The Rise and Fall of ESPN (1 Viewer)

Yes, it shouldnt be a surprise.  Greeny is not some crazy celebrity that is going to pull eyes from other networks and the show is just a hectic vanilla combination of Mike and Mike and SC.  Its totally useless.  I thought all along they were billing this show as a GMA type that would use sports as the anchor but venture into current events and other topical things.

Yeah, but the second ESPN drifts out of the sports sphere many people freak out.

I don't think it's this in itself. It's that in many cases, the political talk has been on a show billed as sports coverage (like sportscenter), which then devolved into politics. If you have a show that ESPN tell us straight up "this will cover politics (as well as some sports)" such is the case with Get Up, I think you instantly get rid of the outrage. I don't see anyone complaining about Get Up's material they cover, they are just trolling the ratings.

I mean the ratings are hilariously bad. It's not really even trolling if it is like this

it doesnt have to be politics just current events.

How is any platform of espn, tv or radio, still on the air. They cover NOTHING but the worst sport in existence the NBA. Seriously, how do people watch that garbage. Made the mistake of letting my xm radio expire & what do I hear on espn radio...Stephen a smith... good lord how does that clown have a job. There's no way he could name 1 athlete from any sport other than basketball. But that goes for anyone on their network.

NBA is really the only sport with any sustainable growth right now.  I mean on a market cap basis it is perhaps on track to overtake the NFL.  The playoff product is better, the stars are more likeable and stay stars for longer.

Of all the things ESPN did, focusing on NBA could probably be one of the few good calls they made in recent history.

Did anyone catch the F bomb she dropped in I believe #8 of top plays?

ETA end of play 9 she stumbles through it then says “F-Ed that one up”.  :lmao:

If she isn’t drunk she is on drugs.

Who you talking about?

You bumped a 2 moth old conversation acting like we know who you're talking about.

Please elaborate as much as you can.
How much can I elaborate? He travels for sports events typically college and he just had a load of staff he typically works with canned. He has no idea what he’ll be doing this fall, Mt. Union games or the Sugar Bowl. I’ll say this is maybe the third time he’s reported this kind of thing but he seems a bit more worried this time.

Gotcha. Seems like they keep turning things over left and right, and keep starting new shows, in essence throwing #### against the wall to see what will stick.  I knew they were a lost cause once they cancelled a classic show like Sports Reporters, while awful crap like Highly Questionable remains on the air.  PTI is the only ESPN show I ever watch anymore (aside from live events I am forced to watch like MNF), and that is only if I think to DVR it if I want to watch Tony and Michael talk about a big game or something that just took place. I don't even bother with Around the Horn anymore.  I can only imagine how awful that show with Bomani Jones and Pablo Torres is.

Yes Bomani the racist, he is the worst of the worst. And the fact the Dan Lebaturd still has a show should tell you all you need to know. I scanned by an espn station the other day & was shocked this dope was still on.

Back when I used to still DVR Around the Horn sometimes, I would turn it on and, since we get the last 30 seconds or so of the prior show, I would sometimes have to endure the end of Highly Questionable (like I hit play and set the remote down without thinking I'd have to fast forward through 30 seconds of BS) and was repeatedly stunned that ESPN shows something that inane.  There was a time where LeBatard's dad literally ended the show by standing up, lifting up his shirt and showing off his fat stomach while babbling like an idiot.  Well done, ESPN.

Ironically, one of their biggest problems is they keep trying to.
I don't think they realize that most sports fans want to watch ESPN for sports, not political crap.  We have CNN, Fox News and MSNBC for that.  It's like they are trying to appeal to a demographic that doesn't watch a lot of ESPN anyway, generally speaking, and in the meantime they have alienated a lot of longtime watchers by beating us over the head with their agenda.

People can poke fun at me for listening to/watching Cowherd sometimes, but he mostly avoids that nonsense and just talks sports, which is a welcome relief in today's TV culture.

No doubt.

Sports is a mindless outlet for me. Over the last 10-15 years, ESPN specifically has turned from sports entertainment to social/political discussions that involve athletes.

I get that sports play a part in  our social and at times political landscape but to have the constant cycle of spousal abuse, drugs use, racial POV, anthem controversy etc...

The worst part is the achors feel like they need to become part of the story by voicing their outlandish or over the top opinion. So then, the achors are doing stories and shows about the opinions of.... other ESPN anchors.

Most people hate him here (or the SP?) but I'll take Berman making stupid nicknames and being a caricature of himself over some hot take race baiting agenda dealing dooshnozzle trying to drum interest up under the guise of sports.

Just terrible.

I want to watch ESPN for live sports.

The rest of the time they can talk about whatever they want. There is no topic or highlight show they could conceive of to increase my viewing share, period. I can't imagine I'm alone.

This whole "emagerd politics talk is so bad talk about Joe Flacco morez" is tiresome.

They need more live action content and filling that mid day weekday is hard.

ESPN is running their annual MLB trade deadline special right now. As I type there is 1 hour and 20 minutes left until the trade deadline and there is no shortage of activity, rumors, and trades being announced. The ESPN MLB trade deadline show is currently airing a Lebron James interview where he speaks about his move to the Lakers. I believe this is the 11,312th time they have aired this interview. The NBA season is 3 months away. Again, this is airing during the ESPN MLB Trade Deadline Special.

The marriage of Lebron James and the LA Lakers will be the final nail in the coffin for ESPN.

ESPN is pathetic and has been for a long time. It's apparent they have instructed every person/show to talk about nothing but the NBA, which is easily the worst sport on earth. Did they really spend that much on the NBA to make it this cringeworthy? I'm surprised they haven't changed the name of the network to espnba.

Hot take but needs more caps and exclamation points

Lmfao. Final nail by making them millions of dollars? Lebron in LA is a windfall for them.

If by "final nail" we're talking about me watching anything on ESPNBA other than college football, then yes.

Them making a bajillion dollars doesn't matter much to me; what counts is do they have programming that interests me. If they make mad money, that's OK with me.
