The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

It’s convenient how all your phones broke like this past week. Everyone suddenly starts having trouble with their old iPhones the week the new one comes out. I imagine you guys looking left, looking right, and then dropping your phone on the concrete.  Repeatedly.
Both my wife and my 6 were paid off in July and sure enough, both started doing weird things. Mine was resolved with an IOS update but my wife's phone became possessed. You would see it on the table begin to open apps by itself or it would initiate texts to people in her contacts list (luckily not sending). The final straw is the passcode screen began to lock and she couldn't answer her phone.

i got her an 8 because she didn't want to wait for a 10

I remember being like that in 1981 and just having to have the newest Intellivision games that were released, like Astro-Smash. I would call the tv repair shop on release day to make sure they had the latest game and insisted Momma Batts take me to get it immediately after school. Those were the days.

Mrs. Batts is like that now with Apple products. Sometimes I wish it was still 1981.

You have strange fantasies. :)

my battery has been in decline for about 6-8mo now and the switch has been acting up for about as long but a dousing with beer 2mo ago accelerated its decline. Very glad the X is waterproof.

Some of us do subject our phones to outdoorsy stuff and conditions outside of office desk > pocket > coffee table > pocket > office desk :)

My iPhone 6S is in nearly perfect condition, as it was when I got my iPhone 7 Plus 8 months ago.

My iPhone 7 Plus is in nearly perfect condition, as it was on Friday morning when I ordered my iPhone X.

My obsession is with having fun, enjoying life and since I can easily afford it why not?

I know some people might look down on me for getting the latest gadgets; cameras, phones, TVs, ... but I enjoy it because I can.  And that's what matters.

I have no problem getting the latest and greatest gadget. I plan to get the X when they have plenty in stock and a get to hear some reviews.

What I don’t understand is the stress people put themselves through to get a phone.

Oh, I can't answer to that.  It wasn't stressful at all.

Exactly. My question isn’t about why you want the X. I also want the X. But I can’t see myself setting an alarm for 3am or waiting in line to get it a few weeks early. Why not just wait a month or two?

The only upside I can see is being the guy on the subway who everyone envies for like a month. At which point everybody will have it and nobody will care anymore.

Perhaps this is all they will ever have in life. Cut them some slack.

And I'm still running with my handed-down iphone 5s.  :bag:

It really wasn't a big deal to wake up at 2:45AM order a phone an go back to bed.  I woke up in the middle of the night for stupid work stuff quite often, so doing it for something I want is a pretty easy decision.

Waiting isn't that big of a deal either, though.

I'm still making payments on my wife

Again, it's human nature. We want things and don't want to have to wait. Let's say my kid really wanted a video game and asked me to buy it for him. And let's say I told him he could wait until Christmas and get it under the tree, OR he could clean up the playroom and I'd buy to for him this weekend. I can assure you that the playroom would be spotless. For better or worse, that childlike desire for immediate gratification doesn't necessarily die when you become an adult. It's not really logical, nor is it an example of mature decision-making. It is a function of desire and enthusiasm.

Lol that you think the only upside to getting the phone ASAP is so that strangers envy you! How do you consider THAT as upside, let alone the only upside you can think of? Think about it.

Maybe they did, but not sure they are all stressing about it.
Exactly. Thrill of the hunt.

Saw on Reddit that the screen replacement on the x is going to cost $279?! :X
Posted this earlier. Common with the type of OLED screen we are talking about here. Going to miss my $40 IPhone 6 screen swaps but the Z screen is a different animal.

And here. Some of us use our phones a lot, they’re on their last leg because we don’t upgrade often, and we generally buy  on major tech advances to future proof as much as possible since we don’t upgrade often.

What’s the big deal about setting an alarm for 3am? It was literally like a 5 minute process. Set alarm for 2:58, checked-out by 3:02, back sleeping by 3:03. Done deal.

Okay... looks like these are the capped charging speeds

Qi wireless : 7.5W

USB2 to Lightning : 29W

just make sure your charger is at least that level to take advantage of Quick charging.

I got the 7 plus in January.  :bag:

I should have waited, my 6 plus was fine. Now I'm stuck with this for another year at least.

Anyone know what AT&T is offering for a 128 Gig 7 plus?

I ordered an X through my firm.  Didn’t even realize that my 6s plan (also through the firm) was up and I could upgrade.  Cool that I get a new phone but dont really care when I get it.  This 6s works great.  Never had a problem with it other than the slow decline of battery life.  But I’m sure that will be the case on the X too.

I wonder why, with the iPhone X 3-d sensors, and the technology built in to animate emoji, can it not do a 3-d rendering of your face and pair it with various camera shots of your face, and create your own, virtualized, talking head that you can speak and it'll have your head saying and using expressions that are very life-like.

I can almost guarantee that they had a team working on doing just that, but the furthest they could get were the emoji.  Wonder if 3rd party folks can figure out a way to do it.  Maybe saving it for next years phone.

Because I tell people I'm doing this :lmao: , when I'm actually just this

Nah, folks will be able to create a library of their own reactions to be used whenever they want.  So they'll have lol emoji on demand, from way back when something funny actually happened or they just faked it for the actual emoji.  Custom emoji will be pretty awesome.

I've had the iPhone6 for 3 years.  The screen is cracked all over (which i don't really mind), but a couple months ago the touch screen became sporadic.  I have to wear AirPods during the day so i can pick up calls.

With the iPhoneX coming out figured i could stomach the one month wait instead of getting the iphone8 which is the same exact design as their phone from 3 years ago.

Waiting a couple more weeks won't kill me but definitely would like to get the phone asap.

I don't upgrade every year.  When i do it's not a big deal to get up for 10 minutes in middle of the night.

Picked up 256gb  iPhone X today at Costco. Was surprised they had them in stock. She said they got 6 this morning. Only had it for a couple hours and haven't had a chance to play with it much but it looks great. No bezel is so much nicer.

I have two phones.. one iphone (work), one android (personal).  They all work fine for me.. don't care much.

Having said that, I always find it amusing to see iphone people so excited/bragging about features android phones have had for years now (ie quick charging/fingerprint security/etc).

If you were picking a phone based on new and innovative features, it would never be the iphone.  You could never convince an Apple loyalist of this, of course..... but they sure seem to love those features when they show up two iterations later on their iphone.

Weird.

This is true, but iOS >>>> Android OS.  That's what seals the deal for me.

I use my phone for both work and personal. I can only get work emails on iPhone so that’s what I have.  I do however totally agree with what you’re saying. I’d get an android if it weren’t the email thing.

Apple however does have a resale value.  Android phones aren’t worth squat in 2 years.

Many times that’s the case except the X camera and iOS (mentioned).

I got the x today and will probably return it. The screen is a bit too narrow for me unfortunately.

Coming from a 6s+
The screen is too narrow? Or the phone? It appears that the width of the screen on the X is about the same as on a 6s+.

edit:  After doing a bit of research, it looks like it's a few mms narrower.

Seems like a weird reason to return it. Gotta be shtick.

I got the X yesterday. Went from the 6 to the X. Quick thoughts are:

- the extra screen size compared to a modest increase in phone size is great

- the cut-out black notch at the top isn’t bothersome at all

- the facial recognition works good, but I don’t like extra step you have — because after it unlocks the phone with FR, you have to swipe up to get to home screen. With the Touch ID, after it unlocked it went straight to home screen. I think the extra swipe is because it’s easier to accidentally unlock the phone with FR and it’s a safeguard to make sure you really want to look at your phone

- it won’t be long before the world forgets about a home button. Swiping up for the home screen is easy and extra screen space is great.

- closing out apps has taken a step backwards  you used to double click the home button and then swipe up to close an app  now, because swiping up takes you to home screen, you have to swipe up, pause, then press an app page to get the red “-l to appear  then you close out apps by pressing the red “-“.  Not a big deal, but not as good as it was

- for me, the animated emoji function is a waste, but I’m not a 16yo girl.

- glad to have the newest tech, but it’s just another phone

No its no shtick it is a legit grievance.  The narrow screen might make the overall visible display larger but many apps use much less of this space.  Coming from a Plus I can see this as a drawback.  I came from a 7 Plus and the loss of real estate is noticeable, for me there are enough benefits to keep the phone, but bigbottom is right.

I tried it at the Apple Store yesterday and this was my reaction too.  I have a 7+ and really I didn't see much difference.  At first I honestly couldn't even figure out which ones in the store were the X and which were the 8s.  It took me a while to realize I needed to look for one without a home button.  Once I played with it, I liked the no home button thing and the swipe up, but it otherwise quickly became just an iphone and not all that different from my 7+.  Certainly didn't feel $1200 out of pocket better.  So I don't think I'll rush out for it, probably will wait a while.

This is about where i stand.  I would say what i like the most about this phone is the size.  I had previously been using a 6s plus.  Great phone but a touch too big especially if i want to do things with one hand.  This phone to me is the perfect size and was the main reason i bought it over the 8+.

Other than that, everything is fast, i dont miss the home button, facial recognition works as advertised.  I would say that the only times it doesnt work are if i have the phone sitting on a table and i dont tilt it slightly towards my face.  But otherwise it is pretty good at authenticating me, even in the dark, even wearing classes.  Oh, it did have issues when i had my hood on though.  Im told it starts to learn this stuff though.

I concur about the closing of apps.  that is my one bone to pick.  But i guess it will just take getting used to.  Or maybe they will change that.

Oh and the emoji thing is pretty stupid, but my infant son loves it so already that feature has paid off!

My other bone to pick was the whole removal of the audio jack.  but i mostly use bluetooth headphones now so its a non issue.  But i do need to get the adapter for when i want to use my over the ear cans.

Prince Myshkin said:
I thought I read where they were including the adapter.  Is this not the case?
It's in the box.  The box includes headphones with the lightning plug and a short headphone jack to lightning plug adapter.  They don't give a carrying case for the headphones though, that was disappointing.

I haven't tried Apple Pay yet, but I use it regularly so I'll report back later.

Edit:  used Apple Pay this morning and it’s just as easy as before.

No shtick. The Screen on the X is 7mm narrower than the Plus. Check 6:24 of this video https://youtu.be/X6d003MtiCQ

which means videos in 16:9 (which is most video) looks much smaller on the X

Also font is much smaller on web pages such as this very forum

im going to give it a week and see how it goes, but ideally for me the iPhone X should have been a little wider

Coming from a 7+ and I think this is the PERFECT size phone.  It’s super fast as well.

Love it so far.
Also coming from the 7+ and I have to say that some of the apps look smaller because of the screen ratio.  I will get used to it and I like the size verse screen real estate, even if some apps are smaller.

Anyone currntly from 6+/7+ to X have a issue with the cut out screen at the top of the X? Seems this is a major con with the X.  Have the 6+ and preorder came in but rethinking the upgrade.

What issues are you referring to? Barely notice it tbh.  No issue at all

The cut out doesn't bother me.

I dislike the narrow screen width and I'm starting to hate Face ID.

Other than that, the phone is excellent
