The Basics: 50 round song draft. Snake draft for as long as practical.

Official Metaphor: A Seeburg 100R jukebox to play fifty 45 rpm singles (the little records with the big holes).   It costs ten cents for one play, three songs for a quarter.  All proceeds go to the PSF bail fund.

Draft Scarcity Gimmick:  All songs you draft must come from different years, e.g. you can only have one song from 1971.  Eligible years span the earliest recorded music until today. If a single was released in a different year than its album release, either year may be used.  The same spirit of the rules applies to live versions or tracks included in artist's rarites collections.

Free Plays:  To make things easier for people who don't listen to current music, there will be five Free Plays made available during the draft to enable drafters to pick a second song from a specified year.  After rounds 15, 20, 25 and 30, we'll roll dice between the most popular years (i.e. years with the most selected songs) to choose the Free Play year.  For example, if 1969 is the Free Play, all drafters will be able to choose a second song from that year.  The Free Play must be used before it's time for the next roll.  A year rolled for the Free Play is eliminated from consideration from future Free Play rounds.

The first Free Play roll after round #15 will involve the three most popular years (including ties) from the draft up to that point.  The next three Free Play rolls after rounds #20, 25 and 30 will be modified to include the top five, seven and ten years respectively.

After round 40, all drafters get one individual Free Play to double up on a year of their choosing.

Free Plays are optional.  If you want to be a :nerd: and draft songs from 50 different years instead of 45, be my guest.

Song Eligibility:  You can pick hits, deep cuts, personal favorites, whatever. You know what makes a great jukebox song.  Due to technological limitations of 7" 45 rpm records, songs cannot exceed six minutes in length. If you must have a song that clocks in slightly longer, it'll probably be allowed.

B-sides:  Where applicable, drafters are entitled to the B-side of the original 45 rpm single release of the song (Extra tracks from 12-inch singles, EPs, etc. are not eligible). This is totally optional and must be declared at the time of the selection.  The B-sides are in addition the drafter's 50 selections.  Discogs is the authoritative source for B-side information. 

Mulligans:  No mulligans permitted until the end of the draft. The only exception is if a drafter takes over somebody else's team during the draft, he or she gets three mulligans immediately.

Reboots:  If you think of a better theme, you can discard your entire draft and start over at any time before the end of round #5.

Themes:  This format is tailor made for themes but they're not required.  You can place your jukebox in your basement and fill it with your favorite songs.  Or you can build a bar around it like an Animal Cross house.  Knock yourself out and have fun with it.

Since the gang's all here, we'll probably run the mid-year 2020 draft in this thread concurrently with the juke draft.  

We'll talk about that later for obvious reasons. :tfp:

In.  Also Mr R is considering the idea.  The insane bank merger hours seem to be over.  Having said that, he started work at 4PM, and he may not finish until after 6AM.  The overtime is amazing.

I think going only one song per year makes it more fun and interesting. Since we can go back to the 1950s I don't think anyone should really have an issue and can find a song for every year. Just my opinion and I'm ok either way but just throwing it out there.

Personally I think I'll go 1970-2020.

 
I’ll play if you’re ok with someone who hasn’t done music drafts on this site before participating. I’ve done music drafts on another site so I know the drill.

Points of clarification for others

1.  Years do not have to be contiguous. 

2.  Starting year can be earlier than the 1950s.  If you want to draft Swing or Bing or Caruso, that's fair game.

Not that I expect to do this, but can we take more than one song by the same artist if they are from different years?

I think I know my theme when pressed. It's going to be songs that either use a prominent sample or songs that have been prominently sampled within another song. This is for timscochet, who loves the aural collage art that is sampling. If we go two songs at a time, that would also provide me with opportunities for...

We're not doing two picks at a time this time around.  I think it would get too chaotic with the 2020 first half draft.

What about a song that is split Part 1 on side A and Part 2 on side B?  Would that violate the 6 minute rule?

You're entitled to both with the B-side rule.  If the combined version is the only one available on Spotify, you can exceed six minutes.

When I think of two part singles, I think of the Isley Brothers.  I checked them out on Spotify and a lot of them are right around the six minute mark.

Yep, not mandatory, just some of the drafters like to nerd out a little and go with a theme.   

Sometimes I try to do one just to attempt to force myself into taking different things once in awhile.  I am trying to think of a theme here especially after seeing how close my Jukebox draft and our last DID draft was as far as bands and songs.    

One limiting factor for me is the 50 different years of music though, so I am still trying to decided if I will be able to do any sort of theme with that format.  

 
It would be fun have a lot of local flavor to the jukeboxes.  I am for sure not up on WI music enough to tackle that though.  

 
Themes are optional so revealing the theme is optional too.

Speaking from experience from jukebox #1, don't make your theme too limiting because 50 songs is a lot.  A jukebox isn't a mixtape, it's meant to be shuffled rather than listened to in strict sequence.  You're aiming for a vibe rather than a flow, which is my new credo.

I was thinking Detroit but I feel like there are some long stretches without anything too interesting and then when it's good, there is too much to choose from.
