The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the top 100!! (19 Viewers)

Based on our point structure for the top 100 we are looking at movies that if they were on just one of our lists were sitting at #57 or higher OR they were on both lists.

For example at #86 we have 80s' #47 because that was worth 54pts, then at #85 we have one that scored 54pts because it was the next one on both our lists and combined for 54 pts (my #97 and his #51). We had 36 on both lists, but 32 of them are in the top 100 because of the boost in points being on both lists. Being a top 20 required being on both lists because that movie scored 102pts..

#58 on 80s' list.
oh so he's the one with good taste
I remember being so excited hearing about Pan’s Labyrinth. It must have been Siskel and Ebert I think? I took my girlfriend to see it, it was such a cool blend of harsh reality and the fantastical. She was a big Lord of the Rings fan so I hit a home run on that movie recommendation. Relationship didn’t last too long after that but we’ll always have Pale Man.

Our last two are a French movie by an American director and the other movie that takes place where the director was born. One about a man trapped without a way to communicate and the other about the start of WW2.

Ohhh ohhhh I know them. I can also say I watched your movie from this pairing and it just was such a big no for me. Not that it was bad. Not at all. I was just way too uncomfortable with the movie and the subject matter. That’s scarier to me than any horror movie.

Saw it for the first time recently? I agree, it's terrifying to think about that and be put in that pov.

I actually think I watched way back when you had those threads where you picked a year and a then we all ranked movies from it. It was one I watched based on your recommendation but I don’t do well with medical stuff like that.

Makes sense, it is part of the greatest year for movies from the 21st century.

#99 - THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY - 45PTS

KP's #56 ranked movie.

#98: THE PIANIST - 45PTS

80s' #56 ranked movie.
I mentioned earlier that The Right Stuff- First Man- Apolo 13 makes in my mind an unofficial trilogy. For me, The Pianist makes an official movie series with a film that will appear later.

Has anyone else watched The Pianist recently? Gosh damn what a good movie.

#100: ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND - 44PTS

#57 on KP's list
Huh. Figured this would be higher. I loved it and found it a very emotional watch. Now, it came out during my Lost Years and matched up with my mindset at the time very well. Dunno if I would feel differently watching it now when I’m in a better place.

I rewatched it recently, still loved it, but didn't like it quite as much as i used to. Still pretty high on the list, but a slight drop in ranking.

I also linked them in the OP, but here are our previous 2 countdowns from the 80s and 90s.

I tell everybody to go in fresh and to stick with One Cut of the Dead. This one and Deathgasm are the two newest entries into my core horror/comedy rotation for the Halloween season. I almost did bail on it as I wasn't prepared for how low budget it was. It won me over and by the 3rd act I was in love. Such a fun, original movie.

The Raid: Redemption is one of the few straight action movies on my list. Like HP is was basically a vote for both in the series, but I just listed one here. As simiplistic as video game plot, but the action is great and is about non-stop once it kicks off.

Eternal Sunshine still packs a punch and Carrey and Winslet are great it in. I love the heart and weirdness of this one, it just dropped in the ratings a little as others above it I am more likely to rewatch.

Diving Bell is an absolutely heartbreaking and also uplifting movie. Great performance by the lead, and I was reminded of him and this movie after he popped up in another of my favorites from the 21st century.

Tomorrow morning's pair will be two movies about discovering and proving the truth. It could be a family members unbelievable stories or help clearing a lover of a crime.

The trio after that have weird things in common. Two are coming of age school stories. Two are about somebody leading a double life. Two feature fractures and trauma with parents, and the same two are Oscar winners and repeat directors already in our countdown. One got turned into a TV show.

As for the trio, what I mean is that if the movies coming up are A, B, and C - A and B are coming of age school stories, B and C are about somebody leading a double life, and A and C are described with parent issues and Oscar winners. B got made into a TV show.

#96: IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK - 46PTS

80s' #55 movie
IMO this is Barry Jenkins best movie, not Moonlight (you will have to wait to see if KP feels differently). The soundtrack is especially great. It's one I listen to a lot when I am relaxing, reading, etc. Now hopefully he's done with stupid BS like that Mufasa movie and can get back to making something interesting again.

#97: BIG FISH - 46PTS

KP's #55 movie
I liked Big Fish a lot. I don’t really recall much outside of the Buddy Holly song sequence and the ending though

Oh and Albert Finney not wanting to drink his ensure

My kid might do a musical version in the spring (didn’t know there was one) but I guess they got a new theatre teacher so if the old one didn’t already purchase the rights sounds like they have some other options. I guess the kids suggest Grease but the old teacher thought it was too risqué or something

:tumbleweed:

Thumper rule, or we still at movies people haven't seen?
At the risk of appearing - 'something" I guess - I'll be 100% transparent. I'm not interested in the subject matter of If Beale Street Could Talk. And it looks really melodramatic.

I think I liked Big Fish. But I'm not much of a Tim Burton fan in general.

This one has been on my list, but haven’t been able to find on any of my streaming services. I started to watch on a plane at one point (or at least thought about it), but turned off when realized not safe with kids around.

While I haven’t seen it, I have listened to the soundtrack and love that. Britell is one of my favorite composers.

Oh

Oh yeah it is melodramatic but I like that Douglas Sirk, Tennessee Williams, Nicholas Ray type stuff.

I think chances are high most will have seen 5 of the next 8 picks. If not,

Now, one will probably be met with crumbles and a Raiders-esque reaction and another might leave people wondering wtf its on somebody's list, but people have seen them.

Lady Bird is a great movie, it would have been in my next wave of 100 movies picked. So many 8/10 or higher rated movies that I had to leave behind. I just had to make room for 10/10 gems like the next one on my list....

I had approached @Ilov80s about a silly idea of giving each other vetoes for the top 100. We could kick a movie off the combined countdown and replace it with something similar or that could be connected somehow. We decided not to, and good thing because one I was sort of eyeing up is his next one and that might have started us on a dark path the rest of the way.

#95: LADY BIRD - 47PTS

#54 on 80s' list, and also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list.
I watched this with my wife, sister and daughter.
I thought it was pretty average, even with the good cast.
Then I asked all 3 of them what they thought and I was expecting to get a full summary of all the subtleties and good points of the film that I had missed.
I was pretty surprised that all 3 said Meh.
Summary: it's just average.

My next pick is a Korean horror movie and the first of the 21st century to scare me and make me want to watch more and more foreign horror movies. The very first was Audition, but that is a 90s movie. Oddly, it's a scene with a burlap sack in both movies that seemed to scare me and stick with me the most.

The next tie are one from 80s and that is about a famous murder with a title that annoyed people and my highest rated R/raunchy comedy from era. Movies I have in the same category as Step Brothers. We have one more higher overall but that was the one we agreed on. It was one I just rewatched recently.

School of Rock isn't going to win awards, but we watch this one even more than Kicking and Screaming. It is also higher on the list because I would and have watched this by myself, KaS I would not. I like the interplay with the kids, I like the music - especially the final performance, and the side characters are funny. A fun family movie I needed to have on the countdown and one of the first I would grab. I gave 1 more non-animated family movies a surprising number of points, so just one more like this. Pretty sure 80s only has an animated movie on the countdown left, so that will be a mini-countdown tonight with some leftovers on the list.

Unlike many movies that have been made into stage musicals, I think this one really worked, also

Yeah School of Rock is awesome and the perfect use of Jack Black who typically annoys me.
