The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (5 Viewers)

Here are a few on my list with no shot at being in the top 10 I wanted to pimp:

Headbanger's Ball (#23): absolutely essential watching for me and shaped a lot of my music in High School.

Ask the StoryBots (#28): Anybody with young kids, grandkids, or who partake at night please give this one consideration. This NF show was a favorite of the KP household (probably more the adults) when my daughter was younger. A fun program about different topics they explain to kids with great guests from Snoop to Kevin Smith to Weird Al. LOVE this show.

Atypical (#38): As much as I bag on NF, here is another show I loved from the service. Again, I love shows that make me laugh and cry in the same episode.

M.A.S.K. (#70) : More just to give a shout out to a show I remember loving as a kid. "Mobile Armored Strike Kommand" was right up there with Ninja Turtles and Transformers for me. I had a set of toys and everything. Another show I have never met anybody IRL who knows what the hell I am talking about with this one. I am sure one of you fellow nerds probably did, though.

Hell yeah MASK! I had some of the toys as well

Assuming I didn’t miss these in the Top 300 these didn’t make the cut for me

42 - Eastbound and Down - Danny McBride as a washed up ex baseball closer. Typical McBride stuff but good supporting cast with Steve Little as Stevie and Katy Mixon before she bulked up

54 - you’re the worst - already covered

60 - You Can't Do That On Television -sketch comedy for kids on Nickelodeon that I grew up with. Not sure how it holds up but I let the nostalgia get this one in there

61 - The Deuce - David Simon project (The Wire Guy) about the porn industry in 1970s New York. Really good characters and you can just feel the grime of the city. Highly recommend this one

64 - Tales from the Crypt - HBO horror anthology series from the early 90s

65 - Preacher - can’t remember if this Ken made the top 300? A preacher who literally has the voice of god. But there’s also vampires and battle angels and cults and stuff. It’s really out there but good story and good fight scenes with a little dark humor

68 - The State - MTV sketch comedy show with lots of familiar faces. I need to find this one and give it a rewatch.

69 - Hardcore TV - already covered this one, HBO r-rated sketch comedy. If you didn’t watch it yet check out the Raging Bullwinkle skit
I like your style dude

Preacher didn't make the list? If not, that's insane. Humper Doo would not approve.

Eastbound and Down should make it for delivering sweet Danny McBride memes alone.

Headbanger's Ball (#23): absolutely essential watching for me and shaped a lot of my music in High School.
I really enjoyed the videos, but couldn't stand Riki Rachtman. And was even worse when pretty boy Adam Curry tried to be a headbanger.
Atypical (#38): As much as I bag on NF, here is another show I loved from the service. Again, I love shows that make me laugh and cry in the same episode.
This was a really good show. Pretty poignant and terrific acting performances.

8 - The Office (US)

Comedy
Score: 1661
Average Rank: 20.7

A mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, tedium and romance.

I've probably seen every episode at least 30 times and I still laugh every time - such a great cast and clever writing.

I didn't watch this when it originally aired, but I've probably seen the whole thing between planes and Comedy Central's constant marathons, including many episodes multiple times. It only ended up at #33 for me because of the disjointed way I've watched it, but otherwise I could see it having been in my top 10.

I have only watched a few episodes. The writing is great and there are some hilarious moments but the talking to the camera and associated interactions bugs me a bit. I think it happens too much so it bothers me. I am not sure why.

Well the show revolved around a documentary crew filming a documentary about the company.

Those sidebars are usually pretty funny.

See, the bolded is what I love about the series and is what sets it apart from other sitcoms. With almost all sitcoms, it seems like all of the lines are people just setting up the next punchline. It often times feels forced, even if the jokes are funny. The Office (and another sitcom yet to be revealed) is much more "natural" sounding for lack of a better word.

My big 2 that are going to miss the

The Underground Railroad (Amazon miniseries)

Based on the Colson Whitehead Pulitzer Prize Winner, National Book Fiction winner, etc from 2016 and directed by the great Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). It takes the idea of the Underground Railroad and turns into a fantastical real underground express that takes escaped slaves through a world of safe houses, slave trackers and bizarre cruelties. It’s gorgeously made and won Golden Globes, BAFTAs, etc. It’s sprawling and obviously quite harrowing but I highly highly recommend it. Not sure why it didn’t get more buzz, maybe Amazon did a **** job promoting it? It’s big time prestige TV.

Small Axe (BBC, Amazon Prime collaboration)

I wasn’t quite sure if this even qualified. It’s listed as a film anthology. Two of its movies played at Cannes. It received a bunch of critics awards that are reserved for movies yet it got Golden Globe TV nominations and Emmy nominations. It’s the most difficult tv vs movie thing to differentiate imo. And it came out during 2020 peak COVID so who even knows if it would have had some theatrical release otherwise.

All 5 movies are written and directed by Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Widows). The only connection is that they all tell a stories about immigrants from the West Indies in 60s, 70s and 80s London. Many of them deal with deeply entrenched racism in the police, courts and education system. However, my favorite movie/episode is Lovers Rock which is 68 minutes of a London reggae house party. Simple as that. DJs set up, people dance, fall in love. Just a great house party with a killer soundtrack. Sight and Sound named it the best film of 2020.

Yeah, i didn't know this existed and would definitely want to watch it.

I know that is the hook for the show. I usually like that type of thing. The side bars can be great. Just for some reason it bugs me for this show enough to not make it great for me. I can't explain why. The style just doesn't hit for me with this show. It's weird. I expected to like it more than I do.

I think it hits the opposite for me and maybe that's why it doesn't land. The interactions with the camera seem forced to me. That might be the best way to describe it.

I want to like it more.

I might be the only guy in the planet that has never seen an episode of The Office. I've seen a lot of clips just never watched an actual episode.

A couple of years ago I gave it a go. I got to season 3 episode 15 Phyllis' Wedding. Painfully awkward. I just couldn't handle how narcissistic Michael was being.

I still can’t believe the office made the top 10
Why? That seemed like a lock to me. One of the most rewatched shows ever and it hits with pretty much every age. Even the kids know about the office.
I will never tire of the show, and even like the post-Micheal seasons. My son even watched them all as did many of the kids in his demographic at the store.

Since we’re doing this now, here were my 3 shows to miss the top 300:

#45 - Good Times - already discussed, but this show was Dy-no-MITE!!

#50 - Alias - super fun spy/action show that I’m surprised didn’t make the cut (especially with how some other similar themed shows fared). How do you not like Jennifer Garner dressing up in various sexy disguises and chasing after bad guys?? ♥️

#63 - Everybody Loves Raymond - Yeah it’s formulaic and yeah there’s a laugh track, but this show never fails to make me laugh. Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle as Marie and Frank Barone put on a masterclass as two of my favorite TV parents ever.

Headbanger's Ball (#23): absolutely essential watching for me and shaped a lot of my music in High School.
I really enjoyed the videos, but couldn't stand Riki Rachtman. And was even worse when pretty boy Adam Curry tried to be a headbanger.

I should have been clear as well. That ranking was despite hating the hosts. I was there for the videos and rare access to metal music of that sort in small town WI.

I was trying to find a place for Raymond. We didn’t watch it during its original airing but watch the reruns almost every night.
In the end I just preferred other shows

I think I was drinking when I submitted my list, as this should have been way higher for me. Shoot, I mean I'm looking at a Dwight mini sculpture and photo in my office right now.

I didn't have many not in the top 300, but here they are.

Jersey Shore - I know, I know, this is pretty terrible, but the original was peak train wreck rubbernecking. The fights, the ridiculousness, the headbutting themselves into a wall. PRetty insane guilty pleasure viewing.

From - Surprised this didnt make it. It's basically Lost without the unresolved plotlines. It's only going 4 seasons, and they already have the ending/resolution planned out. If you like Lost, this is in your wheelhouse.

Tales from the Crypt - Another shocker, this was a classic late night Saturday watch for me as a kid.

V - Just an amazing sci-fi miniseries.

Poirot - Not shocked this didnt make it. My wife got me into these and I fell in love immediately. David Suchet is the best Poirot portrayal and there is loads of content here.

My turn!

@Midnight: Hardwick game show with stand up comedians just cracking jokes, basically, but I loved it and was sad it was cancelled. Haven't tried the CBS reboot with Taylor Tomlinson yet.

Space Ghost Coast to Coast: Somebody got really high at cartoon network and gave a super serious, campy cartoon superhero a ridiculous talk show with his enemies as the supporting cast. Awesome show in the peak of my stoner days.

The Baseball Bunch: Absolutely stunned the nostalgia contingent on this board didn't get this one into the Top 300. Stunned. Was a staple as I was playing little league.

Welcome to Wrexham: Someone else touched on this. I'm sure @titusbramble hates it and hates them.

Derry Girls: Charming little show set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Very funny and feel-good, mostly.

Say Nothing: Another Irish thing, this is a one season show that just recently came out centered on some women in the IRA. Based on a true story.

Hacks: I never really thought about trying this show because it looked terrible, but it's actually not! Very funny, pretty profane, smart in the right places.

You Can't Do That on Television: I don't know. Water. Barfy burgers. Girls.

I did the the original V. The reboot was decent or at least started out good

Those in my top 70 that didn't make the top 300. Mostly nostalgia-related.

What's Happening!!
Eight is Enough
ABC Afterschool Specials
Thirtysomething
The Baseball Bunch
Holocaust (miniseries)
Land of the Lost
Diff'rent Strokes
My So-Called Life
Picket Fences
Solid Gold
Underdog
It's Your Move
Herman's Head
Degrassi Junior High
Emergency!
Don Kirshner's Rock Concert
Salem's Lot (miniseries)
Woody Woodpecker Show
Party of Five
Vega$

What's Happening did make the top 300. As did a few other shows that other people have claimed didn't. Seems like we forgot about the stuff that came in below 200.

I
My ranked shows that did not make the Top 300

12. Odd Couple - previously discussed
36. Guys Grocery Games - I watch this everyday while I make and eat lunch. I like cooking competitions and this one, with it's odd challenges is so much fun.
43. Nathan For You - love the odd comedy and akward situations
51. Welcome to Wrexham - I'm an EPL fan so it's a nice sneak peak into the lower levels of English football, and Rob and Ryan have great chemistry
52. Barney Miller - great cast and guest appearances and so damn funny
59. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom - This was a staple of my childhood and I still love nature shows.
63. American Gothic - Gary Cole starred as a small town sheriff that may just be the devil - and only one child can stop him. Only lasted one season or may be Top 10.
64. Pushing Daises -cancelled after two seasons or it would be higher, Visually stunning and a unique story that played like a live action cartoon.
68. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives - made me want to travel to these places to eat some of those meals
70. The OA - another show cancelled before its conclusion but so interesting and unique it makes the list,

should have ranked Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Watched a whole lot of that show. My family's favorite restaurant was on it too!

Yeah that’s Michael alright. He’s so awful yet somehow always remains kind of likable, it’s the magic trick of the show and Carrell’s performance. Michael does surprise you every once in awhile showing he means well. The episode where he’s the only one who shows up to Pam’s art show and seems genuinely impressed by her art is actually so sweet.

And you can’t help but feel bad for him (and laugh) at episodes like the dinner party where you see just how much he’s humiliated and emasculated by Jan. For my money, that’s the funniest single TV episode I’ve ever seen.

I can’t do post Michael. In my heart, the Pam-Jim wedding was the series finale.

Ditto. I watched the Office UK. When I heard that season 1 of Office US was just a rehash of Office UK, I didn't bother. And I never checked it out after it got better and became a huge hit. I've seen enough clips to know pretty much everything I need to know about it, but I've never watched a full episode.

I think these are mine that missed the Top 300:

  • Drunk History
  • Wolf Hall
  • Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law
  • Celebrity Deathmatch
  • Russian Doll
  • ESPN College Gameday
  • Holey Moley
  • The Roosevelts: An Intimate History
  • Animaniacs
  • Pinky and the Brain
  • Aerial America
  • How to with John Wilson
  • I’ll Be Gone in the Dark
