I think that taking the original iPhone to 3G speed was revolutionary. Then doubling the speed to 3GS (which Apple claimed was 2x as fast) was similarly exciting. The next logical step would have been going to 4G.

Short of that, and short of a Verizon announcement, why not work in cloud based iTunes (via the Lala acquisition)? Why not make the video chat open to any video client? I just think that with the Incredible, EVo, and new line of Bolds coming out (with BB 6) that Apple didn't maker as big of a splash as they normally do. The iPhone is a great phone and the iPhone 4 is no doubt an improvement - I just don't see it winning any more market share then if they'd simply left the 3GS out there.

OS4 is not "better" than Android 2.2 (or 2.1 for that matter). Fyi.Battery life seems fine on most Android phones. Video chat works great, http://www.androidcentral.com/video-chat-demo-sprint-evo-4g. And yes, you can edit HD video on Android.

Again, hard to surprise thanks to Engadget. Make no mistake, video chat will a TON of these. Regular consumers won't know/don't care if a few other phones had it first. This is groundbreaking and drop-dead sexy in a mass consumer product like the iPhone. I can see the ads already...

It's true. Apple really hit this one out of the park. Will sell like crazy, again.

It looks like they made some nice improvements, but lets not kid ourselves if Apple trotted the same guts as their last model in a slightly slimmer shell it would sell like crazy. There is just an Apple can do no wrong mentality out there right now.

I'm not so sure about that. But it's a moot point -- they didn't do anything close to that. The EVO etc are catching up to the iPhone and this was a pretty huge upgrade to keep them securely at the #1 phone spot.

Again.. a few points:1) Had this phone not been leaked months ago to endagadget, sentiment here would have been much better than it is now. 2) iPhone is not about the hardware.. it's about the apps/software. As it is now it's a tiny, super high res phone with great sensors, dual cameras, and a plenty fast processor. NOt sure how much more you want in there from a hardware standpoint. The apps will fill it it's capabilities for the most part.3) RE: 4G. Sprint is the only one with 4G access right now. Apple will release an LTE version of this phone when they are partnered with a network that supports it. To unveil a 4G phone right now is silly.

Interesting. If you like the iPhone already (and I know you do) then I imagine these features are significant upgrades and will be much appreciated and used. And if you're on ATT and don't mind the service then I'm sure its a good day. But the expectation has been for Apple to change the game every summer, leaving the competition in its path. I imagine Dan Hesse is probably pretty happy right about now considering Apple (1) didn't expand its potentiatl customer base and (2) can't boast about having the fastest phone.

Backflips? The iPhone will destroy the EVO in sales.

Of course it well sell more then the EVO. But the idea is that it isn't "better" enough to kill it (and Sprint) in its tracks like the Palm Pre disaster almost did. APple is going to sell a ton of these things. And they'll sell a ton of the one they announce next June and so forth. The EVO, new BB's, and a variety of other new devices are all feeling a lot better today; the "OMG I HAVE TO HAVE AN IPHONE!" wave isn't going to materialize any more then normal after today.

I can barely edit video on a machine with 24 inch monitor and a precision mouse - I'm sure I would love to do this on a 3.5 inch screen and the not so pretty fat finger I have. I suppose if you are in a hurry it would be a nice to have but I can see it having limited practicality.

I didn't hear any quotes about speed but going from WiFi g to WiFi n is a big jump in functional speed and many of us are often using this thing in a WiFi network.

That's not the way Jobs runs apple. He has a vision of your computer and technology experience. Buy into it and you have a well intregrated system that plays well together and "just works" but there's not a lot of room for personalization.

This isn't intended to be used for high end editing. This is for quick editing for YouTube type clips. For serious editing you're still going to want to use a workstation/MacBookPro. That said.. I can imagine tons of scenarios where some basic video editing on the fly would be awesome to have.

Agreed 100%. I'm simply saying that I don't think the wave of people leaving other carriers to get an iPhone on ATT is going to increase in size based on today. Nothing wrong with that - they'll keep selling a ton of these.

I tend to agree though since I'm locked into ATT until late 2010 on a 3G phone, this ends up being a no-brainer upgrade. At this point without 4G it has all the bells and whistles necessary. All these phone/software developers are all going to hung up by the lack of bandwidth from the cell phone companies for awhile now.

That is when you'll get your VZW iPhone. Not before IMO.

I'm interested in customer-net-gains, not in total sales. People with an iPhone that's more then a year old will likely upgrade, which is great for Apple and ATT. What I'm saying (and have been saying) is that the announced items don't seem like enough to compel a greater tidal wave of new ATT/iPhone owners.

I really, really wanted an iphone 4. I've held off on buying an EVO to wait for today. I currently have a Droid and an ipod touch. The wide variety of apps available is why I love my ipod. I'm a huge Android fan and their app store isn't there yet. I was hoping to get an iphone so I could ditch my touch.

I hate itunes. I hate the closed nature of the iphone OS, but I understand why it is the way it is and I can get around it. AT&T flat out sucks in LA/OC. I get zero service in my office building and reception only by windows at home. I was seriously thinking of buying $400 worth of AT&T microcells for home and work if I got the iphone, this is how bad I wanted it. Sprint of all carriers is better than ATT here and I can't believe it. This is the only time I wish I didn't live in LA.

The iphone seems to have a 2 year upgrade cycle. The iphone 3GS wasn't really worth upgrading from a 3G. The 4 is worth it (note to self, wait for iphone 6, on verizon). Even tho the 4 has some great new features, I think Android has closed the gap. The EVO stole a lot of thunder (for impartial consumers). The upcoming Motorola Shadow/Xtreme will be on par with the EVO and new iphone (720p video, 4.3" screen, etc.). The Android phones coming from HTC/Motorola/Samsung this fall will be better than the EVO/Xtreme/iphone in terms of hardware.

The iphone 4 will still sell like hotcakes. The app store will still be awesome. The iphone is no longer head and shoulders above any other smartphone tho.

Now I'm eagerly awaiting the announcement of the ipod touch 4 this September to use with my EVO.

I tend to agree with you. I'm hoping by the time my 2 year contract runs out (re-up'd January 2010), there will be an iPhone offering on Verizon. Then I will really be able to make a solid choice between iPhone and whatever Android phone is hot at that time.

Prepare to be shocked. Between the publicity (negative) on the data caps, the fact that a lot of folks already don't like ATT, and the slew of amazing phones out there or coming to market before summer's end, I would be surprised if the net gains in new customers going to iPhones from other networks improves at all.

Both verizon and AT&T are in the process of upgrading their equipment to 4g, I know verizon has done a lot in Texas/Midwest.

People say to choose the carrier before you choose the phone, but this is one time I wanted to ignore it. I was hoping Steve would pull a couple rabbits out of his hat today but everything he announced was in line to what was leaked. I really dig the new resolution/dpi on the screen, but other than that, there's nothing really compelling that the iphone has that the EVO doesn't.My main issue is with ATT. If the EVO didn't exist, I'd probably suck it up.

Yes you can, if you root your phone, which is very easy. I currently tether my touch to my Droid (and my Windows Mobile phones). I've told everyone buying an EVO not to pay for the wifi hotspot since it would absolutely be available for free with root. Between the publicity (negative) on the data caps, the fact that a lot of folks already don't like ATT, and the slew of amazing phones out there or coming to market before summer's end, I would be surprised if the net gains in new customers going to iPhones from other networks improves at all.

As soon as Apple puts out its first iPhone video chat commercial people will be running (quicker than normal) to ATT.

I imagine the Sprint will start running some EVO ads featuring specific features pretty soon as well, including video chat.

I'm not so sure. I'm pretty impressed with the new iPhone, but I'm still leaning toward getting an EVO. Sprint's plans are better than AT&T and I'm not sure that the iPhone is that much better than the EVO. An iPhone on Sprint or Verizon would have sold me. I'm just not convinced that moving to AT&T is a good idea.And I'm a guy who already has a MacBook Pro and an iPod touch.
