The dumb new NFL Kickoff (2 Viewers)

I mean they have to announce it like 4th graders, so stupid, if a team can't figure it out at the time (4th Qtr and losing) that's on them
What are you talking about? It's a completely different alignment on different yard markers for both teams. Not to mention that without announcing an onside kick in advance, the kick would then be too short with the present rules and result in an offensive penalty. You can't do an onside kick successfully with the present alignment....the Kicker is about 20 yards back from the rest of his team. They announce it in advance so all players can get lined up on the correct yard lines and not get a penalty for the kick only going 10 yds.

I don’t even know what I just witnessed in the Miami- Tennessee game. They should just spin a big prize wheel at the start of each half to choose what kicking rules are in effect.

Onside kicks are 6 on 6? Sure. Field goals under 30 yards are only worth 2 points? Go for it. Want to really reduce high speed collisions? Have a square that makes both teams pair up three-legged race style.

What exactly did you witness cuz nobody else was watching this game over the Lions v Seahawks.
Dolphins onside kick. They punted instead of using a tee, accidentally kicked it too far, and neither the players, coaches, nor refs knew what to do.

I also thought it would have needed to be a dropkick. But, ultimately, the ball was kicked too far for the "zone" the team needs to kick the ball into for it to be a legit onside kick under the new rules.

Respectfully, I don't understand why that's so confusing (though I recognize the players and refs were confused so maybe I'm the weird one).

I just answered a question. Don't shoot the messenger.

They elected to do an onside after a safety,
So they have to punt, drop kick or place kick so no tee is allowed. The travelling too far and being a punt screwed everyone up 😂

How can you kick an onside "too far". So stupid.

They banned squibs also, so onside has to land stay within 25 yards

I believe it was an after a safety onside kick is what made it so confusing. A regular onside kick can use a tee and be just like old rules.

I am not sure I've ever seen a team attempt an onside kick after a safety. After seeing the results, I am pretty sure I know why.
It's actually a smart move. It's 4th and 27 from your own 10 yd line and you are down anything from 1 to 6. Giving up the 2 pts is meaningless at that point and by doing the safety you at least have the chance to keep the ball with an onside kick. The execution of the kick was the issue and I still don't understand why there is a limit as to how far and onside kick can go. I guess it's because people could just call onside kicks every time and then kick it deep to pin a team back? Still dumb.

Is there any other play where the intentions of the team with the ball must be declared beforehand, with no option for a fake? Seems antithetical to the spirit of the game.
You have to declare a specific O lineman eligible to receive. Kinda tips a hand.

But in that case, that O lineman doesn't have to receive, doesn't even have to leave the line. In other words you are telegraphing a play but are free to pivot away from that play without notifying the other team.

It's actually a smart move.
Except that isn't what happened. Miami had just taken an intentional grounding. With the penalty they gave up ton of yardage and eventually ate a TD. It was a 9 point delta. They didn't intentionally take the safety

I was giving you a reason where a team would attempt an onside kick after a safety. I didn't say that is why they did it here.

I always wondered if the rules technically permit an O-lineman to be "designated" every play and, if so, why teams don't strategically just designate an o-lineman every play because why not?

Maybe for that they would need to be lined up in an eligible spot every play. Not all formations allow for that when you are using a lineman unless you wanted to take away an actual pass catcher from the field.

Ah, makes sense. I should have figured that.

Pretty good night for the Dynamic Kickoff so far. 8 of 9 have been returned, a fumble recovered by the kicking team and another recovered by the return team, a returner tackled at the 10 and a KO touchdown return. Several of these kicks are dropping inside the 5 which makes it interesting.
