To be clear going forward: when there are ties in points I post the movie in order of: movie on both of our lists - movie on 80s' list - my movie.

I really enjoyed Midnight In Paris.
It also met the requirement for any fairly recent Allen film - he doesn't have a role in it, which makes it 100% better.

I'm a big fan of The Departed. It's an easy rewatch when it's on. No issue with it not beeing a top 166 film, but I would probably have had it in my top 100. Maybe top 50.

I saw the Speak No Evil remake and didnt' like it much, and I'm a horror fan. Never saw the original because I never learned to read.

Did you not know it's a remake, or do you just in general not watch foreign language movies?

The Ring is the only remake I can think of that I would say is worth the watch. Everything else usually misses the point of the movie or gets away from what made them great horror movies in the first place. They lack the pace, tension, and social dynamics of the originals. American versions of the horror of other countries tend to show too much and rely on jump scares and kills.

I don’t get people that let 20 seconds of a movie ruin it for them.

Not "ruin", but nibbles at the enjoyment of. Since it's the last thing you see, often an ending like that if you don't like it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. If something like that is in the middle of the movie, it gets buried more. My spelling was horrible there - it "does" bother me. I added a letter, not forgot one. But again, this is nitpicking movies that I really like for ranking purposes. I had to find some way to choose these 100 movies over the other 500+ on my list. . Honestly what bothers me more in the movie is Marky Mark. I know people like his character and think he's funny, but it's often those types of characters that populate Marty's dramas that make me not click fully with them. Overall I love the twists and turns and Jack, Leo, Damon, and Farmiga are awesome in this. I just also recommend checking out the original if people haven't.

I’ll stick by what I said - seems silly to ding a movie for a tacked on (admittedly corny) less than 20 second clip at end.

One thing about The Departed that stood out to me on more recent watch was how it doesn’t actually feel like a Scorsese movie. Not sure if I can pinpoint why but as good as it is, it doesn’t feel like his movie. It’s more like a job he got brought in to do than something he incubated himself.

As for The Father. What an incredible movie and performance from Hopkins. It absolutely places you in the mind of someone with dementia. My MIL has it. My grandma died of Alzheimer’s. The Father so good at what it’s doing but I don’t think I ever want to see it again. It’s so good it’s traumatic. There will be lots of movies on here that I love to watch over and over but this one is here because of how much I don’t want to watch it again.

I care not about posts with specific titles on them. I can choose to not comment. I figure at this point we know what the main titles for genres are and what type of movies are on RS lists and others and are also likely to be showing up somewhere here. I like the banter about movies people have seen, and welcome guesses of what will be at the top for us. (which I haven't seen yet - hint, hint to the onlookers)

I have thrown Martyrs, Jackass, and Beau is Afraid out there - I 100% guarantee there are going to be surprises from me and 80s. I was surprised by several things on his list - a main one being in my top 10.

As for my reasoning behind Beau is Afraid. I don't think it's a secret from the movie threads that Aster and PTA are my favorite directors working right now. I will watch and buy anything buy them at this point. That said Beau is Afraid is one that I even struggle with a bit. I think the first act with him meeting is doctor and in his apartment is great. I think it starts to spiral after that, but I still liked a couple other of the segments as well. Of course with the clue I was talking about the paint drinking scene.

There are a few movies on my list that I honestly don't 100% connect with or dislike parts more of than the 20sec rat walk. I have movies like this on my shelves that I purposely buy and rewatch. I think the direction and acting are that good, and the +s are much better than the -s for me. Also, I like to remind myself that I didn't like movies such as Pulp Fiction, Big Lebowski, or There Will Be Blood the first time I watched them, and now they are some of my favorite movies. I am not saying Beau is as good as those or I will end up rating it as highly, more that I am enjoying the process and I am trying to crack the code and humor of that movie. More accurately, it is probably going to act as a placeholder for Eddington, which I liked a ton on first watch.

I liked ambitious stuff even if it seemed random at times. Your Altmans and PTAs and such.

I am not sure if you have seen Ari Aster's other stuff, but when I read this line I thought of a few of my picks, and these are often ones that 80s and I don't agree on (Beau is a perfect example). My list is more likely to have these types of movies, and his is probably more likely to have the typical 'guy' movies that I don't like sometimes - the Scorsese, Coppola type of directors and movies like Glengarry. You are much less likely to see a PTA, Eggers, or Aster movie on his list or others I would mentally code in that bucket (I think Bergman would be in here too, right @Ilov80s ? - am I off on that assessment? )

This is why we sync up for these countdowns. We agree on a lot, and I really love how our combined top 20 turned out, but we do differ on some things and that is what brings a better variety to these lists.

I purposely put some movies that are difficult watches at the end of my list. Micheal Haneke would be another director I would put into that bucket of directors who make movies that are quite difficult hangs. Code Unknown, Cache, and The White Ribbon were 3 other movies that I had written down in the notebook of death and are movies that also pushed me. However, Amour was the one that affected me the most and gutted me. Difficult, but to me also beautiful and touching as well. A movie that had me bawling and has stuck with me since first viewing. I wanted to have at least one of his movies on here somewhere.

Part comedy part family drama about an 80s family coming apart due to their father’s infidelity. It’s got that real sharp pointed humor- definitely Woody Allen-esque. One of Jeff Daniels best performances he’s plays such an ***.

His first 2 are horror, and I don't remember you mentioning that genre in your post about movie tastes. Beau is a damn stressful movie. Basically Aster putting a 3 hour movie together of somebody with extreme anxiety. It's set up as though it's several acts each representing a fear that he has, and it is way weirder than the trailer could represent. Aster has a very dark and sarcastic sense of humor, as do I at times, and that is all over this movie. His newest one, Eddington is his most accessible and is about a town in New Mexico turning on itself at the start of the pandemic. I was laughing quite a bit during that one. Not many people in the FFA like his stuff, and I can understand that.

I have tortured my wife with a lot of horror movies during my last few 31horror in October runs. She does like more than I expect, and the ones that click with both of us the most seem to be the found footage ones.

More saying I don't go to the ratings sites that much. I don't watch trailers and don't usually click with the masses, so imdb ratings don't interest me much. I dislike RT more because that system is just stupid. If I am looking for ideas I usually get them in our review threads, or look up "best of " lists on line and find a few sites that I tend to sync up with more. More often than not, I just look at titles of upcoming movies and who is directing them and go in mostly blind. It's more fun for me that way.

I'm not a big horror fan. And my wife hates it so I've seen about zero of them since I've been with her. There is one horror movie from this century that I did like and will comment on if it shows up.

I have tortured my wife with a lot of horror movies during my last few 31horror in October runs. She does like more than I expect, and the ones that click with both of us the most seem to be the found footage ones.

I had asked you to watch a movie from 2011. So you've either watched it and it didn't make this list or you haven't done it. You might not like it anyway given that it's a semen free movie.

More saying I don't go to the ratings sites that much. I don't watch trailers and don't usually click with the masses, so imdb ratings don't interest me much. I dislike RT more because that system is just stupid. If I am looking for ideas I usually get them in our review threads, or look up "best of " lists on line and find a few sites that I tend to sync up with more. More often than not, I just look at titles of upcoming movies and who is directing them and go in mostly blind. It's more fun for me that way.

gotcha. I just meant if you are going to start linking trailers from youtube you might as well link the imdb page that has the trailer and other info. Just thought others might appreciate that but if you just want to link youtube trailers that's fine. I can look up my own movies.

The trio of movies in the morning that are just 80s' is the only time that happens if my scan is correct. I like how these countdowns sync up and most of the time the most each of us have in a row is two, and we are often looking at pairs i will post that are one from each or with one that we both had on our list.

20 of our 36 movies on both lists make up our top 20 movies for this countdown. Those movies scored 102-196 points. The 21st/22nd movie on the countdown are each of our #2 movies (99pts each). In general, because of the scoring system, if we agreed on the movie it got a big boost up the countdown. Not always though, it looks like our first that is on both of our lists is sitting at #124.

However, there are 3 times where I have stretch of 3 movies in the countdown that are just mine. The first starts at #123, but the highest trio sits at movies 35, 34, and 33 because my top 10 largely wasn't even on his countdown. Those are the movies I ranked 11, 10, and 9.
