The One Food to Try in Every State (1 Viewer)

i always thought sweringens al gen up in rhinelander had the best fish fry i ever had but that may be because some of the best times i ever had were fishing up there with my family when everyone was still alive take that to the bank brohans

You got me beat on 43 years, but I grew up there and lived there until 27.  I don't know what else you would choose over Skyline/Cincinnati but it certainly wouldn't be those buckeye things.  They are more of just a quaint food item (since it's Ohio) rather than some signature state dish.  What else, White Castle?
I guess you could but it's a chain so I don't know that it qualifies and I also know that there are plenty of folks in OH that have no clue what a White Castle is.

Chili it is I guess

Hate that Skyline chili is always the go to for OH in these things because they throw some chocolate in the mix and spread it over spaghetti.

Stop this disinformation immediately.

It's basically a Greek pasta sauce.  And yes it uses a variety of spices common in Greek dishes, such as cinnamon and cloves.

We know it's not actually chili.  We just call it that to piss you off.

I figured Missouri would go KC Barbecue or St. Louis Italian.  Looks like we threw Kansas a bone and let them have the BBQ.

Toasted Ravioli on the Hill is no joke.  Good stuff.
Yeah the best BBQ seems to be on the Missouri side. Back here in KS Mennonite country I would go with Bierocks or chicken and dumplings.

how are those runzas? Do small places have them?

I have seen the chain places "Runza" but never eaten there
I don't think I've ever seen one in KS. Interwebs tell me there's one in Lawrence but I've never been there.

I see them at mostly mom and pop places. Some schools have Bierock sales for fundraisers.

I guess Chimichanga could be OK for AZ, but the problem is first, every chimi tastes great, it’s not that hard when you deep fry a tortilla. Second, a lot of really good Mexican places don’t even have fryers, so you’ll miss out on a lot of great food going with a chimi.

The correct answer is a taco in a corn tortilla. Any taco, because there are so many great choices.

I lived in AZ (chimichangas at El Charro in Tucson), MN (Juicy Lucy), and PA (cheesesteak) and spent plenty of time at Ellis Island casino at 3:00 AM (steak and eggs)  as described for NV and believe the link nails the states I can speak to.

However, and I cannot this enough, the picture of the "Philly Cheesesteak" (it's just called a "cheesesteak") is an abomination as no good cheesesteak ever has peppers on it.

Have you been to the El Charro in Tucson as referenced? It is really on another level.

Otherwise, I don't really disagree with your taco with a corn tortilla suggestion. I'd also be good with a hatch green chile burger or a torta.

I've had some pretty good fish fries in Wisconsin myself...

.. which is good because most other things there are bland. 🤣

I have not, so I guess I spoke a little out if line. I will give it a try at some point.

As much as I love hatch green chiles, I think that’s more of a New Mexico thing than an Arizona thing. But Richardson’s is one of the best restaurants in town so…

Yeah I saw after I typed it that the hatch green chile burger went to New Mexico. Hard to argue with that.

BTW I'm in Prescott this week if you're around.

I may be. In Chicago now but heading back Wednesday. I may make it up there. How long are you there?

Guessing this may be honda but I love stuff like this.

The One Food to Try in Every State

Agree? Disagree?

If disagree, what should it be?

DISAGREE

Krispy Kreme for NC seems like a total cop-out.  Why would I go to NC when I have a KK 5 miles down the road?

Yup...WTF.

Feels like some BBQ options would have made sense for a few of these states.

Getting warm.

At least it wasn't Krispy Kreme....jeez.

Yeah...brutal.  At least i found out about the Krispy Kreme Challenge race.  5 miles, one hour, 12 donuts at the halfway point.  Right up my alley.

Plus North Carolina has their own flavor of BBQ- so I would have expected that.

Warmer yet.

Awful choice.

This guy gets it.

Not a terrible list.  I expected worse, but there were a few glaring mistakes.

  • NC - The Krispy Kreme choice is straight-up trolling
Surprised not to see ice cream not walk away with an win or two here as the primary.

Trolling is on point.

Good point.

Except for Krispy Kreme, apparently the best are in NC  :P

:finger:

Yeah, the KK choice is pretty bad. Eastern NC style whole hog BBQ would have been a great choice.

Winner.  Winner.  Chicken dinner.  @Desert_Power with the correct answer.

No. John's Roast Pork (JRP) is arguably better and their cheesesteak blows away the roast pork.
I've never had John's, but the DiNic's sandwich is magnificent and was voted best sandwich in America by Adam Richman!!

Some obvious improvements:

  • FL - Cuban sandwich
  • HI - Poke
  • IL - Chicago Dog (Portillo's) [man, I wish I could that here in Virginia...]
  • LA - Gumbo
  • NC - Eastern NC vinegar-style pulled pork
  • VA - Brunswich stew or oysters

rocky mountain oysters would have been perfect for montana, but oklahoma got them.

huckleberries are a good choice

or morels mushrooms

or elk jerky

or beef steak

or cutthroat trout

I would stack up a well done Maryland crab cake against just about any other food I can think of.

They are simple, easy to make, versatile, and delicious,  In fact, I'd go a step further and and say that blue crab is one of the best tasting foods on the planet.
