The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (21 Viewers)

#28: WHIPLASH - 95PTS

#71 on ilov80s' list and #36 on KP's list. Also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list
If I’d ranked my list this would be top 20. These are my favorite performances from JK Simmons and Miles Teller. Such an intense film with great music.

Paul Reiser and Melissa Benoist also are pretty great.

And the final scene is ****ing awesome.

I will start the top 20 in the morning. I think there are a lot of surprises in store here - I think we might catch people off guard with 50% of these. 9 were also on Marco's list.

Most of them are drama movies, but even in those there is a blend of thriller, sci fi, war, and romance in those movies. 4 more foreign language movies. 2 I would consider straight comedies, but a couple more I would argue deliver consistent laughs. These are the undisputed greatest 20 movies of the 21st century!! :stirspot:

#22: THE PRESTIGE - 99PTS

#2 on KP's list
Interesting that this popped up now, as I rewatched it for the first time in years yesterday. It's a really fun, well-done movie, Even with remembering some of the twists, it's an enjoyable watch.

It does get a little odd as we go back to movies that were lower on our lists as we get into the top 20, but I still like our system and the ones we both had should get a bump up the list a bit. I also like how the top 20 turned out, so there is that as well.

This one being #2 wasn't surprising as I did my list, but only having 2 movies from Christpher Nolan on it was. For people playing along, that means there is only 1 more Nolan movie on the list. 80s had The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, and Memento so far, but nothing else has shown up. That is a few of his movies that I would guess other people have high on their personal lists, but we didn't.

As for The Prestige - it just might be the movie from this era, not a kids/animated movie, that I have seen the most. I do love Nolan's movies and the way they look, but often they bog down on multiple rewatches for me as they tend to be overly expositional or once I know some of the twists and turns the "magic" is gone from the movie for me a little. With The Prestige, I found it more rewarding on the rewatches and found the choices they were making darker and more destructive to the people around them. Sure, if you think about what is going on it is a little bit silly - but this is a sci fi/fantasy movie at it's core so you have to let your imagination go a little bit and enjoy the ride. I think there is something to this being adapted from a book and not from an original idea that Christopher and his brother then need to overexplain during the course of the movie like others, but it still touches on ideas of time/memory/obsession that his other movies have. Love it.

#21: CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON - 99PTS

#2 on Ilov80s' list, and also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list
This came out around the same time as Memento and was another movie I am pretty sure Siskel and Ebert hyped up. This blew me away in the theaters. We had an old timer Vietnam vet who I worked with who considered himself a student of Asian culture and we spent a lot of time discussing this. It was just so unlike anything I had ever seen. I had watched some Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee- while I loved those movies they just felt like stunt pieces. Crouching Tiger felt like a full on real epic movie. Like it was Lawrence of Arabia but with the most fantastical fight scenes I had ever saw. I didn't know an action/martial arts movie could also be so elegant.

Jokes aside... I quickly made a list yesterday of about 30 movies that I would have in my top 100, but those have not made the list yet.
Intersting that the first 30 you thought haven't appeared at all. I am curious what they are. There's 1 big one that in retrospect I wish I had l listed. I am not sure why I cut it from my list a couple weeks ago and that's just on me. I guess like in a fantasy draft where you draft someone and then right after ar wondering why you did that because you never draft that player or they weren't even next up in your rankings. Who knows what we are thinking sometimes.

It wasn't the first 30 movies I thought of, rather movies I enjoy that havn't made your list yet. I listed movies from a range of factors; storytelling, acting, things my family and I quote, re-watchability, etc.

I have quite a few movies that used comic or graphic novels as the source material, but only a single Marvel entry... if that makes sense? For the MCU, rather than listing my top 3, I simply listed Avengers. I don't how any top movie list from this century doesn't acknowledge what the MCU did through it's first three phases.

I gotcha that makes sense. As anyone can tell from the list so far, the top isn’t likely to be very comic inspired.

What are some of the big movies that people expect won't make our list? I count 5 or 6 that I think we could get some grief over.
I know its chic to be down on superhero movies these days, but there were more than a few that were actually good.
We had The Dark Knight but I’ve never gotten into the superhero stuff. I didn’t like the 70s/80s Superman stuff. I tried a couple Marvel movies that people said were actually good. They just weren’t for me.

100% there were, they just weren't as good as other action movies i listed. Superhero movies have no rewatchibility for me. I wont put something on a list i won't rewatch myself. My "action" movies lean more practical and less green screen action looking for glowing orbs. ;)

There is a shortage of action films too.

Really? We have everything from Top Gun to The Raid to Edge of Tomorrow on the list.

We also warned there would probably be fewer action than other people's list. Action is replaced with horror for me. Action movies often bore me or don't hold up on rewatches.
 i couldn't make it through a John Wick movie

But some of the biggest franchises appear set to be left off.

Please don't get me wrong on the comic talk... I appreciate the heck out of this list so far and intend to watch several of the movies that have been added.

I'm also excited for the top 20 to see how many more Tarantino/Scorsese movies make it, does Nolan/Anderson make another appearance, where do the Coen Bros place, what comedy/horror might sneak in, will another pixar/animated movie rank?

Such as?

I am sure my reply is the same. If the ffa demographic, i get that i watch way fewer action movies than most might. Too much cgi in that genre, and that is not my thing.

Yeah my biggest regret that I referenced above is from a pretty popular long running franchise

There should be at least one Bond and Mission Impossible movie each on this list.

I have seen exactly 1 Bond movie and the couple MI movies I've seen were good, but not rewatches for me.

No worries. I did like Batmans, Spideys, Iron Man, Cpt America and others. Just not more than the ones i listed and they aren't something i will ever watch again unless my daughter wants to watch some.

#22: THE PRESTIGE - 99PTS

#2 on KP's list
I like this movie but #2 of the last quarter century seems high.
This is the reaction i expected. Over the years it became one of my comfort food rewatches. Not sure if i talk about it much, but my top 5 were pretty well set in stone.

I lied... there are two Marvel movies, but only one for MCU:

Avengers (MCU)
Logan
Watchmen
Kick ***
Scott Pilgrim
Sin City

Avengers is the pinnacle of the MCU, but im fine with it being left out

Logan is great

Really liked watchmen too

Kick-*** and Scott Pilgram…meh

I loved Sin city when it came out. Haven’t seen it in quite awhile so not sure how it holds up but I watched that one several times

I’m just glad Black Panther didn’t make it

I don’t think any of the MI movies reach that level to me. After 3 they all kind of blur together. I like them but never great.

I'll admit. They're no Peanut Butter Falcon.

Or i'm not 14 years old. ;)

I'm 56 and re-watch the MCU timeline once a year - I get why some people might not like them, but they hit the right amount of nostalgia (despite not having read a comic book in 40 years) and escapism for me. They also have great humor and the some of the storylines are much deeper than normal action movie fare.

I know a Marvel movie will likely never get the respect it deserves but the Avengers: Infinity War/Avengers: End Game combination which completed the storyline of the 10 years of movies before it was an incredible achievement.

Other than the wildly underrated Constantine. I think that Endgame was good, as well as the first Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. Watchmen and Logan were great. Kick-*** is a lower tier movie for me but I think it might make the list. The Icredibles and Into the Spiderverse were good. The first Deadpool. The first Tom Holland Spiderman. I liked the Ed Norton Hulk. I liked the First Thor and Venom movies. Cpth America. Big fan of Hellboy.

Kill Bill and Dreed should be here. Snowpiercer

A few things in this post - I have also never read comics/graphic novels and don't understand the draw there so I also don't have any nostalgia that way. I was impressed with what Marvel did with the storyline and how it all came together, and like I have said - there were some I really liked and would probably have a couple in my next 100 movies. I agree there is more to the movies than I expected when my son started getting into them.

I also seem to have hangups that most people don't have when it comes to CGI. When I watch and rewatch movies, a lot of the "magic" for me is figuring out how they pulled it off or set up shots. That is a big portion of my love of movies, and that is gone when I know the answer is computer + green screen for 90% of action movies from this era. I liked Casino Royale, I liked a MI movie, I liked the Bourne movies, etc.. I just don't love or rewatch many of those. I have a sprinkling of action movies in my top 100, but for me it's never going to get much above 10% of the movies I watch. It's mostly dramas and horror with sci-fi and comedy next. I've never been a big action movie guy, but when I do watch one it's most likely an 80s/90s movie.

True. Also not close to being the same type of movie or going for the same thing.

I read this and think - would you have anything but action movies in your top 100?
