The OFFICIAL 2007 Boston Red Sox Thread (1 Viewer)

 from the game wrap last night
...Ortiz, who clubbed a pair of doubles to give him 50 for the season. What does it mean for a man who last year hit 54 home runs to hit the half-century mark in two-baggers a year later? "You have to run a lot," quipped Ortiz.
...But the Red Sox finally grabbed the momentum and kept it in the bottom of the sixth. Leadoff man Pedroia again was a catalyst, smashing a solo homer to left. Ramirez walked and Ortiz doubled to left, setting up Lowell for yet another RBI opportunity. The third baseman did not disappoint, smacking a two-run single to left. Ortiz had just one complaint. "Mikey, he's been putting it together," said Ortiz. "All I asked him was, 'Man, can you go deep so I can stop running?'"

Beckett pitches tonight, and the Yankees 5 ERA rookie savior goes against Kazmir. The moons look well-aligned for a clinch tonight...and for just that reason, it probably won't happen.

I am going Sat, so I hope they clinch tomorrow, and unveil the flag Sat in pre-game

God the Yankee anti-jinxing has been phenomenal all year

The Sox have announced that Buchholz is getting shut down for the rest of the year due to arm fatigue and will not pitch in the post season.

I'm not so sure the Buchholz "arm fatigue" diagnosis isn't bs, makes it easy to justify not pitching him beyond the predetermined innings threshold- takes the heat off the brass. Just last week I read somewhere hat his arm was the freshest of any on the staff, forget who it was who said it. I have no problem with their motives, I just think it's nonsense.

With tonight's events I believe that the Sox have the #1 seed. ESPN lists Schilling as our starter for Sunday. Will we go with other pitchers since the game is now meaningless? Or does Schilling need some work before the playoffs begin?

I'll hang up and listen to your answer.

Tavarez is starting the meaningless last game. The Sox also opted to have the longer first round series with an extra day off in the middle, meaning the Yanks/Indians have to play the more compressed first round series.

Red Sox just need 6 of 11 to wrap up the best record in the AL. I have complete confidence they will do that.
 Red Sox are 90-61, with 11 games left...Cleveland and Anaheim are both 88-62, with 12 games left...To "wrap up" best record the Sox would have to go either 10-1 or 11-0 (depending on tiebreakers I don't feel like researching), since Anaheim and Cleveland can both obviously get to a maximum of 100 wins...
I was not referring to 'theoretical'...Neither team will go 10-1, or 9-2. Sox win both tie-breakers so both teams would need to pull ahead of them
I don't think theoretical means what you think it means...
how about 'statistical'If the Sox finish with 96 wins, either Cle or LAA would need to go 9-3 to overtake the lead. I don't see that happening for either team. (The Yankees would need to go 10-2 on their end, which also isn't happening). So, for me, 6 / 11 is the golden number.
:rolleyes:Sox finish with best record in baseball, first time since '46

 At some point in the last week I saw a stat on Papi being 11 for 23 (just under .500) over 6 or 7 days (I forget).

Anyone able to share the official version of why the Sox chose the long series? I was not able to find anything online regarding it.
Probably so they could go with a 3 man rotation:Tito indicated it will be a 3 man rotation, with Wakefield in the bullpen.Game 1: BeckettGame 2: MatsuzakaGame 3: SchillingGame 4: BeckettGame 5: Matsuzaka

Game 1: Beckett

Game 2: Matsuzaka

Game 3: Schilling

Game 4: Beckett

Game 5: Matsuzaka
I think it's better to keep it simple and not overanalyze things. Thus it's best to pick the long series. More rest means going with a 3-man rotation and more rest for the bullpen in case they are needed more than usual. Why give those advantages to Cleveland and NY? Sure, the long series might benefit Cleveland and help them beat NY, but if the Sox advance then who would you prefer the Sox face? Cleveland w/CC and Carmona? NY could still beat Cleveland in that scenario anyway for they are no slouch with 94 wins and a strong 2nd-half finish. I think the Sox did what's best for their own team instead of worrying how the short/long series would affect the other teams and that's the right path, IMO.
