The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

So regarding Safari, is there anyway to change the settings in the iPhone to let you view FULL web pages as opposed to the 'mobile' versions? Such as the ones for CBS/ESPN, etc.? I googled it a few times but wasn't able to find anything (probably since I'm not exactly sure what to search...)
I was at a bar last night and went to www.nfl.com on my winmo phone and got some crappy WAP site that did not even work. I don't think the phone is restricting you, the site is probably checking what version of what browser you are using, recognizes the browser as a mobile browser application and serves up the scaled down site as a result.

This doesnt always work, but sometimes I will email myself a full site I want and it will work.ESPN has an option on the bottom of the page that allows you full site access, at least they used to

:thumbdown:I thought one of the big deals for the iPhone was that it was full web-browsing?

It is. But if a website does a browser check and automatically redirects an iPhone to their mobile version there isn't much the iPhone can do about it.

Dark Knight version at the itunes store uses 1.6gb , Iron Man 1.38gb & The Incredibles 1.29gb so that seems right

I just didn't realize movies took up that much space. I guess one of those things where you rotate them maybe?

I used load a bunch of stuff on my iPod, but with orblive, I can watch any movie from my home PC, as well as music, recorded tv, and photos. Now I really don't have much need for the 8 gb I have, with the exception of travel by plane where Internet access is unavailable

Here's some helpful info someone gave me about movies on your iPhone.
1st off I'm offended that you linked to such vulgar language :moneybag: . 2nd he's not talking about the iPhone specifically, just movies on cell phones. But he makes a good point- most films are meant to be seen in a theater, under certain conditions. The same is true for watching movies on an airplane... in fact, I'd rather watch a movie on my iPhone, than an airplane. What about watching movies in a lousy 640x480 standard definition format.

So does anyone have any idea why whenever I open an App it just automatically closes itself and I land back on my 'desktop'? Very annoying... just started happening this morning.

Check for updates to those applications.

It helps to restart the phone every few days. There seem to be quite a few memory leaks in some of the apps. You can hold down the top power button until you get the "slide to power off" slider at the top of the screen. Slide it to power the iPhone off, then briefly press the power button to turn it back on.If the device is *really* in a freaked-out state, an orderly reset might not always work. To force a reset, hold down the front button while holding the top power button. After a few seconds, the iPhone will power itself down without requiring you to do the slider thing. After a few seconds, press the top power button briefly to turn it back on.

I'm hard on phones ,always dropping them. I bought a hard plastic case from the apple store . Without exaggeration I've dropped my phone at least 20 times with no damage , the plastic shell looks like crap but the phone is fine.

Mine looks cool with the case. Regardless, I abuse mine so I'm playing it safe. The one I use doesn't add much bulk. I think with as much as u touch this thing screen protectors are a must.

Plan on buying an iPhone this week, also going to shop around for a case.http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&keywor...nics&page=1
I use one made by agent 18 , hard plastic & doesn't add bulk

OrbLive is screwed up right now. The service that they use for tv listings is pretty much borked right now, so when you try to setup the program, you can't complete the setup. It won't give you any services at all when you enter your zipcode, so you can't get the tv listings setup which means you can't get the program setup and running at all. Apparently this has been going on for about a week now. :goodposting:

If you haven't purchased it and were planning on it, I'd stay away for now. So far I've spent $10 for an app that doesn't work.

Thanks for the update. I was looking to download it in the next day or two and give it a whirl. Let me know when things are back to normal. Thanks.

Yep, found that out myself. Still waiting for the Slingplayer, but there are rumors that Apple is not giving Sling all the access to the SDK they need. Likely trying to freeze them out to help sell more Apple TV unit. Steve Jobs is a ####.

AT&T had refurbished ones from $99 for the 8GB and $199 for the 16GB. They also had new ones at $199 and $299 respectively. The only catch is you had to get a 2 year contract, I'm already with AT&T so that didn't matter, and you had to have an individual account. I was going to get one but they were taking $50 of the discounts off because I had a business account. I didn't quite understand that line of thinking so I just decided to hold out.

Steve Jobs may be a ####, but he's not a dummy. AppleTV is a side hobby for them, no way he would freeze out Sling IMO. First, he knows the power of killer apps to sell iPhones, they are running ads right now promoting third party apps like Shazam and Pandora. Second, I don't even think Apple TV in the same space competes as Slingbox; you can't access your Apple TV with your laptop or iPhone (AFAIK). Maybe Apple has something similar up their sleeves, but it's all speculation as no one knows what Apple has in development.

Zagg Invisible Shield On sale for 30% off until the end of today. I have this on my ipod touch and it doesnt even look like it has a case on it. I've dropped the thing, hit it with my keys (in my pocket), and i keep it in a pocket of my laptop case, and there's not even a scratch on it.

It's working for me now. I'm not sure if it's working all the way around or not though. There's actually a thread in their forums where you can post your zip code and tv service and supposedly they'll notify the tv listing service and get things working for that zip code. I did post my zip there last night and it's working today. So I don't know if it's working because of that, or if it's just back to working properly like it should.

Oh, well that changes things. Not really a "rumor" then if it's coming from Sling. I still find it hard to believe Apple would freeze out Sling because of AppleTV. They are two completely different devices. Granted Apple could be developing a similar app to use in conjunction, but it still doesn't feel correct to me. If Apple is acting nefarious here, I would at least argue their concern would be over losing iTunes TV/movie sales. But I highly doubt that as well. Apple wants to sell iPhones. That is their priority, that is their focus. They would not sacrifice possible iPhone sales over AppleTV or iTunes sales. The bigger picture is winning the smart phone wars and Sling just isn't a big enough player to worry about in the digital media war.

One possible issue may be AT&T, they just launched a streaming TV service that would be a direct conflict with Sling. It's not on iPhone (yet) but I could see them protecting that business.

Good. True or not, I'm in favor of *any* market pressure that incents Apple to loosen the reigns on app approval. The less time Apple spends gerrymandering the technical capabilities of this device to lock out competition in markets they may want to enter eventually, or to protect partners with inferior services, the better off we device owners will be. Watching the apps that are being released these days is starting to become immensely depressing. How many fart noise apps do we really need? The only reason there was a pent-up demand for them in the first place was another heavy-handed denial decision by Apple over the original "Pull My Finger" app. And the problem will continue to get worse. Because as a developer, you have a choice of how to spend your time. You can create another "me-too" soundboard featuring all sorts of bodily noises, or you can build something that truly extends the functionality of the device. The difference is that the first is relatively easy, proven profitable, and Apple will likely approve it quickly because it's just like a hundred other apps in the Store. The second is more difficult and more time consuming to build, and the kicker is that you have to complete the app 100% and submit it to Apple before you can even get a decision about whether they will allow it or not. At that point, you are fully invested from an effort perspective before you know whether you can get rewarded for it. The rational economic choice there is easy.

Apple by their current strategy is stoking the fires of the iPhone unlocking movement. They're going to have to start moving faster and being more open or the underground market is going to start moving into the mainstream. All it would take would be for one spurned developer to release a compelling enough app that requires a jailbroken iPhone and monetize it, and there go the floodgates.

I wish still had the link I found via Google, but someone posted the letter from Sling and that was their claim, that the full developers kit wasn't given to them. I agree that it makes more sense to me to fast track to sell more iPhones, especially since you may get people like me who have the EDGE to upgrade to the 3G if I can watch my sling on it and need the 3G for speed.

Either way, I hope they get it soon because Orb just doesn't seem as good as I expected.

The more I think about it the more it doesn't make sense. If Apple were protecting iTunes sales, no way would they allow Pandora, AOL Radio, Flycast... etc. to be free downloads. I don't even carry music on my iPhone, much less pay to buy music from Apple. There is no need when I have more music than I could ever own for free at the touch of a finger with those free apps. Sling even requires purchase of a Slingbox. There is no cost of entry for Pandora et. al. They are free downloads.

Just reloaded Orb Live on my PC and iPhone with no problems. Channels all look fine here. It might be your configuration.

I don't understand why there is no cut and paste still. This phone is unbelievably cool, but C/P should be a no brainer.

Two of the best games for the iPhone are Rolando & Edge. Rolando is a great game that resembles Loco Roco for the PSP. And Edge is like Marble Madness but with a cube. Both are extremely well done. Check em out.

Slingbox for iPhone

Sling Media revealed that HD streaming will be coming to Mac users via Sling.com, and they plan to submit the Sling iPhone app for approval in Q1 of this year.
Awesome. This just made my day. Someone post it on here immediately when it is for sale. I am still kicking myself for not purchasing that tether modem thing when I had the chance
