The Scotch Whisky Thread (1 Viewer)

I am staying with Mrs. O at the W in NYC tonight. I ordered a Macallan 25. First time I've ever had it. It was incredible. Best scotch I've ever tasted.

The cost? $100. For a drink. Easily the most expensive drink I've ever had.

My mother got me a bottle of Chivas Regal 18 yr.....wanted to exchange it cause I prefer single malt over blended. But it turns out she forgot that she bought it at duty free. So no exchange possible.

Was disappointed but as my wife said when I got home, it's not like it's going to make me gag. :)
So.....it didn't make gag but I'm not going to keep it. I'm just not a blended scotch drinker. It was just way too smooth and boring. Like it had all the character ripped out of it.

The rest of the bottle will be going to my brother in law who isn't as picky as I am. :/

Why not just get the bottle?
I actually will look for one to keep for most special occasions.
Easily your most expensive drink ever?

Come on, Oats. You're making bank--shoot the lock off your wallet and spend some.

All the Macallans over 18 year are awesome. I agree that the 25 is amazing.

It ain't chetloot, and in any event, how can a single glass of anything cost more than a hundred bucks. I'm sure it can, but seems crazy to me.

If the bottle is $1,100, for NYC the $100 glass doesn't even look like a crazy markup.

I think the typical markup is, what, 300% or 400%?

What is a serving of Scotch in a bar? One ounce?

If so, a bottle would yield $2500 in retail sales.

Costco sells a Kirkland branded scotch made by Glenlivet - 40 years in the cask - regular $699. Over Christmas they had it marked down to $399. I spent about ten minutes walking around the bottle, looking at it, but could not pull the trigger. That's a good price, but still way higher than anything I've ever paid or likely ever will pay for a bottle.

I agree I wouldn't buy something like this without reading some positive reviews first. I had a bottle of the 20 year speyside they sold under the Kirkland label a few years ago and thought it was pretty good value at about $40. This one is a bit different in that they put the Glenlivet name right on the label. The Kirkland champagne is great value at $30, but their bourbon isn't very good for the price imo. I think one problem for some folks is they just aren't comfortable pulling out a Kirkland branded bottle at a dinner party or giving it as a gift, just because of the snob factor.

Regarding the rusty nail...yum :P

More in this thread:

And the rusty nail is a damn good drink.
Just came here to post this same thing. Finishing up my first ever as a post Valentine's Day dinner drink. Delicious. The twist of lime cuts the medicinal flavor nicely, fyi.

Made it about 4:1 JW Gold (look at me!) to Drambuie and just added a touch of lemon at the very end to see what difference it would make. I will look for a bit more peppery mixer next time - JW Red or maybe Binny's exclusive Bank Note.

Sorry for the hijack...this belongs in the scotch whisky thread.

Thank you, Jimmy McGill, for introducing me to this fine drink. Sir, I am in your debt.

Time to bump.

Was gifted a bottle of Smoley Joe vatted Islay Malt.

My normal day to day got to scotch is an affordable Speyside and I enjoy ocassional trips to Islay malts.

Smokey Joe will grab you by the throat but grows on you quickly.

Ralfy reviews it quite accurately.

is clan macgregor good or not good brohans a relative brought me some and i want to know how much a jagbag or awesomeo he is i will hang up and listen take that to the bank no true brottsmans

I'm in Scotland, and my father in law is a scotch drinker.  I'd like to bring him back a bottle but I don't drink the stuff and have no idea what to get.  Any recommendations for a (reasonably priced) gift I should get while I'm here?  He usually drinks Johnnie Walker Black IIRC if that helps.

It might be best to speak with some locals and get something he can't get here. Or just grab something at the duty-free on your way home (which will most likely stock the widely available brands). FWIW, JW Black is a blend, which means he's not the snobbish type who turns his nose up at anything that isn't single malt. This broadens your scope somewhat, in that you can consider a really good blended scotch and not be afraid it won't suit him.

Maybe a Dimple, it's blended but with more character IMHO than most blended whiskies (IIRC, I've been on single malt for years now). And it comes in a very attractive bottle

About to crack open a bottle of Craigellachie 13 year old.  Anyone here have thoughts, likes, or dislikes I might want to know about?

I was on the waiting list to join Flaviar and just got the email this morning that I'm in (and can invite 2 friends).  Has anyone had any experience with this service or know of anyone that has?

Tried Scotch ages ago and thought it tasted like swamp ###. Twenty years later I love bourbon and find myself working my way through Irish whiskies and want to give Scotch another chance.

What is a good bottle to start with? Baby steps

I really like the Macallan and Glenlevit scotches. Generally, the older the better. The 18 year on both of those are amazing. The  Glenlevit is much more affordable and very good.

I'm not a fan of the smokey flavored scotches, and both of those are very mild.

I was just given a bottle of Glenlivet Archive 21 yr.  To quote the label on the box: "This batch of SPECIAL EDITION single malt SCOTCH WHISKY has been SELECTED by THE GLENLEVIT master distiller from the DISTILLERY ARCHIVE of RARE & EXCEPTIONAL CASKS"

I am not sure why they keep yelling at me, but I am hoping to be in for a real treat when I pop this bottle open.

I have a Yankee Swap with alcohol with a bunch of friends this weekend. Was thinking of maybe getting a good bottle of scotch for it in the $40-$60 price range. Any recommendations that you think would make a good gift that people would fight for?

Some options I've come across (not a big scotch guy so more so google research):

Highland Park 12 Year

Monkey Shoulder

Any suggestions/notes would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In that range, I'd go with Macallan 12. The 18 is WAY better, but it's about $220 a bottle. The 12 is in your range and is a very good scotch for that price.

If you can bump it up to around $80-90, Glenlivit 18 is fantastic.

Agree with kutta.  Macallan 12 is always a safe scotch, and some of the older stuff is great.

I've been getting deep into all sorts of good stuff lately.  Wife got me a bottle of Macallan 25 that I break out only for a single drink on special occasions.  It's lasting a bit.

Lately drinking a bunch of the Balvenies, including the 17, which is solid.  Also discovered Auchentoshen (sp?).  Had gone through the three wood and a 12, and picked up a bottle of the 18 last night.  Curious to try it on NYE.

JW Blue has been a staple in my house for a couple of years now.  Very smooth and solid, always have a bottle or two around.  Can't go wrong.  But I like to mix it up a bit and do other stuff too.

Also picked up the Dalmore cigar malt on a whim, which seems to get some killer reviews.  Very curious to try.

I've stocked up a good collection in the past year or two, I find I buy more than I drink sometimes.  Must have a good 12-15 bottles of different stuff at the moment.  I also find I drink it in waves though -- sometimes I'll go on a scotch kick for weeks or months and then won't drink any for weeks in between.  I do want to drink more of it though.  I find that each night Mrs. O and I crack a bottle of red wine which leads to two.  The calories are killer and it ends up being an expensive habit; whereas I'm more likely to have two nice sized scotches on the rocks and stop there.

Why are you drinking high quality scotch on the rocks?

Hello my scotch friends.  I've been poking around amongst the scotch whisky's for a time now.  Everyone's pallet is obviously different so the problem I have is being the only scotch drinker I know that enjoys better one's, I have a hard time forking over at least 50-100 bucks on a bottle not knowing how well (or if) I will enjoy this.

I do offer to you one that I've found that is head and shoulders better than anything else I've had at what I would consider a price I don't mind shooting the locks off the wallet for every 6-12 months or so.  Try the Bunnahabhain 18 http://www.totalwine.com/scotch/single-malt/bunnahabhain-18-yr/p/105297750-1?glia=true&s=517&pid=cpc:Shopping+US+TEXA+ENG+SPART:::google:&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkcHrt6-v2AIVmrXACh0ivwC0EAQYAiABEgKfgvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds sometime.  I was gifted this bottle in May and already picked up another.  I did buy the 12 year old when I finished the 18, as it was half the price, but it was no where near as good.  Still decent enough to drink, yes.

In my cabinet now I do also have the Macallan 18 which is quite good but pricey.  My guilty pleasure is Dalmore 12 which I seem to be the only one whom enjoys this delight, which is a-ok by me.

It tastes good?  Why are you a rocks snob?
I just think if you are drinking really good scotch that diluting it takes away from the drinking experience. Perhaps a drop of water or two into it neat but otherwise you are just robbing yourself of enjoying the scotch at its optimum.

Glenmorangie 18 presents good value IMO. Their Signet is excellent too, although much more expensive.
I was at Wolfganf’s In NYC and my buddy and I ordered Glenlivit 18. This old bartender dude comes from the bar to our table with a bottle of Glenmorangie 18 and says they are out of Glenlivit but we should try this stuff. He pours us both about four fingers, and we both loved it. It’s definitely on of my favs.
