The Official Kicker (K) Thread (4 Viewers)

and here are the final 5...

SF - Robbie Gould
Currently the oldest kicker in the NFL, Robbie is the 7th most accurate FG kicker at 86.6%.  Although those numbers do sound impressive, they kind of lose their luster when you realize he's only attempted 49 kicks from 50+ in his 249 game career.  To put it in perspective, Brandon McManus has 10 more attempts from 50+, and he is almost a decade younger.  No other kickers are currently on the roster, so the job is his by default at the moment.  One thing to consider before drafting Robbie - he has missed time in each of the last 3 years.  Wow, my writeup on Robbie sounds negative, huh?

SEA - Jason Myers
The 7-year NFL veteran is the sole Seahawks kicker as of this post.  Since joining SEA in 2019, he is one of only 3 kickers with at least 40 EP attempts in each of the last 3 seasons (Butker & Crosby).  With Russell Wilson out of the picture, Myers will likely have to increase his FG output to remain fantasy relevant.  He has yet to have 30 FG attempts as a Seahawk, so I find it a tough task for Myers to put up big numbers.  He will be a hard pass for me during my draft.

TB - Ryan Succop
I am just gonna say it - Ryan Succop is not good.  He is entering year 14, and has a career long of 54.  With such a noodle leg and only 11.5% of his FG attempts being from 50+, one would assume his career FG percentage would be impressive.  Well, at 83.0%, it's not.  Prior to joining the Bucs in 2020, he had a total of 1 fantasy-worthy season out of 11, and that was only K9.  His next highest was K15 as a rookie in 2009.  Ryan's 116 EP attempts over the last 2 seasons is tops in the league.  Jose Borregales, signed by TB in 2021 after going undrafted, is still in town.  Jose will instantly fly up the boards if he wins the battle.

TEN - Randy Bullock
Wanna see something weird?  Just compare the lifetime stats of Bullock and Succop.  They are basically the same guy.  FG%'s are 83.0/83.3, 50+ FG%'s are 50.0/52.5, and EP%'s are 95.2/96.1.  Bullock's fantasy finishes are 9, 16, 16, 19, 22, 25, 26, 28, and 35.  Succop's first 9 finishes are 9, 15, 16, 19, 21, 22, 28, 29, and 30.  Bullock's only fantasy-worthy season was K9 in his 8th year; Succop's only fantasy-worthy season out of his first 9 was K9 in his 9th year.  Caleb Shudak will be pushing Bullock, and whoever wins the battle will be at the mercy of Derrick Henry.

WAS - Joey Slye
Joey is the only kicker left on Washington's roster.  He has ties to Ron Rivera in Carolina, and I fully expect him to be the guy unless he stinks it up.  Is it just me, or does it seem like Joey's been in the league for 10 years?  He is known for his leg strength, but with a long of 56, many others have him beat.  I actually think he is an above average kicker, and the numbers back me up.  22.6% of his lifetime attempts have been from 50+, and only 2 kickers vying for starting positions in 2022 are higher (McPherson and McManus).  All that said, I have no intention of drafting the WAS kicker.

Hopefully others will update as time goes on.

I fully expect Borregalas to win the Tampa job. Stronger leg, 12 years younger and way cheaper. They protected him each week on their PS for the entire 2021 season. Will either end up elsewhere. The issue with kickers at this point.

The Green Bay Packers claimed kicked Gabe Brkic off waivers from the Vikings and waived kicker Dominik Eberle.

Shudak, who was off to a great start since being signed following the draft, is looking to unseat last year’s starter Randy Bullock, and has been neck-and-neck with him thus far. But Undrafted free agent kicker Caleb Shudak appeared to suffer a right leg injury after attempting a kick.

I was just looking through the preseason team projections on the site.  In particular, I was looking at team kickers.  All I can say is, if you choose to view by FBG consensus, the data looks a bit weird.  For example, if you look, you will see WAS is a top 10 team in terms of extra point attempts.  Does this seem strange to anyone else, or is it that all other teams are going for lots of 2 point conversions?

Andrew Jacas (SF), Andrew Wellock CAR), and Carlos Martinez (DAL) were kickers signed to compete in training camps back in 2006 and 2007.  None of the 3 ever saw the field for their teams and were all released before the start of the season.  Why am I talking about these guys?  Because if you do a mock on FantasyPros, they are K38, K40, and K43.  😀

Cowboys signed K Lirim Hajrullahu.

Hajrullahu is a CFL legend who played one regular season game for Dallas in 2021 when Greg Zuerlein tested positive for COVID-19. He made all five of his extra points and did not attempt a field goal. Hajrullahu also had a stint with Carolina in 2021, making four of his five field goal tries with the Panthers. Hajrullahu will likely compete with undrafted rookie Jonathan Garibay in Cowboys training camp, and the winner of the kicker battle should be fantasy viable in a Dallas offense that generated the seventh most field goal attempts in 2021.

Jaguars signed K Elliott Fry, formerly of the Falcons.

The team released kicker Andrew Mevis in a corresponding move. Fry opened the 2021 season on Atlanta's practice squad before finding his way to the Chiefs, Packers, and Bengals over a three-week stretch at the end of the season. He was only active for two games, split between the Chiefs and Bengals. With fellow journeyman kicker Ryan Santoso as his only competition in Jacksonville, Fry has a strong shot at landing a starting gig this year.

Updated kicker status, as of 10 August. Please correct if I am wrong, thank you.

ARI - Matt Prater
When I first posted 2 months ago, I included an article dated 26 January that suggested Prater could be released to save cap space. Well, since then, ARI has not brought in another kicker to compete that I know of. I assume he is good to go for 2022, and is currently the consensus K7 (all my current rankings will be from FantasyPros).

ATL - Younghoe Koo
Great job security, but may not get many chances with Mariota/Ridder at the helm. I think his K10 ranking is based on his talent and not on his situation.

BAL - Justin Tucker
Far and away the best kicker, and currently the top ranked. He has never finished outside the top 10, but incredibly, he has never finished first. Will 2022 be the year?

BUF - Tyler Bass
No competition for Bass, who is entering year 3. He has back-to-back seasons with 50+ EP's and is currently going off the board as K6.

CAR - Zane Gonzalez
Kicked well last year, and it seems CAR is happy to have him for 2022. Can Baker Mayfield move the offense enough to get Zane some points?

CHI - Cairo Santos
The most recent searches on the CHI kicking game have Cairo complaining about Soldier Field's grass, but no current competition. As K30, he is barley waiver fodder.

CIN - Evan McPherson
Currently ranked K2, opportunities should be plenty in 2022. I know he is only a 2nd year kicker, but unless his holder is Dan Marino, he will finish near the top again.

CLE - Cade York
CLE kicking duties are Cade's at the moment. I read he made 17/18 attempts in the first 9 days of camp, with his only miss coming from 58. He is interesting at K20.

DAL - Brett Maher
Well, the Jonathan Garibay experiment is over. Now the competition is between Lirim Hajrullahu and Maher. The winner of the camp battle will vault up the rankings.

DEN - Brandon McManus
Don't let his 81.9% FG rate fool you. Since 2015, 24.7% of his attempts are from 50+ (league average is 16.0%). Current rank is K12, but this may be his best year yet.

DET - Austin Seibert
Since I last posted, it seems Seibert has taken an edge over Riley Patterson, but it's still just the 2 of them doing battle. Neither kicker currently ranked in the top 30.

GB - Mason Crosby
Aldrick Rosas was brought in to compete with Gabe Brkic while Crosby rehabs. It's still Mason's job to lose, and he is currently ranked as K19.

HOU - Ka'imi Fairbairn
No kicker battle in Houston, but Fairbairn is better left off your fantasy team. HOU was one of only 4 teams in 2021 with under 30 EP & FG attempts.

IND - Rodrigo Blankenship
Rodrigo is currently ranked K16, but he is no sure thing. Justin Tucker predicted Jake Verity would be a starting kicker in the NFL, and it could happen this year.

JAX - Ryan Santoso
Most recent news has Santoso ahead of Elliott Fry. True story - Andrew Mevis was cut after he hit a 75-year old guy in the head with a missed FG.

KC - Harrison Butker
Butker's K4 ranking is no reflection of his finishes the last 2 years. He needs more FG attempts (28 in 2021 and 27 in 2020 ranked 21st and 19th).

LV - Daniel Carlson
Carlson has no camp competition, and has back-to-back finishes as THE K1. He is currently K3, but a case can be made for him to be K1.

LAC - Dustin Hopkins
The Chargers signed Dustin to a 3-yr, $9M contract. He is money under 50, but lacks a strong leg. UDFA James McCourt is battling, but it's Hopkins job to lose.

LAR - Matt Gay
Multiple sites have Cameron Dicker listed as well, but there is no kicker camp battle. From what I've read, Dicker is actually competing as a punter.

MIA - Jason Sanders
Jason has no competition and is poised to better last year's K21 finish. His K21 ranking for 2022 makes him undervalued to me.

MIN - Greg Joseph
Currently, Greg is the only kicker on the team and is ranked as K11. He finished K6 last year, and the offense seems to only have gotten better. Good value to me.

NE - Nick Folk
Nick just re-upped for $2M+ guaranteed, so I would say there really isn't much of a battle with Tristan Vizcaino. Folk is currently going as K9.

NO - Wil Lutz
Lutz is healthy and kicking well, meaning John Parker Romo may very well be a roster cut. Can Jameis make Lutz a top 10 kicker once again?

NYG - Graham Gano
Graham's only competition is the Giants offense. 17 EP attempts in 2021 - dead last, and 5 behind JAX. 20 teams doubled that, and 5 tripled it!

NYJ - Greg Zuerlein
Greg is ahead in the battle, but Eddy Pineiro is making it a race. All things equal, they paid Greg starter money, so you do the math.

PHI - Jake Elliott
Haven't heard any other names floating in PHI. Jake finished last year as K9, and has a real shot at more FG attempts in 2022. Currently K18? Comical.

PIT - Chris Boswell
4 years, $20.5M. After PIT made Boswell the NFL's highest paid kicker (tied with Tucker), do you think it's still a camp battle with Nick Sciba? Me either.

SF - Robbie Gould
Robbie has the job to himself. He is accurate, but not strong-legged. He is currently ranked K14, but I am struggling to place him at the moment.

SEA - Jason Myers
He's all alone on the kicker depth chart, and with a current ranking of K29, he should be left alone on your draft day as well.

TB - Ryan Succop
Hoping for Jose Borregales to unseat the overrated veteran. Succop's going K8 at the moment, but he's JAG in a perfect spot.

TEN - Randy Bullock
Bullock is the sole healthy kicker for the Titans, as rookie Caleb Shudak is on the PUP. I just giggled, when I realized I said Bullock was healthy.

WAS - Joey Slye
Joey signed a 2-year deal, and there is no camp battle in WAS. He has a strong leg and is currently K22. I think he makes a decent streamer.

Updated kicker status, as of 10 August. Please correct if I am wrong, thank you.

DET - Austin Seibert
Since I last posted, it seems Seibert has taken an edge over Riley Patterson, but it's still just the 2 of them doing battle. Neither kicker currently ranked in the top 30.

Agreed that neither one should be on your radar rn. Seibert had the only FGA in PS G1, although I feel like Patterson is more consistent, leg strength/depth of Kickoffs will probably favor Austin.

I will assume everyone knows who a team kicker is if there is no battle going on (i.e. Justin Tucker), and will only discuss teams with unknowns:

DET - Austin Seibert is still in a fierce battle with Riley Patterson. This seems to be the most contested kicker battle going on. Just so you know, Austin is winning at the moment.
GB - Mason Crosby swears he is ready for week 1, but the Packers aren't so sure, and still have Ramiz Ahmed as insurance. Sadly, I think this is a case of a relative who has worn out his welcome, but the Packers are just being nice. Crosby's leash is alot longer than it should be, and at this point it's all about breaking longevity records.
IND - Rodrigo Blankenship finally showed some leg, hitting a few from the mid 50's. Jake Verity didn't fare so well, and is now losing ground. A FF spot worth following.
NE - Nick Folk just re-upped for $2M+ guaranteed, so I would say there really isn't much of a battle with Tristan Vizcaino, but he is still hanging around.
NYG - Graham Gano - he did suffer a concussion, but it's his job when healthy. Gano is underrated in my book.
TB - Hoping for Jose Borregales to unseat the overrated veteran Ryan Succop, but it hasn't happened yet.
TEN - Randy Bullock has the job for now, as the Titans placed Caleb Shudak on the PUP list.

IND - Rodrigo Blankenship finally showed some leg, hitting a few from the mid 50's. Jake Verity didn't fare so well, and is now losing ground. A FF spot worth following.

I know Blankenship had injury issues last year, but in 2020 he was 32 for 37 on FG attempts. Its a hazy memory, but he had an excellent season when healthy from what I remember.
He is definitely starter worthy, and his job as a Colt should have never been in doubt.
And thats the extent of my kicker pre-season knowledge. :bowtie:

Could it be the IND staff showing respect to Justin Tucker, the greatest kicker of all time, who suggested Jake Verity was starter-worthy? Perhaps they have always known they were going with Rodrigo?

Blankenship got a bit of a slight cult following.
I know he was selling his own clothing etc. (Had to do with his glasses) He was pretty popular for a bit, and the little I knew he was described as a down to Earth guy.
I'm not a big fan of kickers in that sense, but I did like this Rodrigo Blankenship kid.
Quick Google search and he indeed has his own shop, with shirts, socks etc, with his "respect the specs" slogan and his shirts that state "It's Good" are pretty cool.

First year ever I drafted Justin Tucker, Based on my luck with kickers, lets all be prepared for a finish outside of top 10 for the first time ever.

Browns rookies Cade York, David Bell keep impressing: 3 thoughts from preseason game against Bears

Excerpt:

1. Cade York putting together the puzzle

It won’t be long before the hottest show in town is the Browns’ pregame warmups.
Rookie kicker Cade York continued to elicit “oohs” and “ahhs” on Saturday night, especially dazzling the fans who showed up early for the preseason finale. He nailed a 70-yard kick going toward the Dawg Pound end of the stadium, and then a few kicks later made a 60-yarder kicking at the opposite end of the stadium.

During the game, while York missed his first FG attempt, a 58-yarder that was wide left in the first quarter. In the second quarter he nailed a 57-yarder to get Cleveland on the board. With three seconds remaining in the half, he also nailed a 46-yarder that looked like it would have been good from 60.

It was a continuation of a pretty strong preseason start for the rookie with a monster leg.

Last week at home against the Eagles, York made two FGs (50 and 19 yards) and both PATs. In Jacksonville in the first preseason game, he made a 31-yard field goal and all three of his PATs. He missed a 55-yarder.

So far, his only misses have come from 55-plus yards -- a not-too-shabby mark.

It’s especially intriguing to know that York is described as a bullheaded player. Kicking in FirstEnergy Stadium will continue to have more challenges as the weather worsens, but York continues to prove that his leg strength is for real. Even though some patience may be required as he’s only 21 years old, York seems up to the challenge of solving this puzzle and has plenty of field goals in front of him.

Time for an update for every team...

ARI - Matt Prater hasn't had any worthy competition this offseason
ATL - Younghoe Koo could be a stud on the right team, but is ATL it?
BAL - Justin Tucker is the GOAT and only he decides when he is done
BUF - Tyler Bass is in no danger of losing his job, and is only 25 years old
CAR - Eddy Pineiro is currently the kicker to own in CAR with Zane Gonzalez on season-ending IR
CHI - Cairo Santos has held the job, not that anyone really cares
CIN - Evan McPherson made waves as a long-legged rookie stud
CLE - Cade York is hopefully the next Phil Dawson for the Browns
DAL - Cowboys cut Brett Maher, but it's only a joke; he's the starter
DEN - Brandon McManus hasn't had competition in the last 8 years
DET - Austin Seibert teased folks until the end with his kicker battle
GB - Mason Crosby fighting to keep consecutive game streak alive
HOU - Ka'imi Fairbairn has phantom injury that no one will say
IND - I prefer kickers with 20/20 sight, but Rodrigo Blankenship will do
JAC - Riley Patterson quickly went from camp battle loser to winner
KC - Harrison Butker hasn't been top 10 in 2 yrs, but does anyone care?
LV - Daniel Carlson finished K1 back-to-back, now adds Davante, hmm?
LAC - Dustin Hopkins wants to kick, but LAC likes going for it on 4th down
LAR - Matt Gay sucked in 2019 as TB's rookie, but has flourished in LA
MIA - Jason Sanders has been a staple since 2018 and MIA is quite happy
MIN - Greg Joseph has bounced around, but his place in MIN is solidified
NE - Nick Folk is old and washed up, but still performing; why not?
NO - Wil Lutz has alot of name recognition, but alot of uncertainty too
NYG - Graham Gano likely to start week 1 after concussion; good leg
NYJ - Greg Zuerlein's opportunities will be few and far between
PHI - Jake Elliott from State Farm could better his K9 finish from 2021
PIT - Chris Boswell is studly in Heinz Field - imagine him dome kicking
SF - Robbie Gould is old and washed up, but still on a decent offense
SEA - Jason Myers is best left as waiver wire fodder, but a good kicker
TB - Ryan Succop beat Borregales, but if anyone were to lose their job...
TEN - Randy Bullock held off the youngsters and kept his job for 2022
WAS - Joey Slye seems older than he really is. I think he is underrated

As a perennial kicker week to week streamer, who looks for a run lol started out with Dan Carlson on one team, and Brandon McManus on another. Dropped Rodrigo Blankenship for McManus just now lol. I always have good intentions to stay put, seems like it always ends up streaming. McManus at 80% + and kicks a lot of 50+ yarder for bonus points and more risky kicks, which means his 80% + average is actually better than that, especially under 50. The big leg gives bonus points. What's not to like about Carlson? Could end up being #1.

Cowboys promoted K Brett Maher from the practice squad.

The move was a formality after Maher won Cowboys’ kicking duties in camp. Maher's second stint with the storied franchise brings solid expected fantasy utility kicking for a team likely to finish the season amongst the top 10 in total offense. A top-12 finish is well within his range of outcomes, keeping Maher on the fantasy radar in all formats that still use kickers.

The key, as we’ve learned over the years in this or similar threads, is finding the FGA king. It always seems so obvious at year end, who didn’t we see that coming. I’ve yet to find a consistent methodology for kickers.

I have sound guidelines that usually pick good ones, but I rarely have the flavor of the year who outscores everyone. My predictive ability is totally random.

The last few years I outsourced it Reddit (dude there was killing it for 3-4 years.) Post-pandemic he took it offline to his own premium site, has a ginormous following. His public info is limited to the Top 8 for the week.

Guess I’m back to guessing again this week.

*************

I like Maher & Lutz this week.

Owned Prater & switched him out for Blankenship. There’s nothing wrong with the ARI K he should be owned in every league; just got bored & decided I had too many Cardinals (QB/-WR-RB2.)

A few sites liked Rodrigo and I like his glasses (I’m a Clark Kent style guy as well.)

One year I had my daughter pick - she was about 7 or 8. She just wanted to see the headshot and then she would pick the one she thought looked like you could trust. Man I had a great run that year - double digits like 6 weeks in a row.

I like McManus as well. Seemingly high-powered offense with altitude kicks.

We’ll see what happens for the first few weeks.

Debating Lutz, Elliott, or McManus for this week.

The one I am intrigued by going forward is Cade York for Cleveland, though it may be sloppy conditions on the east coast today. I want to see how well Cleveland can move the ball, and weather will definitely be a factor for him later in the year, but supposedly he drills 70-yarders in practice.

A fourth round pick used on a K these days tends to get your attention.

Right there with you, across the board. Not sure how many FGA York wil get, but potentially this years McPherson.

Love Lutz this year as he’s healthy again. MvManus had a good leg but inconsistent & I feel like Denver is gonna be very successful in the RZ, and he’ll have low FGA. Total guess, who knows. Elliott is money.

Drafted York in the 3rd round of our rookie draft (an IDP/K only round in our league). Still pretty rare for a K to go in our rookie draft. Has only happened 2 or 3 times in 16 years.

Love the leg and talent but don't trust the conservative Cleveland offense with Brissett. I guess they'll get stopped for FG's but they also won't be in FG territory as much as I'd prefer. In our keeper league he is a flier and I have 3 years of team control. But don't think he'd be a priority as a weekly streamer or likely top 10 scoring K this season

58-yarder to take the lead
Won the game. Clutch... down the middle with 10 yards to spare.

York's leg is legit. Can hit them from 50+. The offense will be the issue. But who knows? Maybe it will be like Nick Folk a year ago and he'll kick a ton of FG's because the offense stalls in the red zone.

We had 9 kickers score double digits WK1 in our format, and 7 of them were unrostered:
  • Younghoe Koo ATL 19 pts - hit two 50+ and another 40+, was a monster K two years ago
  • Cade York CLE 16 pts - rookie was highlighted many times here
  • Chris Bowell PIT 14 pts - we always avoid the Heinz Field kickers but he's solid
  • Riley Patterson JAX 11 pts - was a solid 13/14 his rookie year, not a big leg but accurate
  • Will Lutz NO 10 pts - game winning kick
  • Jason Sanders MIA 10 pts
  • Ka'imi Fairbairn HOU 10 pts
Of these, love Koo, York and Lutz.

My Roddrigo for Prater Saturday swap worked out, but I have no issue treating kickers like socks.

Maybe the most exciting (?) kicker day in nfl history today :P

But ya, some massive numbers from some of those guys this week, and some horrible misses from a pure football point of view.

Colts waived K Rodrigo Blankenship.

Not only did he miss a 42-yard overtime field goal attempt against the Texans in Week 1, he also booted two different kickoffs out of bounds. The Colts worked out Josh Lambo and Matthew Wright today. Blankenship, 25, will join the kicker tryout circuit.

Anyone getting nervous about Butker for Thursday night ? I cannot fathom keeping two kickers--in week 2 no less, but if he is ruled out on Thursday then I will take a 0 from my kicker this week (if I don't make a move by Wednesday night).

oh wow

K11 in fantasy last week (9 points - not great but lot better than the Prater 1 I originally had in the lineup

Consensus Week 1 Kicker Rankings
  1. Tucker | BAL
  2. McPherson | CIN
  3. Carlson | LV
  4. Gay | LAR
  5. Bass | BUF
  6. Butker | KC
  7. Succop | TB
  8. McManus | DEN
  9. Gould | SF
  10. Hopkins | LAC
  11. Colts Kicker | IND
Presumably all of these guys are rostered. Just thought it was interesting that Blankenship was not really thought of as someone in danger of losing their job.

Which is fine, last week was a great week for unrostered kickers (also a terrible week for 4th quarter misses & silly HC decisions but let's keep it positive.)

My favorites this week (I have to replace Rodrigo):

Boswell | Steelers (NE)
Koo | Falcons (@LAR)
Lutz | Saints (TB)
Patterson | Jaguars (IND)
Sanders | Miami (@ BAL)
York | Browns (NYJ)

I can no longer respect the specs either.

Some of the teams on this list may be prone stalled drives and happy to take three points. Solid list.

Harrison Butker (ankle) did not participate in Tuesday's practice.

Butker made a 54-yard field goal after sustaining the injury in the first quarter against the Cardinals, but S Justin Reid handled some of the kickoffs and extra points. Back-to-back missed practices put him firmly in questionable territory even if he did successfully play on the injury on Sunday. The Chiefs added Matt Ammendola to their practice squad, an indication Butker could miss Thursday.

Anyone getting nervous about Butker for Thursday night ? I cannot fathom keeping two kickers--in week 2 no less, but if he is ruled out on Thursday then I will take a 0 from my kicker this week (if I don't make a move by Wednesday night).

Harrison Butker (ankle) did not participate in Tuesday's practice.

That sucks most leagues can wait until kickoff, that's what I'm planning on doing. Tough call if have to make by Wednesday night.
