The "Red Area" (1 Viewer)

Topes

I am still thankful the old SNF is gone. Every day (even in the spring and summer) I have a fleeting thought of thanks for that mess being over.

I am still amused, though, when I think back to the "Red Area" talk on that show.

For those who do not recall, they (on-air personalities on SNF) referred to the area between the 20 yard line and the goal line as the "Red Area".

They analyzed it to death, and used on-screen graphics to show this or that about the "Red Area".

They behaved as though they had invented the concept of analyzing game play in this part of the field, as being different than play in the other 80 yards.

To put it bluntly, they behaved as though they had never heard the term "Red Zone" or known that it was one of the most common phrases in football punditry for decades. They behaved as though they had never seen the NFL's old magazine, "Red Zone". They behaved like ignoramuses.

I still have to wonder, though, whether it was all just shtick. At the time, I wondered, as well. I became convinced it could not be, based on the way they used the term with consistent deadpan hubris, never half-opening an angle for a quarter-wink. As the show recedes into memory, however, I still can't help but begin to wonder wither Theismann wasn't a comic genius, and I was left out of the joke.

Or were they just idiots?
