The Apple iPhone Thread (4 Viewers)

I'm hoping they get the battery drain squared away... I run a battery case on my 5 as it is and generally burn through the case and most of the phone's battery in a typical day.
That's a lot of pr0n you're watching there GB...

By the way, is the iPhone 5 way worse at battery life than the 4S? I seem to remember charging every other day, but now even with a day with few calls, it seems like I burn through most of the battery where I am lucky if I don't have to charge it overnight, every night. It's been, obviously, less than a year and I am trying to figure out if it is worth a visit to the Apple Store because the battery life seems way worse than when I first got it and I really don't use it a ton.

Any recommendations on where to get a cheap yet reliable 30-pin to lightning adapter? Not a wired one, just the little adapter.
http://www.fasttech.com/products/1310/10000461/1048901-lightning-8-pin-to-30-pin-adapter-for-apple-idevic

Someone posted a link to this place earlier in the thread. I bought a wired adapter and a handful of cables. They have all worked great and you can;t beat the price.
Thanks! This part kind of stinks though, so I may have to keep looking:

  • Will charge and sync with cables and docks, but does not work on most audio docks and speakers.

I think you are going to run into that problem eveywhere. Even the official Apple adapter is reported to not work with a number of audio products.

So my wife had an iP4 and yesterday I got her and my daughter iP5's.

At the Sprint store they added contacts from each old phone to the new phone. But what they also did was had both new phones share contacts. Which meant that when my daughter started deleting out her mom's contact from her phone, it also deleted them from mom's phone.

Unfortunately, we'd never backed up the old iP4 to iTunes...so all those contacts are lost.

I'm not sure I like cloud based computing.

Moral of the story - be sure to back up your contacts. I think that's the moral anyway...

One thing I hope they change is the volume of the voice on maps. I have it on the loudest setting and its still much quieter than the music when connected via bluetooth to my auto's audio system.

What kind of idiot (Sprint store guy) turns on the "share contacts" setting between a device for a kid and a device for a mom?

Alright...not being much of an Apple guy...but my wife likes her iPhone and iPad...I have a few questions.

We now have 5 devices (ipod nano, iPad2, iPhone4s, iPad mini, and wife will have her iPhone 5 for work this week).

I know I can put all 5 on one account...but we are setting up an apple ID for her (first one was mine as I had the iPod first).

She would like to keep her iPhone5 and the iPad mini on the new ID and separate from the other 3 (yes, we know we can turn off a lot of the sharing things...but she is already pissed that so much of what my kids do on the iPad ends up on her phone...more of a story of them messing with the settings after I had them set up for her nicely).

Is it best to do it with 2 IDs? Or just more of a pain?

Anyway to then still sync over some music I already have in iTunes to her iPad as she is about to head to India for work and would like some music on her new iPad?

If I can't...its no problem as so much of the music she wanted was from CDs that I have ripped on the computer already and can add through iTunes on her Apple ID if I need to.

I thought match downloads and overwrites music....my phone is always full with 14G of music....how do I free up this space?

Personally, I have way more than that all on one ID. I wouldn't ever want to split IDs because you pay more, i.e. every app that you want on both IDs you pay for twice. That said, if your wife just wants music and her apps are all free/no one else uses then having two IDs might be worth the pain (can't get rid of the wife ;) ).

Also, if you aren't as familiar, I think you could solve this easily. When you setup her iPhone, you probably didn't realize you have it setup to sync new stuff automatically. This would mean that everything anyone downloads on their device using that ID is added to her iPhone automatically on sync (or even downloaded via the cloud). On iTunes when you sync the iPhone and you are on the Apps tab, make sure the "Automatically sync new apps" option is unchecked. Once you do that anything done on the iPad will not affect her iPhone. If you do that, I think your wife will be cool and you will be happier knowing you don't have to load music/apps/movies onto two different IDs, which I think means two different iTunes instances. Not sure on the last part, maybe iTunes is much better for multiple IDs now, but I kept admonishing my wife for installing iTunes on her laptop with another ID and finally got her to realize that I will handle her syncing, etc. She just downloads new music/apps on her iPhone directly and I sync her iPhone occasionally to back it up and change movies if she is travelling.

Settings -> General -> Usage -> Swipe Left to right on Music so the Delete button comes up and hit delete. This will clear all the local files cached.

How does this work for other apps. For example, Spotify, the app size is 42.6MB, but I have 355MB in data. How do I get rid of the data?

I have had a little practice deleting things to make room for other things, but I don't recall ever seeing an option to remove just the data. Best way might be to delete the app and then reinstall it. Sort of a pain, but on Wifi, probably pretty quick.

We are thinking of putting the Mini still on my ID...then putting her new work phone on her own ID. Basically, we know she won't be using those other apps on her work phone or even music.

Its pretty much used to check and filter work emails and not much else.

I just have to be better about segregating what gets put on each iPad and her other iPhone.

You can check and uncheck which numbers each device uses to receive/send messages

Agreed, it can be done pretty easily. I don't recall the exact setting, but all my phones have text messages going to the phone number, which is obviously unique. We really don't do much facetime at all, but even with that you can set it all up to do it with the phone number or even an email address. You don't have to have everything setup to the apple ID. The apple ID is the same on every device I have.

If the phone is at 0% battery and you plug it in, it takes a minute or two to charge enough to turn it on. Patience.Chalk this one up to user error.

Just got an iPhone5 after the price drop, really enjoying it. My wife has the Droid Razor MAX HD and loves it.

The iPhone5 is very slim and the keyboard is smaller (turn it sideways it works better).

Yesterday to celebrate the anniversary of the app store Apple had tons of apps for free - I downloaded several.

Went yesterday to the store because my lock button wasn't working. I also had a big dent on it so I was hoping they'd trade it out. Success! New phone, awesome.

However when I restored I didn't get any of my apps or folders back (nothing paid for, but it took some time to download and organize everything.). And now my two gmail accounts won't work with exchange which means I don't have my email or contacts, which sucks. So I'm going back to the store at 3 for help.

So it turns out gmail changed some things in the last four or five months to make setting up gmail as exchange on iOS a pain. So I got a new phone but now my email has to work differently.

Have you just tried the GMail App for iOS? By all reports, it is one of the best mail clients available.

Yes. I have that too and use it for searching and Stuff. But I have non gmail email too so I prefer the apple app.

went to the apple store and let a genius look at the phone. they took it apart couldnt figure out what happend. guy said hes never seen one do this unless there was water damage. all in all i had a new phone and he extended my warranty by 5 months.. not bad

only crappy part was i havnt backed up my stuff since i got my phone back in november so i lost alot of photos and some contacts

My 3g and my wife's 3gs were handed down to 2 of my kids to use as iPod Touches a while back. My daughter had the 3gs fall out of a pocket on the tile and cracked up the screen. It was very rewarding to fix it myself and it's as good as new.

I had seen a blurb on icracked.com and ordered a kit. Even found an online code for 5% off. Came to like $31.00. Great deal.

You know what the app store doesn't have that someone could sell a ton of? An app that does your pool calculations for you and tracks it over time, plus chemicals used so you know when to restock. None of the ones you can get are worth even downloading for free right now. Put a decent one up and for sure you have a hit, even a small one.
I hadn't been in this thread in a long time, and this was the second new post. Oddly enough I was just looking for a pool app like that a few days ago. The one from poolcalculator.com looked disappointing. Have you found anything good?

Not really. There are some for android that work well and track some items, but mostly the test parameters and not what you put in.

Highly recommend having everyone on one account, especially if you have kids.
I might have the kids on one account, and you on another...that way you can watch what they have, but they do not have what you have, especially things like calendar and contacts. :2cents:

All my Safari bookmarks just disappeared today, and I can't add new bookmarks. Any thoughts?

Also, when is the new phone coming out, I'm ready to upgrade but am getting tired of waiting (I have a 4S).

The latest rumors are the "5S" has been pushed back past the original Sep/Oct date to change the screen size...

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-07-17/apple-may-delay-introduction-of-iphone-5s-commercial-times-says.html

... which seems like a completely bizarre rumor but if the rumors that the retina-display-ipad-mini won't launch until after the holidays then anything might be true. Also, they supposedly went on a recent hiring spree to work on the iwatch that everyone thought was just around the corner...
