The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (7 Viewers)

Like the Top 300+ album countdown, this one is heavily skewed by the predilections of the rankers. This one even moreso, since there are only 2.

This one is definitely more horror-heavy than a true top 100 deserves to be. And there probably should be a few (not many) superhero movies other than TDK in here...but we are dealing with subjective matter.

I never did either so maybe for old man Dr. O comic books remind him of his childhood but for me I just look at it and say "oh these" were good movies

My push back on this post is that in the movie threads I see a lot of posts complaining about Hollywood running out of ideas and that all the options are IP and sequels/reboots. I think 80s and i agree, and the countdown reflects that. It feels a bit "can't win" when the complaint today feels to be us (let's be fair, mostly me) putting in horror movies and PB Falcon over Marvel movies, MI movies, or John Wick 3.

My pov on the horror movies is that while we saw all that push for IP and same ideas in the action realm, horror movies saw an explosion of new and great ideas and pulled even non-fans like 80s into the genre a bit.

Imo the 21st century saw great horror movies and good, but mostly repetitive action movies as a whole. My list reflects that opinion.

I'm 56 and re-watch the MCU timeline once a year - I get why some people might not like them, but they hit the right amount of nostalgia (despite not having read a comic book in 40 years) and escapism for me. They also have great humor and the some of the storylines are much deeper than normal action movie fare.

I know a Marvel movie will likely never get the respect it deserves but the Avengers: Infinity War/Avengers: End Game combination which completed the storyline of the 10 years of movies before it was an incredible achievement.

I think that's part of the disconnect for me, I never got into comics as a kid at all. I know most action movies work this way but there was always something a little uninteresting or low stakes about superheroes because they have super powers and can't die (I know they do sometimes die but the next comic or movie can always bring them back with some new timeline or alternate universe or whatever). Which is why I think I like Batman. He's really a normal guy- plus it leans a little darker.

As for the bolded, sure they didn't win Best Picture but Marvel got a lot of respect and credit. They took over the entire entertainment industry, made all the money, pushed out a lot of other kinds of movies and basically became one of the biggest cultural tentpoles of a 10-15 year period. Those movies got great RT scores and made all the money. Every big star got recruited to be in them from ScarJo to RDJ to Harrison Ford to Robert Redford to Sam Jackson to Natalie Portman. The comic book fans won.

Oh yeah with just 2 people it's all about personal interests. If it was just me doing the list, there's hardly any horror at all. To make the list a little more rounded, another ranker or 2 with tastes that lean a little more action would have done that. But with these lists, it's always subjective. There are fair criticisms that there isn't enough action but then when Fury Road and Dark Knight came up, there was some negative reactions so it's not just about having superhero/action movies but about having "the right" superhero/action movies which is of course going to be different for everyone.

Other than the wildly underrated Constantine. I think that Endgame was good, as well as the first Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. Watchmen and Logan were great. Kick-*** is a lower tier movie for me but I think it might make the list. The Icredibles and Into the Spiderverse were good. The first Deadpool. The first Tom Holland Spiderman. I liked the Ed Norton Hulk. I liked the First Thor and Venom movies. Cpth America. Big fan of Hellboy.

maybe not all of them would make the cut and I have not seen a large portion of the movies listed here. I would have alot of action/superhero movies though since some of them are legit good.

On the top of my head the other movies I add or consider would be Identity, I'm p sure Tropic Thunder will be here as will High Fidelity. The Last Samurai would definitely make my list. Stardust is pretty likely. It's more or less just The Princess Bride so I think a lot of you might like it as well. Slumdog Millionare is on my list somewhere. I remember liking Silver Linings Playbook. Might have others from my fantasy list, especially more animated. The first Pirates movie was good. Really liked The Imitation Game and The Kings Speech. Big fan of Begin Again and already mentioned that I like The Words.
 
I agree with the list more than not. I’m not big into the franchise/Marvel/action movies. I haven’t made it through a John Wick, or seen any Avengers after the first one. Not into Mission Impossible or James Bond.

I’m not into the horror genre, so list has a bit more of that than would make my list, but I’m otherwise on board with most of what I’ve seen from the list.

I was impressed with what Marvel did with the storyline and how it all came together, and like I have said - there were some I really liked and would probably have a couple in my next 100 movies. I agree there is more to the movies than I expected when my son started getting into them.

I also seem to have hangups that most people don't have when it comes to CGI. When I watch and rewatch movies, a lot of the "magic" for me is figuring out how they pulled it off or set up shots. That is a big portion of my love of movies, and that is gone when I know the answer is computer + green screen for 90% of action movies from this era. I liked Casino Royale, I liked a MI movie, I liked the Bourne movies, etc.. I just don't love or rewatch many of those. I have a sprinkling of action movies in my top 100, but for me it's never going to get much above 10% of the movies I watch. It's mostly dramas and horror with sci-fi and comedy next. I've never been a big action movie guy, but when I do watch one it's most likely an 80s/90s movie.

Like I said, I get why some people would not like them - but stating those movies as being for 14 year olds is kind of ironic coming from a horror movie fan (I like horror movies also during Halloween).

Odd shot with the horror, it would have been more effective bringing up The Muppets or Rango. ;)
 
For people who don't read my posts (BP!!) : we are done with horror and animated/family movies on the countdown. Remember- the top 20 we both had on our list and we don't agree on those much. Most of the top 20 is drama/foreign type fare. with a couple exceptions.

Many of the movies on this page were last cuts for comedy. The decade long run for mid 90s-mid to late 00s where awesome for comedy. Not as much in the last decade as the country lost its collective sense of humor.

I meant more in an artistic way than in a mass consumption way - but get your point.

And I get that people that don’t like them, are pushed to dislike them more by them flooding the market.
 
Dammit, now I want to watch Hot Rod.

I just scanned through my master list and there are so many comedies from this era I would gladly watch right now I circled a quick list of 50-60 titles, and that was just straight comedy so excluded rom coms and horror comedies. Where my list got a little inaccurate is there probably not enough straight comedies. I watch a lot of them, but I don't own them if that makes sense. The handful I put on my list are ones I watch over and over. Maybe I could have had a couple more looking at this list. There are a lot of big titles that didn't make our countdown. We can talk about those at the end as others might have their lists of big stuff we didn't have.

How about a mini-list of my deeper dives on the list that I really liked that people might not have seen....
  • The To Do List - very raunchy movie like Superbad, but the roles are reversed and Aubrey Plaza stars as the HSer trying to get laid.
  • Baby Mama - Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Poehler becomes surrogate mom for uptight Fey
  • Fanboys - road trip of a group of friends trying to see Phantom Menace before it's release. Has Kristin Bell and Baruchel
  • Bad Words - Jason Bateman as an adult crashing the natioanal Spelling Bee
  • The Campaign - Ferrell and Galifianakis battle for a congressional seat.
  • 21 Jump Street - people have probably seen this, but it was one of my last cuts. One of the bigger surprises of the era for me.
