And I'm not sure they actually, in their statement to the media, cited safety. That's what the NYT headline read, and that has now been changed to something along the lines of "Robert Lee Removed Because Of His Name."

There are anonymous statements coming from inside ESPN now that it was Lee that made the request to be moved and that they then agreed.
The one thing I could see is there being concerned with Lee's first ever broadcast ending up being the subject of a bunch of memes. Of course, that's going to happen now anyway.

Basically, ESPN is scared that the perpetual sophomores of 4Chan are going to make hay out of this.
Some of us would've chuckled and noted the irony, but that would've been the end of it. Not now.

People sure do get angry about ESPN. I mean, this is obviously stupid. But its not nearly as big a deal as people are trying to make it out to be. I wonder why that is.
They also show like 1000 college football games every weekend. I can't remember the last Michigan game that wasn't on TV.
Thank Jesus, our Lord and Savior for creating ESPN. My weekends are infinitely better than they were before it existed.

Seriously. If this dude did the broadcast and introduced himself as just Robert Lee, I doubt any far left non-troll would even think twice about it. The "E" is the biggest identifier which is the trigger for a lot of people.

I'm still angry on a daily basis at the fact that ESPN continues to promote the start of the college football season on Aug. 31 (next Thursday). Completely ignoring the fact that there are a handful of games this Saturday, a couple of which actually are being broadcast by ESPN.

Ryen Russillo, host of The Russillo Show on ESPN, was arrested in Wyoming today. The details on the Teton County Sheriff’s Office inmate list are scarce, but the 42-year-old Russillo was charged with criminal entry.
Two people were asleep in the condo when they heard someone come in. They didn’t know the man and asked him to leave because he was drunk, according to reports. Police arrived a few minutes later.
“Occupants pointed the suspect out who was found in a bedroom,” Jackson Police Lt. Roger Schultz said.
Russillo, of West Hartford, Connecticut, reportedly had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.
“He couldn’t coherently answer any questions,” Schultz said.

I'll never forget the day after 9/11, and being in NY, Mike and Mike came on the radio and said (something like) "regardless of what happened in the world, people are here to listen about sports and that is what we are going to talk about. If you want to listen to news and yesterday's events, there are plenty of other channels covering it."
It must have been difficult to stick to sports that day and the few weeks after, but they did b/c they knew some people wanted a distraction form the news coverage. I gave them a lot of credit then.

I think that Patrick and Olbermann were doing social commentary, they were just doing it very subtly and less politically.
It was socioeconomic criticism, though, and it was done often. Their audience was just missing it.

They're talk sports is mostly garbage now but i think they found a way to separate themselves from other sports network by taking more of a social/political angle.
Lot's of money in political talkshow as we know, combining sports/politics may be a genius move on their end, even if alienates all of us who grew up with ESPN as the king of sports media.
