The Official Kicker (K) Thread (1 Viewer)

Just so you know, I didn't write that line. I simply copied and pasted

I know, I was definitely thinking as I wrote it "now that's some world class rotoworld-style sloppiness there." I could have made that more clear by saying something like what are they talking about instead of parsing your quote - which kind of makes it appear like it was an original thought from you.

My bad, didn't mean to make you look like a wanker there, friend. I'll try to be a little more self aware going forward; thanks for pointing out my carelessness.
For as bad as we think DET has been at picking kickers since 2021, they have combined to kick for 85.2%.

yeah but not too many from long range (boy I miss Prater)

in most leagues, 40+ is four points & 50+ is five points

the Lions have rarely gotten the premium positions right, but they’ve always had good kickers
  • Errol Mann (69-76) 636 pts
  • Eddie Murray (80-91) 1113
  • Jason Hanson (92-12) 2150
  • Matt Prater (14-20) 768
That’s 48/52 seasons with a solid top ten / occasional pro bowl pickers

Like Bobby said, the lack of long range kicks does affect fantasy. Throw in an aggressive HC and that's why even such a good offense hasn't resulted in that many kicker points.

Wow, you ain't kidding! Last year Prater made 9 FG's of 50+. DET has had 6 different kickers since he left, and they have combined for 4 from 50+ over the last 3 years.
A similar thing happened to Jake Elliott in 2022. Even though he has a strong leg, PHI was the 2nd highest scoring team, but he finished K19 because they were too busy scoring TD's.

Leagues may have to add additional point category for 60-69 yarders and even 70+ kicks now with Bates in the league. I predict Bates will try a 68 to 70 yarder at some point this season as the last play of a half.

I'm reading that Bates is struggling with accuracy issues. Since Badgley went out for the year with a torn hamstring, I haven't heard anyone else competing with Bates, but someone will surface very soon. A quick peek at current free agents and I think we will be hearing Randy Bullock's name. He is only 34 and is a career 83.4% FG kicker.

Yeah, with a week like that, DET will surely be on the phone.

Seems like the Lions are trying to build up Bates confidence by not signing anyone.

OR...they've just been in scramble mode, signing lineman and LBs and a 4th QB because of injuries. In 13 practices and 1 PS game, they have had 7 season ending injuries. At Sunday's practice, 16 guys were out with various issues.

Anyway....from Justin Rogers, things are going better for young Mr Bates.

Allen Park — The waters have been choppy for Detroit Lions kicker Jake Bates his first few weeks back on an NFL roster, but for the moment, he appears to have righted the ship.

After making his lone field goal attempt in the team’s preseason opener Thursday night, a 53-yarder in soggy conditions, he turned around and buried a 64-yard effort with distance to spare to close out Sunday’s practice.

“Yeah, it feels good,” Bates said when asked how the two kicks help with confidence. “I think we have a great operation. Regardless of who the snapper is, I know they're going to give a good snap, and Jack (Fox) is really, really good holder. So it's up to me to do my job, and each day just get better and better.”

Despite being unproven, on both the macro and micro levels, the Lions have put uncommon belief in Bates, who signed in June, shortly after NFL teams were permitted to add players from UFL rosters.

Remember, Bates started as a soccer player and only served as a kickoff specialist in college. It wasn’t until the UFL that he attempted a field goal in a game. But during that opportunity with the Michigan Panthers, he wowed with his leg strength and comfort level in big moments. He put himself on the map with a 64-yard game-winner in the team’s season-opener, and he maintained relevancy throughout the campaign, finishing 17-for-22 on the year, with five additional makes from 50 yards and beyond.

Coincidentally, it was the 64-yarder to end Sunday’s practice that stabilized what must have felt like increasingly shaky ground under him nearing the end of the third week of training camp. Prior to the preseason game, he’d had a couple rough days, missing several kicks during a practice in Allen Park before continuing to battle inconsistency during a joint session with the New York Giants.

But the Lions’ support hasn’t wavered since kicking incumbent Michael Badgley suffered a season-ending injury, leaving Bates as the only kicker on the roster.

“We told him after the scrimmage the other day, 'Man, we're sticking with you. We're going to give you a chance to grow here. Let's see how you respond,’” Lions coach Dan Campbells said.

Not every team gives players that kind of leash to work through their struggles, especially a young player at a critical position, but that’s been part of the cultural identity of the Lions under Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes. And while Bates is appreciative of that approach, he understands he can’t rely on it.

“It feels good knowing the staff wants you here, but it's my job to do well and perform when I need to perform,” he said. “That's what I've been trying to hammer to myself; each day show up, each day be better than I was before, and keep taking stripes so I'm ascending, not plateauing.”

When Bates has a down day, like he did last week, he leans on his support system. That starts with his friends and family and extends to the relationships he’s cultivated n the building, from Fipp to teammates Scott Daly, Hogan Hatten and Fox, the roster’s other specialists. From there, it boils down to having confidence in his own ability, honing in on and improving upon the mechanics he’s been refining in preparation for this opportunity.

“It's a lot of hard work and never giving up,” Bates said. “That's all it is. There's always things to improve on, and I feel like I've always did a good job of consistently finding those things, fine tuning what I can do to become a better kicker. That's the main thing is to keep getting better and not giving up whenever the days are rough.”

The way things are tracking, Bates will have to the end of the month to maintain his recent momentum and prove he deserves the job going into the regular season. That’s the limit of the leash. The 53-man roster needs to be established Aug. 27, and the Lions have shown a willingness to come out of cut day with zero kickers on the roster, opting to shop the waiver wire for a better option.

@Faust by my count that is something close 29 Lions K/Jake Bates posts out of the last 34. The McManus DV generated 4 replies, and you posted 1 about the Butker extension. Should I request SaintsInDome2006 update the thread title The complete history of Detroit Lions Placekicker woes?

Putting final touches on draft prep. Any surprises at pk this year?

FBG's list is very current, to include Riley Patterson being dumped by Washington, which was announced on Rotoworld only 2 hrs ago.

Aubrey might be getting regular shots at 60s regardless of the time on the clock, 70-75 yard attempts at the end of the half.

Packers waive Anders Carlson.

Veteran Greg Joseph is likely to be kept over Alex Hale
  • K7 in 2021
  • K19 in 2022; 6 missed PAT
  • K25 IN 2023
43/44 in his career inside 40, but 90.1% PAT (28th amongst active kickers) is vexing.

FG % is 22nd on the active Ks list, but at least he has a big leg - 16/28 on 50+ the last 3.

Joseph has been no better than Carlson during their training camp battle. There's a good likelihood the Packers are keeping a close eye on kickers today in addition to all the other cuts everyone is watching for.

Packers signed Brayden Narveson. He'll get a good look here and could easily win the job in Green Bay.

And just released Joesph.

Just a random note, but, I have Chase McLaughlin in dynasty, and he is way down most rankings and projections, but I don't know that there are many that I would take over him. Granted, it's important to note that our league gives 5 bonus points for every 50+ yard FG made, which is a lot. And this kid nails his 50+ yarders ... Probably just a fluke early in his career, but I'll take it while it lasts.

I have him as my kicker as well this season in our 12 team re-draft league and I'm pretty excited about it.

havaen't had to play kicker roulette in awhile, but here we go. Had the ATL kicker. Looking to move him for someone else now. Flagging this thread to find it easier.

Reichard available to replace Koo? I suppose that is mostly trusting the MIN O/playcalling over ATL and Cousins <100.

Think I would rank the following (likely) WW kickers above Reichard:
  • Prater ARI
  • Bates DET
  • Boswell PIT
  • McLaughlin TB
  • Karty LAR
  • Little JAX
Great list - I imagined some of these guys were probably taken. Bates of course may not get as many FGA so he'd be last for me (after Reichard too).

Is Tucker worth holding? Feels like his long field goals are shot now since last season. Hard to drop though for someone better considering it’s the Raiders this week. Just hope it’s not 6 ****ing touchdowns…

Any sleeper kickers this week?

I know...random number generators.

I'm one of those guys who drops their kicker every week. Usually a top ranked kicker is always available on waivers. Not this week.

Thinking Prater at home against LAR. Could be a high scoring affair and AZ just clunky enough on offense maybe Prater gets more opps than usual.

Bates also available but DET so damn efficient.

I'm looking at those 2 as well, Lions should score decent amount but do go for 4th downs more than most teams. Also considering Mcloughlin but don't love being 7 point underdogs or Dicker but that could be very low scoring.

Yeah, you're right. DET always goes for it on fourth.

Considering J. Myers @NE. Could see NE D toughening up in the redzone. However, that D is good so SEA may not be able to move the ball that well.

Prater indoors with a high O/U and a big leg.

Bates (DET) had a decent day. Not bad considering they always say "Lions go for it on 4th more than any other team". Maybe today they just had more 4th-and-long's than usual and didn't have the option. He finished with 3 FGs and 1 XP, would have had a shot at a short 4th FG at the end of the half, but, DET got a penalty on the spike to stop the clock that ran off the time.
