The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (1 Viewer)

#121: GET LOW - 31PTS
I hadn’t even heard of this but I’ll keep an eye out for sure. I love Bull Murray, Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek.
Ouch. Someone didn’t read my other 00s countdown! ;)

If i remember correctly this was another that Krista saw and liked as well.

KNEECAP - 20PTS

Irish rap group formed around the idea of rapping in their Native Irish tongue as a middle finger to the British. It’s the true story of the formation of this real rap group, starring the actual members of Kneecap. It plays out like a drug fueled gangster concert movie. Heavily Goodfellas and Trainspotting and Guy Ritchie influenced, such a good time.

EVERY WORD OF IRISH SPOKEN IS A BULLET FIRED FOR IRISH FREEDOM.
I watched this for the first time last night----loved it.
That’s awesome to hear. The list is already a success then. I thought the 3 leads did a great job for non-actors. So much crazy energy in the movie too. Pretty sure it’s the directors feature debut too.
Agreed. Your description is spot on.

I’d forgotten that you said those were the actual rappers, not actors. They held their own just fine.

Less funny when you find out they’ve been photographed draped in Hamas flags. Virulent.

Well, yeah, that's awful.
We should not get into that discussion here but the entire situation is awful........on to the next movie reveal.
I fully agree that we shouldn’t and wouldn’t have brought it up but for context.

Maybe that should be the new shtick - no posts until the movies are guessed correctly.

#119: JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH - 32PTS

#120: EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE - 31PTS

Next:

a workplace comedy about a once respected profession?
A sequel to a movie old enough that people might have forgotten about it?
One of these movies also one a couple Oscars.

Owe a couple write-ups, but most of the movies were talked about and I'll be echoing those thoughts.

Promising Young Woman's acting + twists and turns really stuck with me. Usually these themes are left for grimy 70s-style horror movies, but here we have all the horror and tension in a more main stream, Academy nominated packaging.

The Peanut Butter Falcon hooked me right away. I had stayed away because the title is dumb (but is perfect in context of the movie) and Shia isn't my favorite actor. I get Andy's point about the ending but it didn't take anything from the movie before it. Many heart warming and funny scenes in this one.

Once is one I've returned to a few times. I am not one for musicals, but there are two on my list - or at least my version on it. Felt like a Before Sunrise set to music more than a Chicago style song and dance musical. It is about a pair of musicians who meet in Ireland

I talked about Monsters, Inc and gave my reasons there.

Get Low I could have sworn I talked about more around here. That was one I stumbled on at the store, and tried because of the stars. Duvall stars as a town recluse who comes into town to aske for a funeral party for himself. He recruits Murray who is the owner of the local funeral home, and people are invited to come tell stories they have heard about Duvall. Great performances.

EEAAO was in the Beau tier for a similar reason and sat at my #99. A movie i liked more the 2nd time, but I am still forming my opinion on. I like having a couple of those movies on my shelf to revisit and work my way through.

No, but Butt Plugs 3 won an AVN award, I think
we are learning so much about your viewing habits
Well, nobody seems to know the regular movies, so I thought I might throw out some alternative titles! ;)
maybe when we get to some good movies we might know them
Tough crowd. If I can't hook you with Lego Movie and Deathgasm, not sure what else I have to do.

I already like the lego movie though and I don't think deathgasam isn't like horrible or anything but seems low tier. I already like several of the movies listed, dunno wich are yours and wich is 80s

I don't either at this point.

I get yelled at for posting pretty colors by the dark mode weirdos. The bolded are my 3. We didn't have any movies on both lists until Promising Young Woman this morning.

You guys are really syncing up with my overrated list
Do you base a lot of the "rated" part by if they won Oscars, or are you just talking in general about seeing in threads, on 'best of' lists, etc..?

Yes

Did you even read the thread?
No, just glanced at the movies and chuckled.

I was thinking about the Oscars more today, and I think the best way to correlate my tastes is that I gravitate a lot to Oscar nominated movies, but my favorites of the year are more likely to win best direction, acting, or screenplay than Best Picture, if that makes sense. I often think, like 80s' thread and premise, that they get the best pictures wrong all the time and even the ones that are nominated to begin with.

Ok, I can't watch the Mariners, so how about a preview mini list for the evening? @Ilov80s and I are going to supplement the main draft with other fun lists and suggestions for movies. Yes, now you know a few movies that won't be on the list, so we will spoil things that way, but often it will also lead up to an upcoming pick. Anyway, in honor of The Peanut Butter Falcon, about this one:

Movies I loved but almost didn't watch because I thought the title was stupid.
  • Son of Rambow - a kid makes his version of Rambo type action movie as he escapes bullies and his family [Paramount+ ]
  • Martha Marcy May Marlene - told in flashbacks Elizabeth Olsen is a woman who escapes a cult. great performance [HboMax ]
  • Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - a horror movie I suggest a lot. it just missed the list getting bumped out by my next horror/comedy on the list. This movie is framed as a documentary crew following a serial killer as he trains to become the next Jason or Michael. Loved it and suggested it so much at the store. It has that perfect blend of making fun of the slasher genre, but then turning into a good version of that same genre. [amc+]
  • Everybody Wants Some!! Don't know why I was so annoyed by this title, but also Linklater is very hit or miss with me. This is the spiritual cousin to Dazed as it follows a team of baseball players in the days leading up to the first day of college. I enjoy it more than Dazed. My first intro to Glen Powell, I believe [mgm+]
  • Hunt for the Wilderpeople name combined with title and I stalled on watching this one. Not a fan of Waititi movies, but this is the exception. [kanopy]
  • Ain't Them Bodies Saints Seriously, wtf? The only reason I tried it was because it had actors I liked - the younger Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster. Like Waititi, I don't like the director's other movies, but I remember liking this a bit, but don't remember it. Mostly I saw the title when going through movies and thought of this category. [parmount+/kanopy]

Haven’t heard of any of those except the Linklater one. Now I know how all the other posters feel ;)

Dammit, I forgot another one:

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping Hated everything about this title and cover of the movie. Now I love everything about this one. So stupid and funny. Meadows and Samberg are perfect for this.

Maybe that should be the new shtick - no posts until the movies are guessed correctly.

#119: JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH - 32PTS
This movie is really underseen, got totally lost in COVID. It takes the story of the death of Fred Hampton and wraps it in a crime thriller as we follow the petty criminal placed inside the Black Panthers by the FBI as an informant. Great crime action movie even if you have no real interest in the Fred Hampton story.
#120: EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE - 31PTS
This one dropped on my rewatch at home. It wasn’t as funny or as emotional. Not sure if it’s the uniqueness of it all wasn’t as novel anymore or the setting. I am going to sound like a broken record here but I saw this in the theater and that’s how movies should be seen. The movie had the crowd rolling in contagious laughter the whole way through. Hot dog hands and racacoullie killed me. We had no idea what we were seeing, it was a trip. But it also had some killer action sequences and it made me cry twice. I got home and have my wife a genuine emotional hug.

First, why can't you see the M's game? Probably for the best....looking ugly.

But, regarding this movie, I think we've discussed this in the past. This one left me possibly the most disappointed I've ever been for a "sequel". I actually disliked this one.

Assume this means Sasquatch Sunset made the cut?

oh yeah, EEOAO was ok

Ov-Ver Ra-Ted
sure, I agree. It's not a masterpiece but its pretty decent

I found it quirky for the sake of being quirky, and not in an old school Wes Anderson way (like before it was apparent that’s all he could do)
It was maximalist entertainment. Broad humor, quirky humor, kung fu fights, emotional family drama. It’s way beyond quirky imo, it’s ****ing nuts.
