The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (2 Viewers)

We love to gripe about prequels/sequels/reboots/IP in the movie threads (I do as well), but in the back of my mind I still have examples like Rise of the Planet of the Apes that I thought were great. I thought the idea they came up with for the reason why the apes became smart was really well done and often very emotional. I gripe about CGI, but what they did with Serkis and motion capture was great. I liked the others in the series, but this is still easily my favorite because of the emotional story behind it. My one nitpick for the movie is James Franco. Great at playing a stoner in Pineapple Express, but I didn't love him here as the scientist working with Caesar. I really dug the originals, hated the Burton version, so I was glad to see this series get right again.

I think tomorrow we will do about 7 as well. It looks like @Ilov80s has a pair in the morning from the same director, for lunch we have a tie of a rom com and an Oscar contender that people didn't seem to like around here, then my first animated movie, and another tie of a foreign family comedy/drama that got an unfortunate American remake and a huge winner at the Oscars.

We are home from the pool early, so I will post 2 sets of ties tonight. One now, and one in a few hours.

SPOTLIGHT - 13PTS

Not much to say here, I’m sure most everyone is familiar with it. The story of how The Boston Globe broke the story of widespread sexual abuse and coverup in the Catholic Church. Like All the Presidents Men, it manages to make real journalism exciting. The performances are strong, it manages to be respectful of the enormity of the real life pain the events of the movie have caused but also keep it entertaining for viewers.

A REAL PAIN - 14 PTS.

It’s a dramedy from 2024. Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin play cousins who take a trip to Poland for a Holocaust tour as a way of paying tribute to their recently deceased grandma. Eisenberg is neurotic, cold but successful, Culkin is magnetic, caring, unsuccessful and very volatile. It’s funny and serious and often quite uncomfortable. It’s steaming on Hulu now.

Culkin is so damn funny and insane in this

Take a shower, brush your ****in' face. Like, floss your butt, do whatever it is you gotta do to feel like you. I'm gonna roll us a fat ****in' joint, and we'll go to the roof, okay?

163 - MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
160 - REVOLUTIONARY ROAD
159 - THE FATHER
157 - AMOUR
156 - THE SQUID AND THE WHALE
155 - UP
154 - BARBIE
152 - BLUE VALENTINE
150 - Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN
149 - SPOTLIGHT
148 - RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
147 - A REAL PAIN
Of the movies you've listed that I've seen, you guys are batting 1.000. Not a single miss for me.

At least 4 of these will be in my top 100---maybe a couple more.

It is one that I had in my queue because I thought it looked funny, but I didn't recognize the title when I was reading your list. Only when I was looking for the trailer did I realize what movie it was.

Like with the album thread, I will try to watch a handful on your list that I haven't seen yet. So far I have marked this one, One Night In Miami, Macbeth, and The Father. I am a bit 21st centuried out, so I have been listening to music and watching baseball and soon some EPL soccer with a sprinkle of classics. Maybe November would be a good time to revisit this thread and mine it for ideas after I overdo it with horror movies in October as usual.

I was just about to @ you and ask how that list was going.

Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN
if you look at the online top 100 movies of the 21st century it seems to always be up there so its interesting to see it so low on here. I have either never seen it or have seen it and it wasn't memorable to me.
Our system isn't perfect, but I think it's fun because I usually agree on movies with 80s, and when I don't I at least appreciate the opinions and passions. It being this low only means it was on one of our lists, and on the lower end. This time it was mine, and I had it at #88. I'm not sure if he has seen it or not, or maybe didn't like it like Krista. It is not a movie I revisit all the time, but it was a key movie in generating an interest in watching more and more foreign language movies. If I have 13-15 foreign movies on my list, it feels right to me that it's #12 or so. We didn't combine and decide together on our 164 movies. We each did a list of 100, had 36 the same, which instead of 200 movies total gave us the 164 for the countdown.

I watched a lot of movies in HS and college, but my taste was a bit different and not a lot of variety. I basically refused to watch a foreign language movie around that time as well. When I bought the video store, I took the stance that I probably should try to branch out and watch different stuff so I could recommend movies to whoever came in the doors, and the old guy we bought it from had a small section of decent foreign movies. The one that really triggered my passion for foreign language movies is way up the list and is my highest ranked foreign language movie because of that door it opened. One of the next ones was Audition (no spoilers, that was a 90s movie). That blew my mind and opened the flood gates to expand into foreign horror movies. Y Tu is similar in that it was an early one that really stuck with me, but it's not one I revisit like I do others.

Nice. No sarcasm on my end.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - 14PTS
Nice - I've really enjoyed the whole new collection of the apes movies - my then teenage son liked them a lot too, so it gave us a chance to watch together. I've tried to get him to watch the Charlton Heston original, but he's not a big fan of older movies - eventually he'll cave I think.

When he gets a little older and discovers the reefer? ;)

There are going to be many more on my list that a reason they are there because I really liked watching with the kids, and there are a few that were slam dunks with both kids. However, my tastes still came first and the main factor was which ones did I like best. For a test, I asked my daughter her favorite 3-4 Pixar movies and she didn't name mine. I did the same with general animated, and she had different ones, but did give a joking eyeroll answer when naming 2 of the 3 on my list. They like them, but definitely not as much as I do.

I have thought about trying the Apes movies since we have crossed into Pg13 with movies like Jurassic Park and Star Wars. She does still spook a little easily, and I wondered if the parts at the zoo would be a bit much still. One of these days, or I could try the older ones first on her. Hmm...

I was thinking more when he discovers Linda Harrison (Nova), but same difference.

Ok, we have a pair from @Ilov80s that are from the same director!

#146: 12 YEARS A SLAVE

#145: SMALL AXE: LOVER'S ROCK

Powerful movie with that first one. I had sort of forgotten about 12 Years A Slave when doing my list, but remember it being one of my top movies that year. I had been a big fan of McQueen's after seeing Hunger and Shame - both really well made, difficult movies that also starred Micheal Fassbender (also was the first time I encountered him as an actor). Great movie and great acting performances all around. Some heavy hitters of the 21st century in here: Ejiofor, Fassbender, Cumberbatch, Giamatti, Lupita Nyong'o, Woodard, and Dano. I never got around to the Small Axe series (which is on Prime if people want to watch that one), and I didn't know he had a movie released in 2024. It might be time to revisit this director.

Hints for our lunch pair:

One from 80s that was nominated for at least 9 Oscars and stars one of the actors I just listed above from 12 Years a Slave
One from me that reveals a couple secrets: I love rom/coms and full frontal male nudity always gets a laugh out of me.

October will be a good time for me to check out some of the movies on your list I haven’t seen since many of them are the horror movies. I’m looking forward to October, it’s one of the best times of the year!

Oh man. Yeah. I messaged to KP when this began that I wasn't sure how long I could last in this thread. KP and 80s put so much work into them, and I feel like most people want to come in and **** all over it. Whether for shtick, which is some, or for genuine lack of knowledge of movies, it's just so painful to read. Quick check: if your reaction is, "I've never heard of these," said in a negative way, then that's on you. Why are you even in a movie thread if you don't know a lot of stuff and are not looking to learn?

I'll look forward to seeing their lists in a PM instead! Some (and not all!) of you should think about what you're doing here and what you are contributing to, rather than subtracting from, the thread. Gross.
As one of the people who said it after like 5 movies were listed - I didn’t mean any insult by it at all - more just surprised that I hadn’t heard of these movies. If @KarmaPolice or @Ilov80s took it as an insult I apologize.

I do think generally some criticisms should be expected in threads like this (most of it is in good fun) but will keep being respectful in mind.

Yeah same. Hopefully she comes back in here. I appreciate their efforts even if I don’t always agree with them. I figure I’ll at least come out of a here with a handful of movies to watch

I wasn't insulted. KP and I knew there would be lots of movies people hadn't heard of, especially at the back end.

#146: 12 YEARS A SLAVE
Another movie that I will probably never watch again because it's a tough watch but I felt it deserved a spot because of how impactful it is. I think movies can be great teachers. Reading about slavery or hearing a teacher talk about it is one thing but seeing a movie like 12 Years a Slave can give a much more vivid sense of what it actually looked and felt like. This movie is nothing if not a good tool for allowing people to 2nd hand experience a sinister part of our history.

#145: SMALL AXE: LOVER'S ROCK
This is also directed by Steve McQueen. He made a 5 movie anthology series (Small Axe) that released in 2020 on BBC and Prime. By far my favorite is Lover's Rock. This movie is quite simple. It's the shortest movie on our list, just 70 minutes. It's London, 1980 and people are throwing a house party. You follow it up from the DJ setting up to people arriving, dancing, fighting, falling in love. All with the the non-stop musical soundtrack and energy you would expect from a good old fashioned house party. There isn't backstory on the people, there isn't some big theme, not too much really happens either. It just drops you into this world for a very brief bit of time.

It has a killer 70s soundtrack

We love to gripe about prequels/sequels/reboots/IP in the movie threads (I do as well), but in the back of my mind I still have examples like Rise of the Planet of the Apes that I thought were great. My one nitpick for the movie is James Franco. Great at playing a stoner in Pineapple Express, but I didn't love

Its amazing how you feel so much sympathy for a CGI chimp. I thought it was very well done movie - and doesn't necessarily feel like a remake - just a different telling of the story.

I get the names confused as to which Planet of the Apes is which but I like all of the ones I've seen.

No, it's a prequel as it tells how the Planet of the Apes came to be.

No, it's a prequel as it tells how the Planet of the Apes came to be.

So did two of the original Planet of the Apes movies, "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" and "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes". It's basically a remake of Conquest (but very different as well).

I’m interested to see how many people actually liked Barbie (in here, obviously it was very popular).
I'm a big Great Gerwig fan and I enjoyed Barbie.

Not my favorite Gerwig film by a long shot, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
Same for me. I really liked Barbie but it wouldn’t make my top 100 of this century.

A different Gerwig movie is definitely on my list though.

In the original series, in the second movie "Beneath the Planet of the Apes", the few remaining intelligent humans who are in hiding worship a nuclear bomb and when the Ape army overtakes their home under the ground they explode the bomb. In the next movie "Escape" shows that Galen and Vera (chimps) escaped the explosion in a spaceship that ended up taking them back to the past of Earth. They have a son, "Ceasar" and when the non trusting humans eventually kill Galen and Vera out of fear, Ceasar is taken into a circus run by Ricardo Montauban.

In "Conquest" (which Rise is based on) many years have passed and a disease wipes out all the cats and dogs so people take in apes as pets and eventually turn them into servants, Ceaser as the one ape that can talk and has intelligence then leads a revolution of the apes - which is how the apes were in control with humans as slaves in the first "Planet of the Apes" movie. It's a very circular series.

As you can tell I used to love "Planet of the Apes" week on the 4:30 movie as a kid.
Oh man that’s sort of how I discovered them too. No idea what station, pretty sure it was over Christmas break one year. I just happened to catch the very start of the original and thought what the heck. I had no idea about the ending which blew me away. I probably didn’t get off the couch for 8 hours as the station played a marathon of them. I was riveted.

12 Years a Slave was powerful with great performances. However, the events in it were so cherry picked that it eventually became too one sided. It reached the point where there was not one shred of decency anywhere in the South. The Fassbender character is an example, who only existed to torment the poor slaves. For me, this changed it from a great film to just a good one and not worthy of a Best Picture Oscar. On a side note, I think that Lupita is an amazing actress in all of her films.

12 Years A Slave might be the 2nd worst best picture winner this century, at least of the ones I’ve seen (there’s a handful I just had no interest in)

I've never read the memoir it's based on and have no idea how accurate his memoir was but it is based on a true story so it's tough for me to criticize the events of the story.

I’ve seen that movie over five times and I don’t think I’ve seen his schvantz. I think I blocked it out.

“Hey, Motumbo, mind getting out of the picture?”

Care to say why you thought is was so bad?

I didn't read the bolded, and I thought of Chicago, Crash, and Return of the King and I was about to start harping on you.

Doh you were supposed to wait until I was on the road to post this lol. I believe Bill Simmons called it The Power of the Nap. I get that it's slow and contemplative and most of us only saw it home surrounded byu distractions. I've seen it twice, thought it was even better the 2nd time. The twists are really well done. There are at least 2 big gay cowboy movies from the last 25 yearsthat were supposed to win Best Picture and didn't. The Power of the Dog s the dark sinister one so it's no wonder it's my preferred choice.

Oh yeah. When she dumps him. He’s in the kitchen. I just don’t really notice it for some reason. She asks him to put clothes on. It’s a disaster. And Kunis also walks in on him but is much cooler (of course).
