and even more nauseous is the endless self promotion all over the place. WTF cares if a burger joint is Zagat rated?

Five guys is so much better than in n out it's scary.
Went to our first Five Guys on our last trip to the states. Agree that it is better but not worth the trouble of trying to find one. We usually hit up an In and Out on the way down to Disneyland. Also only marginally better IMO, not worth the price difference. You are getting your whole meal at In and out for less than what your burger costs at 5 guys.

That right there is the proper way to have fries. In a paper cone with about 4-5 tablespoons of mayo on top. John Travolta in Pulp Fiction was right, except its ####### delicious.

You guys can argue your silly American fast food "fries" all you want, but none of it is comparable.

Still waiting for someone to open a proper Belgian friterie over here. It would be a game changer.

Wendys should just sell Frostys. Everything else there is awful.
There are some regional differences at Wendy's. I live where Wendy's is headquarted and the food is really good. I've been to a couple on road trips that were meh...but overall saying its awful is not correct.

I've been to the new Wendy's "flagship" store across from the corporate office on 161... the food is #### now. Wendy's was great back when their burger patties were so big the corners hung outside the bun. Today their burgers are barely better than McDonalds. I'll go to Burger King before Wendy's now... and Wendy's was my "go to" fasst food burger joint for decades. I weep for what has happened to Wendy's lately. It's really gone to ####.

Grub grade gives In N Out fries 9.25 out of 10

"These were fries in which the potato was the true star, and the natural earthy sweetness"
Well, if they got the same score as Popeye's Chicken Waffle Tenders, they must be good.
Don't disrespect the Grub Grade.
He gave microwaveable White Castle burgers a 9.0 out of 10I think he did a fine job disrespecting me having to read that.
I will agree that in and out fries are just slightly better than a microwaveable white castle burger. I think we are close to a compromise here.

I never get fries at Five Guys.

Wendy's are good, McDonalds are still the best IMO but only at one of the franchises that use salt.
Wait, there are places that won't put salt on fries?

Yeah, the one near my house doesn't, and I've gone to others through the years that barely salt. I don't add salt to anything but fries either, so it's not like I'm a fiend for it on all my food. Adding them after the fact is of course an option, but it's not the same after the fries cool off IMO. Since I don't use ketchup with McDonalds fries (or any superior fries), they taste a little bland at times.

Completely agree. Growing up it was the best fast food option by a mile. Now it's a shell of what it was. Tastes nothing like it used to. Gross.

I have a feeling that Cook Out will be spreading to many more locations outside of just the SE. It'll never be the best of anything, but it's a solid burger and fries that is absolutely dirt cheap.

Most everything on the menu is fairly cheap and rinky dink, but the burgers/fries are pretty good considering the price.

I mean dirt cheap.

I think the Cookout Tray is less than $5 and comes with a burger (or other sandwich), a drink, and 2 sides. The ridiculous part is that they count all kinds of crazy #### as sides. Corn dogs, wraps, and quesadillas.

I'm not a milkshake guy, but I know several milkshake lovers that seem to really enjoy them.
This place?

Never heard of it, but there's one like 5 minutes from me. Reviews seem all over the place and slightly leaning more towards mediocre/negative. It definitely looks cheap though.

When I was a kid and went to AZ to visit family, Sonic was awesome. Fast forward 25 years, they came here (Illinois) to our town. Absolutely, completely horrible. I tried them 4-5 times, brutal. Did something change?
Never got food at a Sonic but Ive enjoyed their happy hour drinks when Ive had them.

Yep, and I also agree that BK is the best of the big 3 these days.

Fries are a salt and fat delivery mechanism. Take the salt out and it just becomes nasty...

And for scoresman - Belgian fries are the best, but unfortunately they tend to be in Belgium...

I was never one for mayo on fries though. Either plain or ketchup for me.

That's it. It's not great, but it's hard to beat if you want really cheap.

Burgers are solid and have a decent grilled flavor. Fries aren't bad either. You can tell they come in frozen (like every place in this poll except 5G and I-n-O), but right out of the fryer they are better than most FF fries.

Haven't had much outside of the burgers/fries. With a place that cheap with that many menu items, it's unlikely those other things will be worth a crap. You couldn't pay me to try their "BBQ".

What does In N Out's menu consist of? 100% Hamburgers/Cheeseburgers…what does McD/BK/Wendys look like? The beef has no fillers, no preservatives, it's all fesh beef, In n Out has their own plants in TX and CA I believe and they have much more control over their product.

I'm not saying In n Out is healthier but the idea that you might at least know what you are eating is relevant. Sure the $10 burger at mom n pop is better but again for $6 or about that you get a whole meal at In n Out, but even it were $8-$9 like 5 Guys I would prefer In n Out and the entire process. The menu is short and sweet.

What do you suppose those others are actually serving? Guess what, their fries are made out of potatoes and their hamburgers out of beef. You act like they're selling dog.

The main problem with In N Out besides their flavorless fries is most people don't have one anywhere nearby.

I normally get the spicy or grilled chicken when I go. The fries are definitely better than they used to be. The meat squares and buns have shrunk; no denying that but claiming that its trash vs MCDs or bk...I'm not seeing it. The veggie toppings are 1000x better than MCDs and they don't absurdly over-mayo things like BK.

The other places make their fries out of frozen french fries, and their beef out of frozen patties. In-N-Out does do things differently than other fast-food places.

(And McDonald's fries contain hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk, which contain free glutamate. It's essentially MSG without having to put "MSG" on the label. You'll find the same ingredients at most other fast food places as well.)

Twice fried french fries taste better. Places like Five Guys and In n' Out that only fry them once deliver subpar fries. It doesn't matter that they've been cut fresh.

When Dave died so did the franchise. He used to go on talk circuits and was invited on the Late Late Show with Tom Snyder, he seemed dedicated to his business. I think he would have another heart attack if he came back and tasted the menu now. Those burgers tasted a heckuva lot better when I was growing up. And Wendy's was not on every corner like McD and BK, maybe a 3:1 ratio of McD to Wendy's around me.

It's a shame. We just got a brand new one not far form my house, tried it a couple times on cold days for chili and basics, just bland and made me wish I hadn't.

I always got my INO fries well done when I used to go. Now the questions becomes, would you rather have MSG-laden pre-frozen fries or carcinogenic fries?

I wish I could try INO. Sounds delicious.
It isn't... I was in SF, I went out of my way to Fishermans Wharf just to try it, I was so excited and even that much more disappointed - Imagine being all hyped for a meal and landing in McDonalds, that's how I felt, with a slightly better Le Big Mac and huge downgrade on fries.

It seems like these burger and fries polls always come down to whatever your local burger is. If five guys is yours, then 90 percent of you won't admit or ever think in and out lives up to the hype. Vice Versa with iNO locals.
I love both burgers.

I think my heart stopped just looking at that. :X

Any Cook Out fans here? How widespread are they nationally?
Really just in the southeast, I believe. Bojangles and Cookout are still fairly new in this area. Cookout's killing it. Best I can tell, these VA folk are still discovering the joy of Bojangles. They can be a little slow sometimes.

Spicy Chicken is the best in the biz, yo.
Better than Chick-fil-a spicy chicken?
In all honesty, yes. I have a unique perspective, in that, I only started eating chicken about a year ago. All I have ever heard is Chik-Fil-A is heaven on a bun. While I agree it's good, Wendy's spicy chicken is just flat out better. Bigger filet, better seasoning. I would never turn down a Chik-Fil-A sammich, I just prefer Wendy's.

Noticed 5 years ago on a trip from Charlotte to PA that the Bojangles went away after Statesville. I was surprised by that.

Cookout tray is the best deal in town. Choice of 1/4 burger mto / chicken / bbq / etc, 2 sides, and drink / float for $4.50. Sides include chicken wrap and the famous bacon wrap. One of the local joints has 99 cent promo shakes.

I don't travel much throughout VA, but I haven't seen any outside of the Lynchburg area. There are 2 in Lynchburg, and there's one about 45 min. south on 29, in the middle of nowhwere just north of Danville.

They must be doing okay here to have opened a 2nd, but people still seem pretty loyal to Biscuitville for their fast food breakfast (stuped long lines) and god knows what for their fast food fried chicken (KFC is the only other option). I don't see the appropriate Bojangles traffic yet.

Cookout took a location that had 3-4 straight failed restaurants previously and had lines wrapping around the building immediately. Been here a little over a year and it's still jamming.

Great cheap burger and fries.
