendar Sync
OK, I can now sync my work calendar with google calendars, which lets me view it on a website on the iphone. But isn't there was way to get that google calendar into the native iPhone calendar?

Not that I've been able to find...

Check out the TG01 clip...can't believe how thin it ishttp://technmarketing.com/2009/02/05/every...ob-than-others/

Saw on Sternfannetwork that an app for Sirius connection that works on Wifi, 3G and Edge was just submitted. Will cost $12 and should be available in a few weeks.

Thin is good, but the processor is the real Gem here. It should be exciting to finally see a phone with enough horsepower to make WinMo more then a mediocre OS.

Any idea if you'd need a Sirius subscription?I've had my iPhone for about a week now, and I've never been an Apple fanboy, but this thing is geeky life-altering awesome.

Yes- you'd need at least a subscription to the internet feed. The website for the app is here.

I got the Griffin Wave case. It's mediocre. I'm starting to wish I hadn't bought a case at all.

I guess it seems like it protects it, but it sure adds bulk. : (

I went with the InvisiShield from Zagg- it's a little tricky getting it on at first, but it keeps the screen clean and scratchproof and it adds nothing to the device other than a protective film. Sometimes they have codes like SITEWIDE20 or SITEWIDE30 that you can use to get a discount from their site (it's in stores too).

There's a smaller, more concise thread here.
Bad link or did it get pruned?
Bad link- fixed it.

We're finally getting rid of our 3-4 year old phones on Verizon and switching to ATT for the company discount.

My wife and I are both going to be getting iPhones on the new plan.

I have an iPod touch that I liked alot (hence my leaning towards the iPhone) and will be selling to subsidize.

We went into Verizon and ATT and played with multiple phones but just kept coming back to the iPhone.

I just hope there's not a new model that I want more out a month later like when I bought the Touch.

I see alot of pages in the thread and will browse through as I have time but any suggestions for a new iPhone user?

Are there any good sites for a quick overview and all the info you need that Apple doesn't provide?

Jailbreak or not to jailbreak? Will prob decide after playing with the phone for a while but would like to unlock video capture for quick videos of the kids.

I saw a few list of good apps in the Touch thread linked above, what would be good to add right off the bat for getting started?

(If there's a good summary post or place to start in this thread, please point me to it)

TIA!

Thanks! Do you guys pay the extra $$ for texts or is there a way to forgo them with email, IM, etc?
I pay $5 a month for 200 texts, but most of the time I use google chat.
If you aren't using your phone and its locked, will it alert you if someone sends you a message? My wife and I were looking for ways to send quick notes the other person would be alerted to right away without having to be logged into a certain application at the time... kind of like texts I guess but without the extra $5.

It tells you when locked that you have a text (just opens a box on the lock screen). I also have mine set to vibrate until I unlock my phone and actually look at the text message in SMS.
