The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

ipad + android phone FTW.

I used to be android pad + iphone.

This setup is a major step forward.
Not to hijack, but I got an iPad for the family for Christmas last year. I'm still trying to figure out an effective use for it other than the kids and wife playing games on it.

That's what mine gets used for 90% of the time. The other 10% is when I wake up early on a Saturday or Sunday and I use it to browse the web, read Time Magazine, or look at the Chive app. I like my IPad but it's a first gen and I can't see any reason to upgrade and I probably owuldn't notice if I didn't have it at all.

My ipad has basically turned my laptop into something that just hangs out on the counter. I didnt think I needed one, but I got it for my birthday. There is not much to do on it besides web, games and Internet but it is a lot easier surfing the ipad than the laptop.

My kids also love watching netflix on it so that makes it worth it to me

Culdeus,

You dont miss having the ipad and iphone synched together? How do you deal with the media you have on each (music, movies etc)

interested here also.

My house is set up like this:

Me: iphone 5, Ipad 3, Ipad mini, Apple TV, ipod touch

Wife: Iphone 4s, ipad 2

Kid: Iphone 4

all the devices are jailbroken and work well together. My only complaint in this whole setup is that I want a bigger screen on my phone. I'd consider a Galaxy for this purpose, but am leery.

when you can sell your old iphone to gazelle for $200 or so and get the new phone for the same price or slightly more, upgrading seems like a no-brainer to me. I already have a 5 so don't have a need, but my wife is upgrading her 4s this way. never cared about the contract as I'm not planning to switch carriers or upgrade more than once every 2 years anyway.

As a guy whose 1999 4Runner just passed a smog test (2 more years!), I certainly understand getting long term value from purchases. But I don't think it's completely honest to say that you "can't see any reason to upgrade" from a 1st generation iPad to one of the new ones. I have both and the first one is a dinosaur compared to the new ones.

I don't watch movies on my phone, or listen to music on my ipad. I use picasa for photo storage/uploads.

I just don't use it for anything where I would notice a difference. I wouldn't use it for pictures of facetime and it runs quickly enough for video and games and web.

Well, what's the reason then? Why is the first one a dinosaur? I have an iPad 2 that does a great job of being a Netflix / hbo / casual web surfing machine, and I have trouble imagining how any of the latest iterations would materially improve my experience.

The retina display of the newer ipads is great for readability. The trade off is the retina ipads are much heavier due to the larger battery required. Worth it for me.

I hate the retina Ipads. Ipad 2 is the best iteration to date imo. The subsequent ones are too heavy to hold comfortably. This is where the mini becomes a great fit.

I read it, then had an embolism.

Free advice: discounts on phones that require a contract make the company offering the discount a ton of money. Contracts rarely work in your favor.

ok then.

I'm on a family plan so my phone and data plan through AT&T costs me about $40/month. contract really doesn't bother me at all.

thanks for the free advice though.

For weight, screen resolution, battery life, functionality, and price, its hard to beat the new Nexus 7.

You're on your parents plan? If you're only giving them $40 a month, then you've got a deal I guess. Stick with it.

I've played with those in the Apple Store, and while nice, it's not something that would have a big impact on my enjoyment of the device. I don't think it's dishonest at all for Abe or anyone else to say that there's no real reason for users of the older models to upgrade.

I do the same thing, but mine is $45/Mo. ($90/Mo. for Mrs One and I).

Here I thought I had the best deal in town.

$90 for what? How many minutes/texts/data?

If you are really hard up to get ios7 all gold masters have leaked to torrent sites now and most are saying they are legit. Just check the hash before installing and don't try to sue me if you brick your device kthksbye.

I guess I'll be upgrading to the 5s after checking out other platforms.

Really like the Nokia 1020 , played with it at a MS store and was impressed.Nice hardware , GREAT camera & photo suite , OS seem fun . I'm just leery of mobile windows platform staying almost niche-like as it is today. Still tempted

I like Android but not happy about the way the updates are handled although the HTC One looks & feels awesome

I'm curious which Android features you feel like you're missing because of the way updates are handled? I ask because most android users seem generally concerned if they don't have the latest version of Android... yet they can't tell me what they're missing by not having the latest version.

Plus, I hear a lot of iOS users that aren't happy when they first upgrade to the latest version of the OS. And have met plenty of windows users who swear they'll avoid Windows 8 like the plague and refuse to upgrade from a Windows 7 computer. I think we can all think of instances when the "newest" OS isn't necessarily the best OS.

People have a weird relationship with their operating systems. Whenever I purchase a device I know the OS that's on it and whether that OS is good or not is a factor when making the purchase. If two new operating systems are released after my purchase..... the device and "old" OS don't lose any functionality from the day I bought it.

BTW, I know you are into photography and think you should buy the Nokia 1020. Not based on what mobile windows may turn into. Not based on what apps may migrate to that system in the future. But instead based on the enjoyment you'll get from using that camera now. Today. But I'm a little biased in that I like the current mobile windows OS. I don't really care if a phone supports 50,000 apps or not. It's rare I use more than 9 apps in a given week.

Love the mini.

Have actually been...gasp...reading books and enjoying it on the thing.

Ended up actually checking out a few books for me while at the public library for the kids...and hate reading an actual book compared to reading on on the iPad (or other device).

Someone stole my wife's iphone yesterday(presumably one of her students)

Anyway the find my iphone app is awesome, just make sure location services are left on :wall:

Either way it's nice to be able to remotely wipe her data

i0s7 is supposed to have better security for stolen iphones.

I think I'm just going to upgrade from 3GS to 5. Best Buy still has them at $99.99. My wife might do the 5C. That shade of blue is a favorite color of hers. Whatever she goes with, definite upgrade over her 3G (that's right, 3G, not 3GS).

I just swapped my launch day 5 for another one because my sleep button wasn't functioning properly. I had 20 days left on my warranty. New hardware plus iOS7 next week = new phone for me.

That's what I did with mine about a month ago. The original had a huge dent on the side but they didn't care - swapped it out without question.

My wife just upgraded from my old 3GS to the 5. I'm still using the 4S and have no plans or desire to get the new 5S. Holding out hope that the 6 will be worth the wait.

Going Space Gray 5S (or Gold, not sure) online order next Thursday at Midnight. Excited for the new phone and iOS7. :towelwave:

I'd pre-order the gold 5S if I was eligible, but looks like I'll have to wait until next fall when my 2 yr K is up.
Contract is up beginning of October. Will be updating from 4s to 5s.

No 4G on my phone is big reason, none of the new features are the reason I'm upgrading.
4S is 4G capable, right? Mine is on 4G.
Don't think so... not on ATT anyway...
