This thread inspired me to start writing down my favorite movies of this century. I’m up to about 70.

The Florida Project will be in my top 30 for sure—-maybe higher.

Sometimes I really do think that how we process certain elements in art is predictive of our politics. I'm sort of with the people I'm normally with on the film. I didn't read them beforehand. In fact, Kyle Smith liked Baker's first one (Smith is NR and the New York Post). I didn't read anything about The Florida Project other than from here and within forty minutes I just didn't want to watch it. It's just my temperament and opinion so it's not a big deal but I didn't get the love at all.

Also to take a doll and make it into a real movie is pretty tough to do. I still can’t believe they pulled it off. And it makes sense it’s sort of controversial. The dolls likely had a weird history bouncing from an image of feminist empowerment to being a relic of outdated culture. That is a whole other deep context for the movie that I’m not really educated enough to dive into.

A second Ryan Gosling movie for the day!! I had forgotten how good Blue Valentine was, but I rewatched that one during my "time" theme week. This one tells the story of Gosling's and Michelle Williams' relationship through flashbacks and non-linear structure. Both actors are two of my favorites of the 21century. I am actually surprised I don't have more Williams representation on the list, but I think we will see her again sometime. I seem to gravitate to movies about rocky relationships that still have great scenes with some romance. I'm not a big fan of "happily ever after" movies it seems and like ones that are more realistic or like Before Sunrise where people are together for a limited time and connect strongly.

Yeah I immediately texted my friend who is really struggling with his dad's dementia and gave him a big warning about it. I could see how it could help you understand what they are experiencing and get some empathy but I also could see how it could just hit too close and wreck someone.

Another movie likely lost in COVID. It's a fictionalized account of a Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke, Jim Brown and Malcolm X the day and night Ali beat Liston for the heavy weight title. Apparently they did really gather and hang out but obviously we don't really know what happened behind doors. It's based on a play but I do think it manages to bring enough cinematic flair to it to exceed those limitations. 1965, these 4 larger than life Black stars struggle with their roles in America and the part they are supposed to play in each others lives and in the Civil Rights Movement as a whole. I thought it was really adept at taking a large philosophical discussion and making it entertaining. It sounds like it might be a drag or too serious but it manages not be because of the friendships between the 4 leads.

Still one I haven't seen. I've seen the Riechardt movie, Take this Waltz, Shutter Island, Manchester, Certain Women, etc. She is great in all of those.

I am not either for most people. We are doing more movies than we did for the 90s and 80s because we covered 2.5X the years. I think both of us leaned a bit toward obscure movies that stuck with us toward the bottom of our list. One tonight is a blockbuster and the 1st in a reboot franchise. Starting tomorrow night, there will be even more blockbusters and known movies trickling in. We still have some under the radar foreign movies and horror movies to come, but I think (hope?) people will start recognizing more and more soon. You might not like them and still think we are nuts for having them in our top 100, but you will start to recognize more titles.

No, not at all. I am just aware of how many movies we both watch and how off the beaten path we can get with our rankings sometimes. I would expect people to have seen a ton of movies to be shuked on some of our titles as well. Hell, I am pretty sure 80s said he didn't know one in my top 10 was a thing.

Y tu Mama Tambien was my intro to Alfonso Cuaron. It's about two friends who see their girlfriends off on their trip. Empty promises of fidelity that they had no intention of keeping. They meet an older woman and the trio take off together. They confront their pasts, their sexualities, and their mortality. It is a sexy, touching ride.

Spotlight was really interesting. Don't know if it would make my list overall, but certainly very good.

I can't believe Y Tu Mama Tambien was in the 2000s. It started my lifelong, though apparently not so lifelong, love of Gael Garcia Bernal. It seems like that has gone on longer. Oh, and I hated the movie, though.

Oh man. Yeah. I messaged to KP when this began that I wasn't sure how long I could last in this thread. KP and 80s put so much work into them, and I feel like most people want to come in and **** all over it. Whether for shtick, which is some, or for genuine lack of knowledge of movies, it's just so painful to read. Quick check: if your reaction is, "I've never heard of these," said in a negative way, then that's on you. Why are you even in a movie thread if you don't know a lot of stuff and are not looking to learn?

I'll look forward to seeing their lists in a PM instead! Some (and not all!) of you should think about what you're doing here and what you are contributing to, rather than subtracting from, the thread. Gross.

if you look at the online top 100 movies of the 21st century it seems to always be up there so its interesting to see it so low on here. I have either never seen it or have seen it and it wasn't memorable to me.

Our system isn't perfect, but I think it's fun because I usually agree on movies with 80s, and when I don't I at least appreciate the opinions and passions. It being this low only means it was on one of our lists, and on the lower end. This time it was mine, and I had it at #88. I'm not sure if he has seen it or not, or maybe didn't like it like Krista. It is not a movie I revisit all the time, but it was a key movie in generating an interest in watching more and more foreign language movies. If I have 13-15 foreign movies on my list, it feels right to me that it's #12 or so. We didn't combine and decide together on our 164 movies. We each did a list of 100, had 36 the same, which instead of 200 movies total gave us the 164 for the countdown.

I watched a lot of movies in HS and college, but my taste was a bit different and not a lot of variety. I basically refused to watch a foreign language movie around that time as well. When I bought the video store, I took the stance that I probably should try to branch out and watch different stuff so I could recommend movies to whoever came in the doors, and the old guy we bought it from had a small section of decent foreign movies. The one that really triggered my passion for foreign language movies is way up the list and is my highest ranked foreign language movie because of that door it opened. One of the next ones was Audition (no spoilers, that was a 90s movie). That blew my mind and opened the flood gates to expand into foreign horror movies. Y Tu is similar in that it was an early one that really stuck with me, but it's not one I revisit like I do others.
