The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (3 Viewers)

Cant believe GOT is gonna finish so high. The other 3 i expected
I think most people are ranking it on seasons 1-7 and season 8 was a fever dream.
Shows hit us all differently. GOT is my #1 show. Horrible, horrible, rushed, horrible finale included. Just a wonderful story, great cast, epic character development and just the genre of television I really dig. Imo

I was sure this would be number 1. I love this damn show. Even the "down" seasons.
Not enough widespread exposure. I've never seen it. Don't have HBO

It was bad before that.
When did you think it started to get bad?
Memory is a bit hazy, but IMO the drop off started at the end of S4. Some of that is also book issues as well - too many of my favorite characters killed off and the ones I liked were neutered a bit by putting them with uninteresting characters - e.g Tyrion with Dany.

ETA for clarity: When I say drop off, I mean that 1-4 are 10/10, epic TV. That corresponds the end of book 3 which is one of the best books I remember reading. Then 5-6 were more like 8/10 type seasons with characters and episodes that were great, but we start getting into Reek and Sand Snakes and it starts to veer off the tracks a bit. Then 7-8 are more seasons with a couple epic episodes and some great scenes, but it was mostly a turd sandwhich. Average show at best at that point, IMO.

But again, I am guilty of the high ranking because it's just outside of my top 10 as well, but as Krista and others point out I think a top 20 ranking is more appropriate for shows that whiff the ending that bad, not top 5.

Game of Thrones Spoilers

Season 5 had the Cersei walk of shame. Drogon saving Dany in the arena from the Son of the Harpy. Epic. Brienne killing Stannis. Tyrion and Dany meeting. Nightswatch kill Jon!!! Obviously not the best season but strong. Imo

Ok, I have never seen BCS or BB and considering my taste in TV, I know I will like them. Since BCS is a prequel, is it ok to watch it first? I ask because the reason I haven't watched BB is because my wife just couldn't get into it so that makes it harder to power through. I'm hoping maybe she would like BCS if she didn't know it was connected.

A lot of shared characters, not sure if Saul going first works in that order. I would watch in order of when made myself.

I see the debate on starting either first. Gun to my head id prolly watch Breaking Bad first because it gives interesting context. Wonder if Gilligan has answered this question for fans?

You guys have slept on some great shows. I would like to highlight the ones from my list that apparently missed the top 300, in no particular order:

Reading Rainbow (#65) and 3-2-1 Contact (#68): two great PBS staples of my youth. Introduced kids to a wide range of topics and a way to think about the broader world outside your own front door.

The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross (#63): Another PBS icon and piece of true Americana. Peaceful, gentle, and wholesome television unlike anything else in the medium.

My Name is Earl (#41): Speaking of wholesome, this hits on an entirely different level. Funny and sweet and engaging, it's a shame not enough people caught this in its run. Worth seeking out.

The Honeymooners (#66): A classic that still holds up. And Jackie Gleason could act. The "This is Your Life" episode amazes me with how he conveys those emotions.

Australian Survivor (#17): The overseas version of the game I've mentioned in this thread before, it's bigger and better than the US version in every way. Highly recommended to all competitive reality fans as a true experience. Start with the 2018 season 5, "Champions V Contenders" and work your way up, it's amazing TV.

Tiny Toon Adventures (#54): Looney Toons for the modern age. A great update on a classic.

The Offer (#59): This mini-series follows the unbelievable story of the production of The Godfather from just before the first germ of the idea through to Oscar night and is compelling and captivating the whole way through. Perhaps the best glimpse into how movies are really made there is.

Would I Lie To You (#69) and QI (#64): Two great British "panel shows" where improv comedians play within the structure of a game show. WILTY is just laugh-out-loud funny as a comic must read a statement about themselves, and the others must guess whether it's true or not. Can Bob Mortimer rip an apple in half with his bare hands? Did Kevin Bridges once accidentally buy a horse in Bulgaria? Did Claudia Winkleman take her turtle to a pet psychologist because he seemed depressed and stopped scampering around like he used to? Meanwhile, QI is a quick take on all the things you thought you knew but actually don't, or, things you didn't know but really are quite interesting. It explores knowledge in a roundabout way that'll make you laugh until you've got tears in your eyes.

The Toast of London (#67): Yet another British entry on my list, this one follows Matt Berry (of "What We Do In The Shadows" and "IT Crowd" fame) as Steven Toast, actor and voiceover artist full of hubris and stuck in the crazy world of British broadcasting. Consistently funny and entertaining, and just enough truth to how TV works to really hit home in some weird spots. A blast to watch.

The Haunting of Hill House (#62): A horror/thriller miniseries with a great spooky mood and meticulous construction that really sets it apart.

Only Connect (#55): Often called the hardest game show on television. One round inspired the New York Times daily "Connections" game. The premise is simple: 'how do these random things connect?' but the brainpower and lateral thinking required to solve the puzzles is tricky and rewarding. I can't recommend this show enough, and luckily most of them are on youtube. Some examples: What do these 4 items have in common: The Fountain at Caesar's Palace, a crate of rattlesnakes and a tethered mountain lion, Snake River Canyon, and a 90-foot-long shark tank? How about a rocket scientist, Brad Pitt, a car, and Elvis Presley? Or, Beethoven's 7th Symphony, center of gravity, 3rd of November, and the very beginning? What about "Parsley, Endorra, and Aneboda", "Cecil, Meg, and Kvikne", "Elsa, Elphaba, and Pax", and "Simba, Hermoine, and Dombas"? Round two asks you to complete a sequence, can you figure out what comes 4th in order? For example, some easy ones: Chakotay, Kira Nerys, Riker and _____? How about 'Sank into the swamp', 'Sank into the swamp', 'Burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp', and _______?

Plus, my two HONORABLE MENTIONS ranked just outside my personal top-70, but deserve some acknowledgment:

This Old House: Another PBS gem that somehow broke into the mainstream popular culture, educational and entertaining and somehow made home renovation and construction into compelling television, and,

Pointless: Another British game show, best described as "Reverse Family Feud", or the TV version of the FFA's Black Sheep game. A simple concept which makes a much more rewarding game and requires actual brainpower. It's easy: they ask 100 people to name as many things as they can in a finite category. Then the contestants try to name the most obscure answer, unlike Family Feud where you're going for the most popular. It's that simple: lowest score wins. I mean, anyone can guess America's favorite pizza topping. But... with $10,000 on the line, can you think of an actor in Die Hard that 100 other people couldn't? How about a US state or state capital containing the letter "A"? Sure, Alabama gets you 99 points, and you're going to lose to the guy who got 1 point by remembering the A's hiding in St Paul or Carson City. It would have cracked my top-70 if it wasn't padded out to a full hour runtime with a bunch of contestant interviews between every answer. Thankfully, on youtube, it's easy to jump right to the Q & A and the meat of the show. It's just a better game, for smart people, than Family Feud (which did somehow crack the top 300).

Like I posted in my edit - I agree that it was strong. All those great things happen, but IMO are offset a bit by things like Sand Snakes, Ramsay, and having less interesting characters because great others went bye-bye. There is nothing remotely as bad as the Sand Snakes in the first 4 seasons. Still very good TV, but not epic, must-see TV like the first 4.

The Sand Snakes characters were really bad. Ha ha

I've never had any interest in watching The Wire. I had HBO when it was on, and would see the promos when I would watch Six Feet Under. Based on those promos, I had zero interest in checking it out. I'm also averse toward shows/movies where journalists are main characters, because I am one and Hollywood almost always gets the profession "wrong".
I don't think any journalists are main characters on the Wire - sort of in the last season, I guess.
David Simon was a Baltimore journalist.
David Simon also wrote the book that Homicide: Life on the Streets was based on. I really liked The Wire, but I think I liked Homicide better.

I have seen lots of Would I lie to you and its great, but its been running a long time and ive missed well more than half the episodes so couldnt include it, same with 8 out of 10 cats. But 8 out of 10 cats does countdown, seen every episode
Can Bob Mortimer rip an apple in half with his bare hands? - TRUE
Did Kevin Bridges once accidentally buy a horse in Bulgaria? - TRUE
Did Claudia Winkleman take her turtle to a pet psychologist because he seemed depressed and stopped scampering around like he used to? - i think this was a Lie.

Some of these truth/lie situations are hilarious and the way Bob Mortimer constantly befuddles David Mitchell with seemingly absurd tales is worth watching.

As for QI - This is upper class english stuff thats too high brow for me. Im not smart enough too.

Watch Breaking Bad first. For sure. BCS is overlaid over the top. It's not a straight "prequel" in that some of the events happen after (and dramatically recharacterize) what happens in BB.

Lord Cerwyn, your father was skinned alive by Ramsay Bolton. Still you refused the call. But House Mormont remembers. The North remembers. We know no king but the King in the North whose name is Stark. I don’t care if he’s a b@stard. Ned Stark’s blood runs through his veins. He’s my king from this day until his last day.”

Agreed. I don’t think BCS has the same effect with the whole premise if you watch it before BB.

I think as Scoresman has said there’s a clear top 2. I think my original guess at #2 was wrong based on the trends and comments from others. I’m thinking the order of 3/4 is anybody’s best guess.

My shows that did not hit the top 300 (I told you there were a lot of game shows on my list):

32. The Midnight Special. People from the music threads could have guessed this because I am posting random clips from it all the time. The Tonight Show and most other talk shows were mostly rock-free in the '70s, so this was where you could watch the best rock acts of the day perform live. The episode lineups are fascinating as we see the legendary and obscure together.

37. Barney Miller. With impeccable acting and funny scripts, this is the cop show that cops used to say was the most realistic portrayal of their jobs on TV. There's a whole lot of paperwork, waiting around, and dealing with extremely minor complaints. Great theme song as well.

38. Mad About You. An integral part of NBC's "Must-See TV" Thursday night lineup in the '90s that seems to mostly have been forgotten. (Friends was slotted immediately after this show when it debuted.) The last season was awful, but before that, there was some great absurdist humor that wouldn't have been out of place on Seinfeld. The Thanksgiving episode (S3 E8, "Giblets for Murray") is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. (“We had no marshmallows. It was war! … I told myself when the war was over I’d never spend a holiday again without marshmallows. [Pause]. But this is fine.”)

42. The Traitors. As I said when Survivor was revealed, The Traitors is the best reality competition show right now. Its format ensures a compelling ending every time. This is a composite ranking of all English-speaking versions, which are easy to find online. The US version brings together leading lights from reality TV, both gamers (Survivor, Big Brother, The Challenge) and non-gamers (Real Housewives, Bachelor Nation, Summer House), plus randos like siblings of celebrities and retired athletes. Other countries cast all normies or half pseudo celebrities/half normies. In addition to gameplay that is usually interesting, the visuals and costume design are top-notch by reality TV standards.

43. Press Your Luck. BIG BUX BIG BUX NO WHAMMIES STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The current version with Elizabeth Banks and a 30-minute bonus game actually managed to improve on the classic format.

46. Outlander. My wife's favorite show, we bond over it. It's cheesy as hell but sucks you in.

48. Match Game. A relic of another time but incredibly entertaining. A rare opportunity to see celebrities let their guard down. It feels like you are mingling/bantering with them.

50. The Chase. Both the Game Show Network version, which featured titanic British trivia legend Mark "The Beast" Labett, and the ABC version, which has featured Labett and Jeopardy! legends such as Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer. (Fun fact: Holzhauer appeared on the GSN Chase before his Jeopardy! run, and beat Labett.) Three "normie" trivia buffs play against a trivia legend ("the chaser"). If they are not eliminated by the chaser before the "final chase," they get to play against them for a cash prize -- they answer as many questions as they can in 2 minutes, and if the chaser can't match their number of correct answers in their 2 minutes, the normies win. Like Jeopardy!, it rewards intelligence and is easy to play along with.

53. Wings. Fun sitcom about people who work at a small airport in Nantucket. Was created by the same three Cheers writers who also created Fraiser, and had a great cast including Steven Weber, Tony Shaloub and Thomas Haden Church. Some of the Cheers cast members guest starred, playing their Cheers characters.

54. Welcome Back, Kotter. My elementary school self was hooked on this show. It was quite silly (which is why my younger self liked it), but well-written enough to make you care about the characters.

57. Law & Order: Criminal Intent. As I mentioned when regular L&O was revealed, this show fused the L&O formula with the more character-driven shows about crime solvers who think outside the box. If Monk worked in the D!ck Wolf universe, he would probably be something like Vincent D'Onofrio's Robert Goren.

58. Are You Being Served? British sitcom about department store workers who put up with stuffy bosses and hyper-demanding customers; could be seen on PBS in the '70s, '80s and '90s. Another one of those shows where I just wanted to hang out with these people.

64. Animaniacs. In the '90s, this was the spiritual successor to Looney Tunes. Manic and hilarious.

It was going to be this for me if I didn’t pick Kirshner. I just remember seeing Kirshner more on live TV rather than Special - the latter more through YouTube clips. Both were great though obviously.

I might have also gone with American Bandstand but there was too much focus on the awkward dancing.

Since we're doing this:

5 The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson
6 Night Music
8 Desus & Mero
13 Taskmaster
19 The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends
26 Mozart in the Jungle
28 Spaced
34 The Beverly Hillbillies
37 The French Chef
40 The Untouchables
42 Patrick Melrose
43 Scenes From a Marriage (1973)
44 The Phil Silvers Show (aka Sgt. Bilko)
46 At the Movies with Siskel & Ebert
47 The Shock of the New
50 The Little Drummer Girl
51 How To with John Wilson
52 Austin City Limits
53 Soul Train
54 I'm Alan Partridge
55 Full Circle
60 The Galloping Gourmet
61 The Munsters
63 Mission: Impossible
64 The Eric Andre Show a
66 Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures
67 Deutschland 83
68 Formula 1: Drive to Survive
69 Cunk on Earth
70 Hello Ladies

A lot of them are niche or foreign but I'm a little surprised by the lack of love for The Beverly Hillbillies, The Munsters and Sgt. Bilko which still make me laugh. Mission: Impossible is still pretty watchable as well; it's amazing how much plot can be stuffed into an hour including commercials.

53. Wings. Fun sitcom about people who work at a small airport in Nantucket. I had Wings @ 35 and Are you @ 70
