The cocktail thread (1 Viewer)

I drank a few of these over the holidays... Fireball with apple cider, warmed up in the microwave.  Delicious asf.

That’s awesome but does that get messy? (The tree, not you after the drink)
Yeah, it's not a clean tree. Blossoms, leaves and the oranges drop off of it. Luckily I can just tell my kid to take the leaf blower out and clean up. We save the dropped oranges for the cows across the street, they love them

Also, and this is was exactly my first thought when you mentioned messy, it is VERY messy to make. Juicing an orange, straining the pulp if you're an amateur *looks over computer at wife*, but worth it imo. :banned:

Pulled another drink from the Star Trek cocktail book:

Spock’s Slipper

2 ounces tequila (I used Patron)

1 ounce Midori (or any melon liqueur)

1 ounce lime juice

Shake and serve over ice. It’s tasty

Closing Argument is a Last Word made with Mezcal, and if you sub Irish Whiskey, its called a Dublin Minstrel

The wonderful Champs-Elysee (if you have Cognac in house) is Cognac, Green Chartreuse, fresh Lemon Juice, housemade Simple Syrup, aromatic bitters

Doesn't look like Jules has been around in a while and for some reason I can't tag him.  Has anybody every had this drink or have any other Irish Whiskey cocktail recommendations?  Right now I've got this one and Tipperary on the list for our St. Patrick's Day get together.

I'll need to tread through this - could be my new favorite thread. I've got a couple good ones if they haven't already been covered.  My standard is Tuaca & cola. But when I have guests I do a lot of fruity poolside drinks (Margaritas, Hurricanes, etc)

Had some folks over for cocktails this weekend - Finally made some homemade orgeat for the first time and I thought it turned out well. We also made lime super juice - not totally sure it’s worth it. If you have a decent juicer and don’t mind the extra cost I still prefer fresh juice. But it was ok.

Made Mai Tai’s and Painkillers so kind of turned in to a Tiki night. I think scooby is a big Mai Tai fan and I am too - great drink if done right.

Yup. It's probably supplanted the Manhattan as my favorite cocktail. Don't have much of either anymore with me trying to get my health straightened out, and the Manhattan is a "safer" indulgence because it doesn't have any added sugar. But you just can't beat a well-made Mai Tai. It's a perfect drink. Thank God for the classic cocktail revival, though. When I was in college in the early 90's any Mai Tai you got was a "hotel Mai Tai" with all kinds of weird fruit juices and stuff. Just terrible, 70s style sugar bombs. I thought it was pretty much the worst (and trashiest) drink around.

Made some Painkillers over the weekend with Pusser's rum (the traditional rum for the cocktail). Delicious.

For straight up deliciousness the Painkiller is up there. Loaded with juice so you have to have a sweet tooth but dang do they go down easy. I think the Mai Tai is the far better drink - much more complexity and balance but if you have any pain you want to kill it does the job.

I'd say if I was to choose just one, on a one-off, I'd probably take a Painkiller, but I make far more Mai Tais at home. I don't always have orange juice on-hand, and sometimes don't want to crack a can of Coco Lopez.

For Tiki lovers, this one has become a regular staple for me - You're Not My Real Trinidad. It's a fun riff on the Pina Colada/Painkiller cream of coconut world of cocktails with Angostura bitters as the base spirit.

Had a Queens Park Hotel Super Cocktail the other day, it'll definitely be in my rotation now. Don't know how I hadn't come across it before. The one I made didn't call for any simple, but I think called for more grenadine.

A drink that has gone over well at the local bar is a cherry crème fizz - 1 part stoli vanilla and
2 parts vernors black Cherry ginger ale. It’s something quick and easy,

Got this Milk and Honey cocktail from The Educated Barfly.

Fallback
1oz Rye
1oz Applejack
.5oz Amaro Nonino
.5oz Sweet Vermouth
2 dashes Peychauds bitters

Manhattan variation and one I really like - recommend.

Other great rye cocktails are the Remember the Maine

Can’t remember if I made this before or not but just made one. Quite good- really enjoy the Heering in it (but it’s one of my favorite liqueurs). Think I would back off the Absinthe just a hair - I did about 3/4 barspoon. Think it should be more like 1/4 for my palate. Still very good.

It's that time again. The World Cup starts on Sunday, and I've built a 2022 Drinking Guide for your drinking/viewing pleasure.

Some notes about this year:
  • I think this will be the most complete version I've done. Of the 96 drinks I have a drink for 92 of them
  • The four "missing" are Saudi Arabia liquor (not allowed), Qatar liquor and cocktail (somewhat not allowed but just couldn't find anything) and Senegal liquor (unable to find anything).
  • I spent more time on the layout and formatting of the drinks this year. The guide is mostly the same because I'm not super creative. I wanted to do a mobile app because I think there's potential for a money maker there, but I didn't have the time to figure it out
  • I removed wine from the guide this year. I know nothing about wine, and it ended up being a waste of time for me. If somebody is a big wine nerd and would like to contribute shoot me a PM.
I'd love feedback on the guide as well as input on drinks. Criticism is welcome.

I'll have a ton of other posts in here as I make some of the cocktails. There's definitely a handful that are new and ones I'm not familiar with. Enjoy.

Just realized the clickthrough links for the ingredients. Awesome :banned:

I’m thinking about adding a couple more views that lists all the beers, liquor and cocktails one a page. Also, a full ingredients page although I’m not sure anybody is as dedicated to the task as me. :)

Well, this was unexpected. I was totally underwhelemed with the one match today and my drinks choices basically being one thing - Canelazo. But it's freaking delicious - highly recommend.

Ingredients
  • 3 cups water
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 4 to 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 4 ounces aguardiente, or rum, more to taste

Directions
  1. Bring the water, both kinds of sugar, lime juice, salt, cloves, and cinnamon sticks to a boil.
  2. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in the orange juice.
  4. Add the aguardiente or rum, to taste.
  5. Reheat without boiling. If it boils, the alcohol will boil away.
  6. Strain and serve hot.

ETA - word of warning - the recipe as-is is VERY sweet. If you don't enjoy sweet drinks I would scale back on the brown sugar a decent amount. Maybe cut it in half even.

I just don’t care for Genever and I gave my bottle to my buddy. Doubt I would have used it anyway - made this drink before and kind of hated it. Better with gin.

Once again I am forgoing the Genever for Gin. I made this during Euro 2020 and loved it even with the Genever - if you love cherries this gets highest marks from me. Delicious.

I used my bourbon barrel finished Tequila thinking it would add some complexity - it did but was the wrong decision. Do not advise messing with the original recipe.

I’ve always enjoyed a Sidecar even though I’m not a big Cognac fan. I recommend tweaking the Liquor.com recipe with either a bar spoon of simple (my choice) or reduce the lemon juice to .5 oz. The Cognac will come through either way but seems to be more balanced with a little sugar and several online recipes agree with me as they actually have the simple in their recipe.
