The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (20 Viewers)

I was going to do a list but ran out of time. Womp-womp.

I wonder if anyone besides me would have had Impractical Jokers on their list?

I should have considering my ringtone is "Whose phone is riiiiiinging, Mine! Mine!" (if you know, you know).

Great show that I think I regret not including now.
This is one I regret not having higher now. I forgot about it until the last minute and underestimated just how much all of us watched this one. I agree with some posts that said it dropped off after Joe left, and that was in my thoughts when I ranked. But those first few seasons had us rolling. Weird thing is I think the show was better with Joe, but I never liked many of his punishments. I felt like he was the older brother that didn't really get messed with.

JML mentioned the other ones. I tried the Australian one. It was pretty funny, but the core friendship didn't seem to be as strong, but I liked the swearing and the beefed up punishments, it was still worth checking out.

I had The Mentalist at #70. It was one of the 46-51 reveals that prompted me to send in a mildly revised list -- I just replaced the last three on the list.

I agree with everything said about Simon Baker's performance. In addition, the season 3 finale is one of the best episodes of any TV show I have ever seen. I was riveted the whole time. That's the peak of the Red John series-long arc, not the reveal in the final season. Like NCIS, it was one of those shows where I just wanted to hang out with the characters (minus Red John). When it was on, the hipster TV writers constantly compared it unfavorably with Psych, but they were very different shows that just happened to have a mentalist as lead character, and both worked very well on their own terms.

I started watching The Amazing Race when they had a season (31, I think) that included a bunch of Survivor alums. We liked it well enough to continue with it but have never gone back to watch the seasons before it, so it did not make my list. It's usually an entertaining watch but for me it doesn't reach the heights of Survivor, The Traitors and The Mole. I will never watch Big Brother because it features a bunch of narcissistic influencer wannabees and it makes no sense without keeping track of the live feeds, and who has time for that?

I liked Tom & Jerry as a kid but it hasn't aged well. Hanna-Barbera in general seems vastly inferior to Looney Tunes to me.

On last week's episode of Deal or No Deal Island, one of the female contestants likened something good that happened to "watching Sex and the City for the first time." So obviously there's great appeal to a demographic that I'm not a part of. I've seen a few episodes but it was never something I felt the need to keep up with.

Honorable Mentions!

Here are the top 5 shows from all lists that did NOT make the top 300.

The Late Late Show with Craig FergusonEephus5

I probably should have had The Mole on my list because those first two seasons on ABC were brilliant. The celebrity seasons and the revival on Netflix are OK but don't have the same magic.

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson was a last-minute cut from my list (it was my first draft's #70) after the 45-51s revealed some things that I had missed. For about 2 years early in our marriage, my wife and I watched it regularly before bed, and it was the most deeply weird thing I'd seen on network TV since Late Night with David Letterman in the '80s. Like LNWDL, they would try anything because people staying up that late were more likely to be fascinated by it than repulsed.
I had The Mole on my list, and primarily so high, most because of those first two seasons. I've watched a fair amount of reality TV over the years, and I'm not sure I've ever obsessed over a show like I did the first season of the Mole. Yes, the Celebrity seasons weren't as good, and the Netflix reboot is enjoyable, but those first two ABC seasons were peak entertainment for me.

Yeah, The Mole is another show that I watch but have always felt was better in concept than execution. It's good, but in that fast-food kind of way. I think it's just that there's no clear incentive for how the Mole contestant operates in the game, it's not quite clear how the viewers at home should be watching the show. Plus we're always missing out on a good portion of the Mole Quiz and can't really follow along with the legit contestants either. I guess they feel they need to keep the Mole a secret, although The Traitors does just fine revealing them and their machinations every episode... Maybe somewhere between the two series is the sweet-spot of the Social Deduction genre show? I'm ok with it landing outside the top-300.
Yeah, the problem is that by not letting the audience know who the Mole is, the program can't show any strategy talk, otherwise it would become apparent quickly who the Mole was. But at its best, the social game and the missions are riveting. The final "real" episode of season 1 (before the reveal/reunion) was as compelling as any episode of reality TV I've ever seen.

On the Traitors subreddit every so often, someone starts a thread to say they wish the audience, like the faithfuls, doesn't know who the traitors are. My response to that is -- that show already exists, it's called The Mole. I like that we have one of each.

how did I not even think about

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles

but I doubt anyone else did. It's probably not a top 70 but I remember liking it as a kid but top 300? Heck yeah!

The Practice was one of my all time favorite tv shows, ranked highly on my list. The last season sucks and I won’t watch it. I can’t stand Boston Legal either. It was silly. The Practice was serious drama and the ensemble cast was terrific. For my money it was the best legal show I have ever seen.

So how can we tell if a show didn't make the list? Do we have to wait until the end to know for sure?

There are a couple I'm really curious to know if I was alone or not.

Namely;
#29 - Good Eats (cooking science show with Alton Brown)
#30 - A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix show starring NPH)

They are both shows I was surprised at how much I thoroughly enjoyed them.

Yeah pretty much. It kills part of the suspense of the countdown when you know a show isn’t making it.

My #10 ranked show that did not make the top 300.

Yellowjackets

In 1996, a NJ high school girls' soccer team travels to Seattle for a national tournament. While flying over Canada, their plane crashes deep in the wilderness, and the surviving team members are left stranded for nineteen months. The series chronicles their attempts to stay alive as some of the team members are driven to cannibalism. It also focuses on the lives of the survivors 25 years later in 2021, as the events of their ordeal continue to affect them many years after their rescue.
They should have watched Surviorman.
Which apparently has a better shot at being watched here…
Yellowjackets got a shoutout on Jeopardy today.

I believe getting a shoutout on jeopardy should auto bump a show 50 spots, but I’ll let Scores make the official ruling on this…

@Scoresman is there a semi easy way to see a ranking of who had the most single show entries? That way it’s not ruining it by displaying shows that didn’t make it, and also shows us who the losers are….as an example, steelerfan1 had 35 of 70 shows where he was the only one who listed that show.

I ran through all the USA shows. Some made it on, some didn't even though I've watched them all. I've never felt a desire to go back and rewatch all of either, which is why they got left off mine.

I considered Soap which I rewatched recently. It was great for a season or two and then faded hard. The characters became one note jokes. I don't think I actually finished it on the rewatch.

I like the information provided by John Oliver and he's funny at times but he's way too slanted in one direction for my taste. I prefer a more balanced approach to the reporting aspect he does.

The Terminal List (imo) would have worked better as a 2 hour movie than a 12 hour series .

Never heard of: Documentary Now!; Peep Show, The Up Series, and Atlanta.

Soap was really good (although didn’t make my top 70).
Soap was good but I didn't watch a lot of it. I just liked Benson better for whatever reason. I haven't seen either since they were airing live so I may think differently now.
That Mrs. Kraus on Benson annoyed the crap out of me.

Soap was pretty revolutionary at the time with Billy Crystal portraying a gay character.

Atlanta was an objectively very good show. I just didn't really enjoy watching it for some reason. Kind of like "I May Destroy You" or "Severance." Very good shows that, for whatever reason, I didn't enjoy watching. So I didn't put them on my list.

Batman: TAS was really well done, not enough to make my list, but good show

I only recently started watching Peep Show, so I didn't know it well enough to list it. Now I'll have to dive in and see if it holds up.

Big, big fan of Batman: The Animated Series. They did some stuff I thought impossible for a kids after-school cartoon show. Plus, they came up with the Harley Quinn character, not the comics. Really deserves to be higher.

Frontline presents depth to today's news better than anyone and faster than you'd think possible. Deserves more people watching.

I was probably absurdly high on Documentary Now! It is one of those niche shows that I can see appeal to some more than others. Does the idea of Bill Hader and Fred Armisen doing take-offs of Grey Gardens and Jiro Dreams of Sushi appeal to you? If so, you might enjoy it. If you have no idea what the words coming out of my mouth mean, then maybe not.

I had Frontline on my list too. Yeah, I like documentaries.
