The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (38 Viewers)

#65: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - 68PTS

#33 on KP's list
Power of the Dog is my gay cowboy movie lol. Much more dark and twisted. I remember being kind of disappointed in Brokeback when I saw it upon release but that was a long time ago so I should give it another shot.

#64: THE NICE GUYS - 68PTS

#65 On ilov80s' list and #69 on KP's list
How was this movie not a huge hit? Such a shame because they had plans for a sequel. This should have been this century's Lethal Weapon.
I think you would like Brokeback more now, especially keeping in mind our conversations about it.

Not sure about Nice Guys. It does seem like non-horror R rated movies have a little bit of an uphill climb at the box office during the last decade or so.
I guess so. If the movie came out in the late 80s with Kevin Kline in the Gosling role and Gene Hackman in the Crowe role, it probably finishes top 10 at the box office and spawns 2 more sequels of them running around Hollywood being funny and getting into capers.

The Master is one I expect to be on people's hate list, but has always been one of my favorite PTAs. On rewatches I have grown to think of it as a spiritual sequel to There Will Be Blood since it very much touches on similar themes and dynamics within relationships.

#59: SIDEWAYS - 72PTS

#29 on KP's list also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list, I believe
Alexander Payne is another of my favorite directors. I love all but one of his 8 films.

Six are eligible for this countdown and 5 of them would’ve made my list. Sideways would be the highest ranked for me.

This is my favorite Paul Giamatti performance. The scene where he is drinking his prize bottle of wine from a styrofoam cup with a drive-in cheeseburger and onion rings is fantastic. There are many more of them.

In my head i confuse Payne's movies with Cameron Crowe movies. One i like much more than the other, though.

Is Downsizing the 1 of 8 you don't like?
I think the 2 of his movies ranked the lowest for me, Citizen Ruth and Downsizing, are the only 2 in which he didn't adapt the screenplay from another source. I like Citizen Ruth quite a bit more than Downsizing, though.

He should stick to adapted works because when he does he usually nails it.

#59: SIDEWAYS - 72PTS

Loved it. I see way too much of myself in Paul Giamatti’s character, down to his dynamic with his best friend. It was actually a spur for me to tell myself, maybe try to act like that less.

Instead of merlot, do you lose your **** over bad music production? ;)

Pretty much.

"OK I'll go. But we are NOT listening to '80s music!"

Fun fact: Sales of merlot in the US dropped 14% in the year after Sideways came out. Sales of pinot noir, the character's favorite wine, rose 2%. Once again proving that people react more to negativity than positivity.

I was looking at Payne's movies and I am on board with your take. I really like his movies besides Downsizing, but a few of them in this century I have only seen once like Nebraska and About Schimdt. That's more why they weren't in contention for the list, but I remember really liking them. Aloha and The Descendents are the movies I confuse in my head, which is where my confusion with Payne and Crowe comes from.

Sideways is one that I have watched so many times and don't get tired of. A buddy road movie with two imperfect people that are very much their opposite. I love the performances of the two leads and their dynamic together. They feel like a pair of old college roommates that were stuck together, get on each others nerves, but are still there for each other and end up forming an enduring relationship. So many good scenes with just them, but then Madsen and Oh come in and it gets even better. Yes, Miles retrieving the wallet is one of my favorite scenes.

As I said, I love The Master. A reason I like PTA's movies so much is his repeat themes of found families and pseudo father/son relationships. I see this as a Hubbard-like peddler of a religion even he knows is bs in PSH. He meets a absolute crazy, drunk, explosive navy officer in Phoenix as sees him as the ultimate test of proving his crap works. Battle of egos for the movie. This is why I said it is the spiritual sequel with a similar dynamic with Plainview and Sunday. Great performances with Adams and others as well. A movie I keep coming back to a bit.

#56: PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE

#25 on Ilov80s' list

#59: SIDEWAYS - 72PTS

I 100% thought this was on my list too but I double checked and nope. It must have been a very last cut or just a straight up accident. Love Sideways.

I've rewatched my top 5 Payne movies many times. I need to give About Schmidt (my #6) another watch as I haven't in a few years. I doubt it will surpass Nebraska at #5 though.

#55: FORD V FERRARI - 76PTS

#62 on KP's list and #64 on Ilov80s' list
The ultimate dad movie of the century?
Very possibly. There are a couple others in the running that I doubt will make this countdown but I'm not going to spoiler.....

Fast and Furious was not on my list. ;)

For the countdown, we decided not to include documentaries. However, we brainstormed with Marco and came up with 16 documentaries we liked from the 21st century. I will just put them in alphabetical order and we each can post something about the ones we brought to the table:

  • Stories We Tell
  • Summer of Soul

  • Won't You Be My Neighbor?

Good list and like what I’ve seen in there. Jiro Dreams of Sushi and My Octopus Teacher are a couple of others that come to mind.

not on KPs list?

Have you just not seen it or do you just not like the lack of male nudity?
I saw it, I just didn't love it as much as others. There are other movies from the same director I think are better, and I thought there were other foreign movies that year that were better, like Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

We are rounding into the top 50 and I don't know how to describe this fun mix of movies. We have people reuniting after many years apart, corporate fixers, a sports movie about brothers, a family too religious for their own good, strange hood ornaments, unsupervised kids, and a bright cheery European vacation.

We don't have another on both lists until we get to #38, so it will all be from one or the other lists, and today we get into each of our top 20s. Odd way to do it, but I think the end product works out well and it should give a boost to movies we both liked enough to get in our top 100. It looks like today @The Dreaded Marco will agree with 80s twice and me not at all.
