The cocktail thread (1 Viewer)

A bit of a crisis while shut-in... my cocktail shaker must have rusted together or something and I can't get it apart (I tried the freezer/hot water thing to no avail).  Any suggestions here? I just have/had a cheap, small 8 oz 3 piece.  I do have a strainer that could work with a Boston shaker.

I was looking at Amazon, but everything that I was looking at is third party fulfilled by Amazon with a delivery date of late April, which is of no help to me.  Any other good vendors out there?

wd40 the crease, let it sit for an hour, then dishwasher.

What part is stuck; the small cap or the very top? The top of mine was stuck recently and I couldn't budge it until I held the wall of the top (inside/outside) and it came off surprisingly easy.

Cap came off (so, I was able to get cocktail out), but could not separate the top and bottom when I went to clean it. I tried the WD-40 that another poster suggested, but that was no help either.

I ended up buying a Boston shaker off Amazon. It told me it would not be delivered until April 21, but I got it within 3 days. 🤷‍♂️ I appreciate Amazon recognizing the severity of the situation. Made a martini with it tonight.

Shamed my inner cocktail snob by making a totally bougie spiked root beer float last night.  Didn't even know I had Captain Morgan, but damn if it isn't tasty in a float.  Made on concession to snobbishness by adding some sassafras and sorghum bitters to the whole thing.

I have ginger syrup that's amazing.

I have most every type of whiskey you could want (e.g. rye, bourbon, scotch, japanese, and varying profiles within each).

I want to make something delicious this evening but don't want to make a mule (I'm good at that and want to learn something new).

I used to make Chocolate Shakes with Captain Morgan in them for our Adult Milkshake and sold a lot of them

I love this idea, and I happen to have IBC root beer, Haagen Dasz vanilla and a few nips of el Capitan on hand.

Have you ever had a Paper Plane? Well liked cocktail on these boards. Doesn't use Ginger but you did say delicious

Some type of variation on a ginger bourbon smash would seem the obvious choice.  Do you have some type of citrus and mint?

Here is one we've poured that came from Difford's Guide

The Saint

1.5 oz Bourbon

.75 oz fresh lemon juice

.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice

.5 oz Tattersall Americano (recipe calls for Lillet Blanc but we support local Tattersall)

dash of Ginger SS

Shake until chilled and double strain into an up glass

Here’s one from my go to cocktail book

whirling Tiger

2 oz Bourbon

1 oz Fuji apple juice

3/4 oz lemon juice

1/2 oz ginger syrup

shaken
ooo this sounds good too. Do you think it would work with some hard cider instead of apple juice (working with what I've got here)

Or, the very easy Cablegram with BiB Rye, Ginger SS, fresh lime juice, and fresh Soda Water
Is Ginger SS meant to be ginger simple syrup? Sorry for novice question. I've got ginger syrup and simple syrup. Or is the ginger syrup already like gingery simple syrup? I guess I should read the label more closely LOL.

I've got Michter's, Rittenhouse BiB, Rendezvous Double (high West), Bulleitt, and Sazerac for my Rye choices. Sounds like you'd use the Rittenhouse?

Yes, SS is abbreviation for simple syrup. What is in your ginger syrup?

Someone in this thread brought up Last Word... just wanted to say thank you.

Went down and got some Luxardo, Green Charteuse.  Excellent.

What else can I do with Luxardo and/or Green Chartreuse?

Closing Argument is a Last Word made with Mezcal, and if you sub Irish Whiskey, its called a Dublin Minstrel

The wonderful Champs-Elysee (if you have Cognac in house) is Cognac, Green Chartreuse, fresh Lemon Juice, housemade Simple Syrup, aromatic bitters

Rye, Luxardo and sweet vermouth, ~equal parts is a Redhook. Add some bitters and some Luxardo cherries. Thumbs up.

Take the Ginger syrup and pour 1 ounce and add to that 1 ounce of water. Now you have Ginger Simple Syrup

From Bon Appetit

The Witty Comeback

2 ounces rye whiskey

.5 ounce Averna Amaro

.5 ounce fresh lemon juice

.5 ounce Ginger Simple Syrup

Orange twist garnish

Pour ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake until outside of shaker gets a touch frosty. Double strain train into an up glass or if you prefer, over a large ice rock, and garnish.

(I prefer to double strain my cocktails to keep the small ice pieces from getting into my drink for both appearance and prevention of watering down my cocktail)

Currently drinking a Bee's Knees.  My first time making it; worked with what I had in the house.  Wanted a gin drink, but gin and tonic seemed kind of boring and wasn't feeling a martini. Made some honey simple syrup (using some Rancho de Chimayo honey that usually pairs well with sopapillas), added gin (used Bombay Sapphire, but may try Hendrick's next) and lime juice (don't have lemon, but I've read both work). Pretty smooth.
