I was beginning to think I'd never have a show on here again. I haven't seen one episode of like the last 20 shows, and it made me realize I don't watch a lot of TV.

But I've seen every single episode of Survivor. I was a rare one who didn't watch the first season as it aired in the summer of 2000 and became a thing. I started with the premiere of season 2 after the Super Bowl in 2001. Went back and got season 1 on DVD through Netflix a few years later. Now we're on season 48. It's certainly had its ups and downs but I'm still watching.

I used to watch a lot of Survivor, but its been years since I watched consistently.

Honestly in terms of drama/strategy, The Traitors has surpassed Survivor by a lot IMO.

Australian Survivor is a better show than the US version. I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone who's ever enjoyed regular Survivor.

I'm the exact same. Missed 1 started with 2. I've probably missed 5-10 seasons over the years and haven't caught 48 yet, but watching and then calling home to my mom is one of the things that's consistently happened since I was 18.

Very few shows make it this long and remain this popular. If we were truly trying to do some kind of "Greatest" vs just our FBG list of favorites, Survivor would have to be in the top 10. Cultural impact, ingenuity, commercial success, longevity, influence on television overall, etc - all extremely high marks.

I wonder how many of our rankers just didn't rank reality at all, similar as to how sports talk or other talk shows and stuff didn't even cross my mind to rank.

Actually, it's way higher here than on other lists. It doesnt even show up on the aggregated IMDB top 250 shows.
Isn't that a similar average rating of the world of TV watchers? Don't think that's what I meant.

Cold War spy thriller. Nostalgia from the 80’s. Both leads are great and the story has a ton of believable tension with the back drop of the Cold War. Definitely think folks should give it a try.

Interesting. Never heard that. Can you briefly elaborate? Is it the casting? Different rules?

Casting is way better, for sure. They intentionally cast for interesting dynamics, not just who has the most social media followers. For example, they cast a gym rat with a Napoleon complex... short guy with big muscles who think's he's the strongest and most athletic guy ever... and on the other tribe is a 6'10" rugby/football hall of famer who crushes him over and over again, but the short guy never accepts he's ever beat. The players also play harder... they're smarter about the game and the strategy, and are "into it" way more.

Also, it's just "bigger", there are more contestants and they stay out there longer and shoot more episodes. I think it's like 50 days instead of the US's 24. They air episodes three nights a week so you get like 24 episodes instead of just 13. And the challenges are bigger, too. Like, in the US version, the bread-and-butter challenge is Simmotion, where they drop a ball bearing down a spiral track, have to catch it at the bottom and put it back, then keep adding more ball bearings. It's a staple. In the Australian version, they use bowling balls and the set is 20 feet high and they're climbing up ladders for half an hour. In the Australian final endurance challenge one year, the contestants had to stand on little poles until they got tired and dropped out. They set it at the edge of a cliff and the tide would rush in and explode up a hole in the rocks and spray the contestants with frigid water every 30 seconds, and that's when they do the family visit and bring out the contestant's loved one to plead with them to hang in there so little Timmy can get his braces fixed or whatever, and they keep going for like 12 hours... it's just way more intense all around.

It's the same show just turned up to 11 and with way more interesting players.

- 80s nostalgia

- Keri Russell's butt

This point about The Americans having a very satisfying conclusion is really important to how I ranked my shows, especially at the top. So many shows run for too long or are cancelled or change producers, and end up underwhelming by the end. Shows that have good, concise endings weighed incredibly heavy on my list.

It's also why I'm a late comer to shows like Westworld, Dexter, Deadwood, etc. that did not end as well as they should have I might be missing some great TV, but without a good ending to look forward to, I sometimes ask what's the point of even watching. It's like reading a novel but you can only read the first 3/4 of the book.

Yeah, the 80s nostalgia is there just because it's so realistic. It truly "feels like" the 80s, but in a much more realistic way. It's an "oh there are people getting divorced, the average joe doesn't really care about the cold war, the appliances are harvest gold or olive green" type of background nostalgia - not the "hey look! kids going to arcades, playing D&D and wearing fluorescent clothing!" 80s type of nostalgia that Stanger Things, The Goldbergs, and the like focused on.

The acting and writing make this show excellent for me. As far as "spy thriller", while that is certainly real and present, I think of this show as more of a character study than a thriller.

It's not that nostalgia-driven, other than the cold war fears were a lot higher in the 80's than the 90's.

ive tried starting this 3x and have quit each time. i don't know why i stop, as it is captivating. going to have to stick with it one of these times.
My wife was in this group as well. We must have watched the first 3 episodes 4 times over the years, and she always bailed. When she ended up being out of town for a couple of weeks, I binged the entire series (all 75 episodes). I didn't put together a list, but it probably would have been in my Top 5. I thought it was consistently good throughout. IMO, there are too many shows that are good for the first few seasons and then start to taper off. I can't think of anything I didn't enjoy about it.

I figured I’d be the Big Pickle for The Americans, and I was right, and am really happy to see it so well regarded here. Just a very tight story and as someone kind of said, is still very character-driven probably even more than it’s plot-driven. Very tense and I think very fair treatment of the political backdrop. The most common criticism of the show seems to be centered on Paige, and I shared that to some extent, but when I binged it the second (and third) time I realized she was exactly as she needed to be. I’d dare say she nailed it, in fact.

Tragedy, humor, thriller all in one. And Keri Russell’s butt.

So if you were born in the 90s...maybe not that high on my new list of stuff to get from our countdown?

It's not that nostalgia-driven, other than the cold war fears were a lot higher in the 80's than the 90's.
Agreed - other than the heightened Cold War of the time and the clothes/hairstyles, I wouldn’t call it a period piece per se.
Music too. Especially the finale.
Yes - can never hear that tune any other way now.

I might be missing some great TV, but without a good ending to look forward to, I sometimes ask what's the point
The point is the journey......not the destination
If one based shows on high quality endings, the number to watch would be disappointingly low. Most shows don’t stick the landing and/or are just meh.
...and then there's a ton of shows that just end.

That depends on the show. Watch something like Lost or Severance, and don't try to say a huge part of it isn't getting to the end to understand what was going on. Something more episodic, not so much.

But my tastes in TV have skewed heavily towards serial shows. And I absolutely want a good ending to them.

That said, I'm about to watch Westworld for the first time. I'm skeptical I'll make it through it based on reviews of later seasons but we'll see.

Yep, unless this proposed and wildly unnecessary season surprises me, Ted Lasso might drop out of my Top 75 altogether. I have it at 50 on the strength of the first season and then the mild decline in the subsequent seasons, but felt they stuck the landing. Overall, like most, I was surprised by what the show ended up being in a good way.

Don’t know how I missed ranking this one but would definitely have been top 70 for me. And wish they would leave it alone and not try to re-up it again.

I mostly agree, but I also feel like if they reset with a completely new story arc, it could be good. The characters and writing were good enough.

If it's just a money grab that needlessly extends the previous storyline, forget it.

I have a feeling Season 4 is going to be a money-grab low quality show.

It doesn't even make sense to have a Season 4 based on how the show ended (it did end already).

Is Ted going to now abandon his son and go right back to England?

My guess is that Sudekis gets about 1 to 2 minutes every other episode when he calls coach Beard to see how it's going.

Thanks for the double pickle but I believe I had the show at #3. I debated it going #1 but just couldn't quite put it there. The top 2 on my list were just too good and had more longevity to pass up

This is so weird. I dont know how this got swapped with your number 1 on the spreadsheet. I'll correct this at the end with other corrections. Wont make a huge difference.

Ted Lasso

Probably overstayed its welcome a bit, but so what!

I'm guessing that, at most, I have 8 picks left to appear. I know four will, and I can't think the other four won't, but anything else I've picked (particularly the UK stuff) would have been out already if it's going to show at all)
