I need to know whether anyone puts out an Eason's-type book of damage awards for Arizona. I have a friend who lives there I'm trying to point in the right direction regarding a soft-tissue injury in a car accident, and I just have no sense of what's a reasonable award for a 6-month treatment soft tissue injury from a rear-end collision. He wants to handle this himself, and I just can't really advise him on this.

Policies and philosophies vary from medium to medium. The two most influential guidebooks for publishers, editors, and writers, the Associated Press Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, have different approaches. The first recommends spelling out the numbers one through nine and using figures thereafter; Chicago recommends spelling out the numbers one through ninety-nine and using figures thereafter.

I assumed he was upset about the thread where northerners were arguing that southerners are uneducated hicks. I spent quite some time trying to teach him basic grammar in that thread. It wasn't in the Shark Pool, though, so unless he's wrong again, he's not referring to that.Ah, didn't know there was a backstory. It appears HF didn't know, either. Is 1600 hours a lot of billables? For a year? (Skadden's requirement, according to partner I had lunch with today). He seems to think it is very low compared to other firms.

Basically, yes. He did his job, and this is on the court, so you chalk it up to the cost of doing business.
If you're dealing with a smaller client, maybe you cut them a break on the fees as a courtesy but you don't "owe" it to them to do so.

No, it's not. That said, that number can mean some different things. For example, Skadden may be a "white glove" firm that wants associates to do pro bono work, so that number might be their billing to actual paying clients, while they expect a certain number of additional hours for the pro bono, work on committees (big firms love committees), client development, etc.
The benchmark in my experience for billables at insurance defense firms is typically around 1800-1900 hours, which typically works out to around 8 hours per work day, once you've accounted for holidays and vacations. Some firms demand more, or simply indicate you don't qualify for a bonus unless you hit the benchmark first.
If you're an absolute grinder as a biller in a high volume insurance defense firm, however, hitting 2400+ (200+/month) is pretty easily done; this works out to 9+ hours per day. The true maniacs can hit 3000. I can bill at that level for a month or two, especially if I'm in trial, but it really wears me out and I usually hit a slump right after that.

Extremely low, and as a former Skadden attorney, I'm surprised to hear it. We didn't have a minimum when I was there eons ago, but corporate associates averaged 2400ish at that time.
