The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

Those of you with a 3GS, has it been long enough for you to upgrade? I came so close to getting a 3GS, but someone told me that another version was comming out in like 6 months and to just wait, and low and behold here we are with the iPhone 4. Getting a 3GS would have been so dumb, now that I think about it, most of the new features were on the software update anyway.

Anywho, I predict that June 24 will be a lot like when the 3G came out. There were people who camped outside of the AT&T store just to get it. When it opened, there was already a huge line that went out of the store and curled around the side of the building. All the three AT&T stores in town were sold out before noon, and there isn't an Apple store in my area, so I had another week or so. I just wanna get one before I go off to college in August, surely all the hype will have died down by then.

And for the multitasking feature, is it possible for me to be on YouTube and check my email or be on safari? Or does it only work with apps?

So how do you do the "reboot" that wipes your hard drive essentially on iTunes?

Should you remove your sim card prior?

Should you delete all your apps from the phone prior, or is that unnecessary?

I want to make sure there is no data of mine on the phone when I trade it in or sell it.

I got the 3Gs the day it came out and I'm eligible for an upgrade. With the Radio Shack trade-in or the ability to sell the 3Gs on eBay, I can get the iPhone4 for $0-$50 total (plus a new 2 year contract, which I think is the main scam here if this is available on Verizon next year . . . but I guess selling or trading the iPhone4 next year will pay for early termination).

600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders in one day. :lmao:
Must be nice to sell nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in product in 12 hours.
How much are they getting for these things? I thought it was $199??
$199/$299 is a subsidized price. ATT is kicking some cash ($200 was the amount with previous iPhones) in as well. The non subsidized price is about $600 IIRC.

FIgure the amount they're getting for each is somewhere in the middle.

Hookup to iTunes, "restore", but synch it before you restore to save all your stuff.

Should you remove your sim card prior?

I would. When you activate your new phone, your old sim is deactivated and cleared of your phone number and cannot be used until it's reactivated with a new number. But every IT guy I talk to says to remove it before selling.

Should you delete all your apps from the phone prior, or is that unnecessary?

"restore" from iTunes will do this, but you can also go to "settings">"general">"reset" on your current phone to delete as well.

I want to make sure there is no data of mine on the phone when I trade it in or sell it.

Thanks!I'm 100% removing the sim before I sell. Should I prior to the "restore" or does that not matter?

Apple randomly canceling some iPhone pre-orders?

By Nilay Patel posted Jun 19th 2010 at 10:38PM

We haven't verified exactly what's going on here, but we've gotten several tips tonight from people who've received an iPhone 4 pre-order cancellation email from Apple saying that their order couldn't be authorized. That sounds like an AT&T authorization problem to us, and given the the litany of problems that Apple and AT&T had all week dealing with the huge number of pre-orders, we can't say we're too surprised to hear that the chaos continues. Here's the email:

Dear Customer,

We were unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone

order. As a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order. To complete the

purchase of your iPhone, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T

company-owned retail store.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Apple Online Store Team

Anyone know of a place to buy a case for the iphone 4 yet? I've looked at some site but they all saying "coming soon".
I think I'm going to put this new glass to the test and not get a case this time. The case on my 3G all but kills the 'thin' nature of it, so I'm going to see if this new glass is as tough as they are saying.

Has anyone commented on whether or not the "reservations" to pick up the iPhone at an Apple store on the 24th are actually guaranteed? If I show up an hour before the store closes with my reservation, am I guaranteed a phone on that day?

Another question for the FBG collective. I have read that AT&T was going to force those of us who want to move to the iPhone 4G (currently a 3G user) to switch over to one of the new data plans as well as extend the contract another 2 years. I am somewhat okay with the contract extension, but not the data plan switch. I use it around 4GB a month (see previous post) and currently my $30 plan would cost $45 on average after the switch. I have also read that this is for new AT&T customers only and my plan should be okay as is. My preference is for my voice and data plan to remain exactly the same. Can anyone shed some light on this subject. I am trying to make an informed decision on whether or not to upgrade, but AT&T sure doesn't make it easy. TIA.

My understanding is that if (and only if) you currently have the $30/mo. unlimited data plan on your existing iPhone, you can keep it when you upgrade rather than switching to the $15 (200MB) or $25 (2GB) plans. New iPhone customers will not have the option to go unlimited and will have to choose between the new plans. How long that plan will continue to exist is an open question, and I expect that there is language in the contract that will allow AT&T to cancel it at any time in the future (not just at contract renewal time) and force you to choose one of the others. That's just a guess, though. I plan on holding on to the unlimited plan as long as I'm able to. But I'm sure AT&T will move to kill it off as soon as they practically can. Verizon has also recently hinted that they will be moving to capped and tiered data plans for all their phones. At this point, the only thing that may interfere with AT&T's strategy is if AT&T loses the iPhone exclusive and another carrier enters the fray offering an unlimited data plan with their iPhone. That would also remove a crapload of traffic off AT&T's mobile data network and spread the load out, so I look forward to that happening. The only downside I have heard to keeping the unlimited plan (apart from the cost) is that you will not be allowed to purchase AT&T's tethering option without downgrading to the 2GB plan and then paying another $20 per month for the privilege of officially sanctioned tethering.

Current $30/month unlimited customers are grandfathered in and will not be forced to lose that plan. When I pre-ordered my iphone4, the 2 year contract extension summary stated $30/month, unlimited data. We're safe, for now...

Thanks folks. Tethering is not really something I am interested in, but I can assure you I will jailbreak the 4.0 as soon as I can just as I have done with my 3G. If I ever need tethering (big if) I will go the unsanctioned route. I did it once and worked fine. I am eligible for the upgrade, but since they are sold out and no jailbreak is available (past 3.1.3), I will be sitting back and seeing what unfolds for a little while.

I've had a 1st Gen iPhone for 3 years now and it hasn't been in a case of any kind for the last year-and-a-half and it has survived just fine. I also got sick of what felt like doubling the size of my phone with a case, so I dumped it and haven't looked back. When I finally do get a 4G, I don't plan on buying a case for that either.

Here is some info for the people who ordered from the AT&T website. Hopes to give some information of when the orders will be shipped.

Explanation of the AT&T Order Status Screen I posted this at the end of another thread last week - but I think it might be worth reposting here: I spoke to an old college buddy last week. He works as an operational manager at the AT&T Wireless Central Distribution Center outside of Arlington, TX - and he said that this whole thing was (obviously) a nightmare and he was in the office for 48 straight hours. He explained the vague terminology of the AT&T status system. Apparently there is no stock in the CDC right now, but Apple is (and has been) transmitting databases of S/N's in batches of 35,000 to AT&T. He said Apple is the only hardware vendor that operates this way prior to a launch. They wait until the last possible minute to hand the hardware over to AT&T in order to prevent early leaks. When your status reads "PROCESSING" without the "BACKORDER" flag, it means that your order number has been married to an iPhone S/N, it will be shipped in the first batch, and you will likely receive it on the 24th. If it does have the "BACKORDER" flag, it means that they received the order, and they anticipate enough stock for the 2nd or 3rd wave, but they have not paired your order number to the S/N of a phone (and this is changing day to day as they wade though the system) - so if it says BACKORDER now, it might not next week prior to the fulfillment launch. If you have an ALERT flag (which looks like a red exclamation point) that's bad. It means that they oversold their anticipated stock (since automation went down several times they were processing some orders by hand in stores) and you might not get your phone until July. The long and short of it seems to be, if it says PROCESSING you're going to get the phone on launch day. If it has the BACKORDER flag, it MIGHT come on launch day (or the flag might clear between now and the 23rd) and if you have the ALERT, you're out of luck. He also said there were thousands of duplicate orders - so right now a lot of the confusion comes from matching up the right capacity phone (16 or 32) to the right order. This is apparently being done by hand - so anything can happen to any order. Hope this helps shed some light. Take it for what its worth .

As a sidenote to all the iPhone 4 hoopla, tomorrow is the ios4 update. That's right folks....FOLDERS!!!!!!
Stupid right? And MULTITASKING too!! Evo already has multitasking (you just need to disable that, and set the volume and brightness on the lowest levels, and disable a bunch of other stuff to get more than 2 hours battery life). AWESOME!!11117

Just a thought for those selling their 3G phones on eBay, you might want to wait for your new phone and not update to iOS 4 since there is no jailbreak for it yet. Leaving the old version could up the value.

 Again, why do you care about the Evo or any criticism of an iPhone you say you don't even have?

My programmers just told me we've had the iOS 4 Gold Master in house for over two weeks and they could have put it on my phone any time. Seriously, WTF? This seems like the kind of information I should know about. :whoosh:

Today seems like a good day to fire someone.

I've been reading forums on apple.com and am seeing a lot of people having problems with iTunes 9.2. Anyone here have any problems yet? I haven't installed it yet.
