The Rise and Fall of ESPN (3 Viewers)

The Robert Lee

This must be a satire piece because I've been assured by my left-wing compatriots on the board that there is no such thing as a slippery slope when it comes to the Confederacy and things involving removal.
Sounds like it came from The Onion

Aside from previous intra-board squabbles, I find ESPN's statement revealing. It, on one hand, quotes safety as a concern but then goes on to worry about memes and student joke responses.

Well, which is it? The safety of the broadcaster, or the response on social media? It's a troubling, inconsistent statement and reveals that this is more an instance of complete cowardice by the network to do this than for "safety's" sake.
Word salad - they can't even make up a coherent cover story.

Good afternoon fans...this is Robert Lee coming to you from William & Mary where we have a big time Colonial Athletic Association tilt this afternoon...

Insert Stone Cold entrance

By Gawd...it's Robert E. Lee and he's back after 150 years and tougher then a two-dollar steak and he's marching right into William & Mary the campus with his troops

Please, please Jonathan turn off this Colonial Athletic Association match-up...it is causing me so much anxiety...I need a safe place to get away from this slobberknocker...

They love memes College Gameday, though.

They sure do. So long as it helps the brand.

And I'm not sure they actually, in their statement to the media, cited safety. That's what the NYT headline read, and that has now been changed to something along the lines of "Robert Lee Removed Because Of His Name."

There are anonymous statements coming from inside ESPN now that it was Lee that made the request to be moved and that they then agreed.

The one thing I could see is there being concerned with Lee's first ever broadcast ending up  being the subject of a bunch of memes. Of course, that's going to happen now anyway.

Basically, ESPN is scared that the perpetual sophomores of 4Chan are going to make hay out of this.

Some of us would've chuckled and noted the irony, but that would've been the end of it. Not now.

People sure do get angry about ESPN. I mean, this is obviously stupid. But its not nearly as big a deal as people are trying to make it out to be. I wonder why that is.

They also show like 1000 college football games every weekend. I can't remember the last Michigan game that wasn't on TV.

Thank Jesus, our Lord and Savior for creating ESPN. My weekends are infinitely better than they were before it existed.

This almost makes Skip Bayless seem intelligent by comparison. I said almost. The FF auction was good stuff since there have been fantasy auctions since, ohhh, forever. This bundle of shenanigans was the next step in assclownery.

HOLD MY BEER ESPN.

The worst part is his middle name doesn't begin with an E...
Seriously. If this dude did the broadcast and introduced himself as just Robert Lee, I doubt any far left non-troll would even think twice about it. The "E" is the biggest identifier which is the trigger for a lot of people.

ESPN is just like cable in general. As a whole it may suck, but pick and choose the right shows and it can be very good.

I haven't seen  single person angry.

I'm still angry on a daily basis at the fact that ESPN continues to promote the start of the college football season on Aug. 31 (next Thursday). Completely ignoring the fact that there are a handful of games this Saturday, a couple of which actually are being broadcast by ESPN.

The kicker was this tweet today:

8 days to CFB: Christian McCaffrey recorded 8 games with 200+ all-purpose yards, the most in FBS last season. #countdowntokickoff
McCaffrey's former team, Stanford, plays Saturday night against Rice in Australia ... ON ESPN!

J-F-C!!!! :wall:

:lmao:

Can see this playing out just like this:

ESPN President: This is the story we're rolling with, way too much backlash - you understand, General?

Robert Lee: What?

ESPN President: Do you want to ever call another game for the rest of your life?

Robert Lee: Fine, I wanted off of the game.

Has anyone gotten original ESPN anchor and current Outside the Lines host Robert (A.) Ley's thoughts on this?

Rather worried my employee ID/pass may not admit me in the AM. Life, as scripted by @OnionSports.

Ryen Russillo, host of The Russillo Show on ESPN, was arrested in Wyoming today. The details on the Teton County Sheriff’s Office inmate list are scarce, but the 42-year-old Russillo was charged with criminal entry.

Two people were asleep in the condo when they heard someone come in. They didn’t know the man and asked him to leave because he was drunk, according to reports. Police arrived a few minutes later.

“Occupants pointed the suspect out who was found in a bedroom,” Jackson Police Lt. Roger Schultz said.

Russillo, of West Hartford, Connecticut, reportedly had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

“He couldn’t coherently answer any questions,” Schultz said.

He joked several times over the past week or two about all the people that have offered up their places for him to stay while he was out in Wyoming, and how there was no way he was staying in some stranger's house.  Whoops......

Golic was spewing this garbage on Mike&Mike this morning. Why do I still listen to this garbage?

Maybe we're just amused by the further confirmation of what this once great sports network, now infused with politically correct idiocy, has become.

Spin zone: he ended up accepting an offer to stay at this particular place, but the guy forgot he made the offer.

Classic mix up.

Like the fantasy football auction story last week, when I first heard about this Robert Lee story today, my immediate reaction was, "It's satire."  It had to be, right?  Nope.

I can't remember the last time I went to the homepage and did not find some story with a socio-political angle to it.  And I can't remember the last time I watched a non-sporting event on one of their networks that wasn't dominated by a bunch of talking heads.

Next thing you know, MTV will stop playing music videos.

In fairness, it does sound like the State of Wyoming found someplace for him to stay.

Watch. One day, there will be a movement to remove George Washington and Thomas Jefferson from our currency. And that day isn't very far away.

I'll never forget the day after 9/11, and being in NY, Mike and Mike came on the radio and said (something like) "regardless of what happened in the world, people are here to listen about sports and that is what we are going to talk about. If you want to listen to news and yesterday's events, there are plenty of other channels covering it."

It must have been difficult to stick to sports that day and the few weeks after, but they did b/c they knew some people wanted a distraction form the news coverage. I gave them a lot of credit then.

“I will always go back to why did people turn us on when Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann were hosting, and why are they turning us on now?” she said.

I think that Patrick and Olbermann were doing social commentary, they were just doing it very subtly and less politically.

It was socioeconomic criticism, though, and it was done often. Their audience was just missing it.

Pretty sure this decision was made to drum up talk on ESPN and they struck Gold and now get their 15min out of this story

Entertainment
Sports
Programmingolitics
Network

They're talk sports is mostly garbage now but i think they found a way to separate themselves from other sports network by taking more of a social/political angle.
Lot's of money in political talkshow as we know, combining sports/politics may be a genius move on their end, even if alienates all of us who grew up with ESPN as the king of sports media.
