The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

Can someone give me a quick pros and cons on jailbreaking? Just got m iphone, and I'm on my FIL's plan. If this voids my warranty, I'm very hesitant unless there are major advantages.

What say ye?

Any iPhone 5 rumors out there? Worry that there may not be one due to lack of Japanese components? Also, should we worry about radiation from components made in Japan once production does begin?

I could be wrong, but I think the mobile hotspot feature of this OS does that, no?
iPhone 3G user here...
Jailbreak+mywi = $3g is an easy break too.

Funny to look back to post 1 in this thread, when a phone from Apple was first rumored. Amazing how it has transformed mobile telephony in about 4 years.

:goodposting: I use my jailbroken iPhone 4's (jailbroken on 4.0 OS I believe) 3G connection, which is still on the now grandfathered unlimited data plan from AT&T, exclusively for my laptop's internet connection. This frees up my crappy DSL connection to be used freely for gaming. This alone makes jailbreaking worth it, but you can also use JB apps like Installous to get games/apps for free.

One of the coolest apps is UnlimTones, which has virtually every ringtone imagineable (in my case, the

.. there's some seriously obscure stuff on there), downloadable instantly to your phone OTA and available right there in Settings after download. Some people make jailbreaking sound like a risky process, but if your firmware and hardware versions match up, and you can follow directions, you really shouldn't have any trouble following one of the guides out there for jailbreaking.

Thought the same thing when I clicked to look at a new post and saw the original one, dating back to 2007. "Internet communications device" sounds like something a caveman would say anymore.

At that point, we basically had the e-mail-only Blackberry and the nokia phone? Flip phones? God phones sucked then. The iPhone spawned the Android phones and real, useful internet through your phone. And apps were a serious development too. Quite a leap we've made.

Yeah, I really don't understand how Blackberrys have the marketshare they do. I guess they're good for work since they're boring and not very enjoyable to use.

They're great for work. I love my iPhone but that keyboard drives me bananas. I type so fast on my Bberry.

I-phone 4 noob here. Love It! Seriously life changing tool but I'm still working out the basics.

Looked throught he users guide and did not find the answer to this:

I receive a text during a voice call, the incoming text tone drowns out the conversation. How do I shut the tone off while talking?

TIA!!

You may want to jailbreak and use Bite SMS instead of the default text messaging client. I realize it's a huge beating that all the problems with the phone apple refuses to fix, but you have to take matters into your own hands sometimes.

I know this has been answered already but I dont feel like looking it up

I am getting my wife an iphone for mothers day. How friendly is itunes with two phones connected

Also, can I put apps that I bought for me onto her phone

yes. 5 connected devices to one acct is ok.
Actually you can connect an unlimited amount of devices to 1 itunes account. We have 2 iphones, 3 ipods, 3 ipads all tied to 1 account. Buy an app once, use it on all of them. You can only authorize 5 computers to share 1 itunes account.

What's everyone hearing about the release date for the iPhone 5?

I am due for an upgrade for my phone (I have a blackberry now for Verizon), and I want an iPhone, but I don't want to get one in April and have a newer one come out in June/July.

I read somethings that said they don't expect the iPhone 5 to come out until the end of this year. Anyone have any other info or advice on waiting it out vs. upgrading to it right now? What is supposed to be added to the iPhone 5 that the current iPhone doesn't have?

There are rumors that the design will change and revert back to the rounded back portion of the body. Rumors also of a capacitive home button instead of am actul button. My guess is that the 5 won't be out til fall.

Why would they remove internal storage?

That's pretty unlikely. They are making a huge assumption that everyone has access to the network at all times. Lots of this crap on there is just people making #### up.The next big thing is when Iphone goes LTE. The amount of market share they lose when VZW LTE phones hit the market in volume will be very telling. It will be the 5GS or 6 at the earliest with that level of support. I don't think the 5 will have any huge features that will be worth an upgrade from 4.

How about from 3GS (with iOS4) to 5?

Yeah, I'm sure that's the main upgrade target. The bulk of the 4s will still be less than a year old in December.

So i grabbed a free ibook via my iphone on the ibooks app. Now, how do I save this to my itunes library, or is this not possible for some odd reason?
When you sync it should save the book under the "Books" section in iTunes. This way you manage which books you have on your device while keeping your full library on your main computer, like you would for music, movies... etc.

I sync my music manually though and it said I would lose all my info on my phone or something. I feel like I am blindly missing a step somewhere.

Yeah, it should automatically copy over to your iTunes library then. Just like when you download an app on the iPhone, it copies the app over to the computer.

Figured it out. I had to go to "transfer purchases from iPhone" under the file menu. Unrelated iPod/iTunes question; if I buy music on my work computer, when I go to my home computer and log it, will the music automatically download there as well, or do I have to do an iPod or external hard-drive transfer? Both are "authorized computers"

Now that the white iPhone is out, my wife FINALLY decided to take advantage of her "upgrade every two years" promotion with Verizon (that is almost 2 years overdue) so I ordered her one today. She is making a huge jump from this relic to something that she can actually use. The battery had about a 30 minute life (so now it's doubled with the iPhone! :excited: ) and was a pain to text with. Now that she is in the 21st century, maybe she'll answer her phone now when I call.

I'm starting to have some issues with my iPhone4 that I bought last year. Sometimes it takes me pressing the "home" button 5 or more times to close a screen or to turn on the display etc. It also seems that my battery isn't holding a charge quite as long. I do have Apple Care . . . will they replace the phone or take it from me and try to fix it?

How long does your battery last? I am "having" to recharge it every couple of days if I want it to stay higher percentage. I may let it get to 30% but find that odd.I also have some Home button pressing a couple of times every now and than. Also, some apps shut down as well. I figure the apps shutting down might be due to WiFi connection though.

I'm having a similar home button problem too. As soon as I schedule a Genius Bar appointment though, the problem seems to go away so I cancel the appointment only to have it return a week or two later. I guess I should just run with the next appointment regardless. Is there a 1-year warranty on iPhone 4's?

Same issues with some apps as well, but I just assumed those were problems with the app or iOs that would be corrected with updates. Maybe not?It just seems like I am using the phone the same amount as I always have, but throughout the day it's losing more juice than before. I plug mine in almost every night. If I don't I'm <20 by night 2.
