The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (6 Viewers)

I’m halfway through AD or it would maybe rank higher. Listen to the Smartless podcast with Arnett and Bateman - they have great chemistry.

I've never seen an episode so it didn't make my list. I'm sure I'll love it, but I hate narration for the most part. Top of the queue.

I also didn't list the Leftovers after having only seen the 1st season. But I'm watching it now after this countdown remind me and season 2 is a barn burner. Great show.

Baby we got a stew going! Didn't submit a list, but would have been top 5 easily. I rewatch seasons 1-3 at least once a year. Amazing cast, nonstop jokes/gags and so clever. Happy to see it this high.

There have been some very uneven seasons for this show.
First season was great, but the repetition and lack of an overall story arc makes it just seem like a cash cow at the moment.
Cohesion would help, but as this show is still live it could swing either way in my rankings.
At first the nostalgia was cute, but its become a parody of late.
Several of the actors have outgrown their characters age severely as well.
At its best, highly rated. Anyone think this finishes on a good note?
Season one was awesome.

Season two stunk.

Season three was very solid.

Season four was outstanding.

Season 5 imo should wrap it all up nicely.

I have AD so low since its been a long time since I've seen it and I barely remember it but I do remember liking it so that's why it made my list.

Very pleasantly surprised by this ranking.

This was the show (out of the 4 that made my list) where I said Olyphant was part of an ensemble cast for one season of a show.

Two more still to come and I'm almost positive both will make it.

I don’t care what folks think of the final season- Lost was the greatest water cooler discussion TV show ever. The Easter eggs, the websites and phone numbers, the overall mystery sucked people in like few shows ever. Sure, they screwed up the end but those first 3-4 seasons were gold.
I am one of the few (I think few) that think they actually stuck the landing - at least on an emotional level.

For me it was always about the characters - and even poor old Ben Linus gets his atonement in the end.

Everyone talks about The Constant being one of the best episodes of anything ever - and they're not wrong.

In hindsight I feel like I have Lost a little high, but maybe not

I didn’t watch S1 when it aired, ended up borrowing the DVD from my friend and I think we binged it in a couple days right before S2 started

I really can’t think of another show as captivating as Lost though, especially with all of the week to week speculation and searching for clues, theories, etc

Unfortunately it didn’t end great, but the initial journey was some of the most fun I’ve had with a series. Except for Paulo and Nikki…they were terrible

Incredibly funny, with lines that still get quoted constantly all these years later, and an absolutely stacked cast.

One of the things I loved about it is, as time went on, we learned that Michael was almost as venal and dysfunctional as the rest of his family. He thought he was above it all, but in the end, he really wasn’t.

This one was a huge whiff and would be a little higher if I wasn't such a dunce. It would be in the top 15 for me as well. It was probably the only show I will miss now that I don't have NF. I will track it down and buy at least the first 3 seasons soon.

So many amazing characters and lines.
Like Star Trek, it was way ahead of its time and got cancelled in the middle of its third season. 🤔

Yes, they biffed the ending. I don’t care. It was the best thing on TV for its first two seasons (and the second half of the third season). I was absolutely obsessed with it and it was what prompted me to seek out TV discussion forums on the internet; before that I had mainly stuck to music and sports when surfing the web.

Seasons 4-6 had their moments even if the quality dipped a bit.

I was obsessed enough that I watched a whole bunch of successor series featuring various members of the Lost cast. Person of Interest was the best of those and I blew it by not putting it on my list.

It is, as is the S3 finale.

I agree that the ending worked on an emotional level but I think it could have been improved from a storytelling perspective.

I bailed on Lost about halfway through. I guess I was losing interest and constantly hearing that the ending sucked (I watched after the fact) so just stopped.

I did not. Their existence doesn’t change anything I said. FOX didn’t understand what it had.

I think serialized TV shows have a two built in problems.

First, there's always the threat of cancellation so the showrunners start with a collective one hand tied behind their back. There's no way of planning out a show where the season fit together perfectly for 3, 4, 5 etc. seasons because there's no way to know it'll last that long.

Second, it seems to me that the longer they go, the more the audience gets invested in how they WANT the story to proceed and/or end. When the story doesn't go the way they hoped, there's an increased dissatisfaction with it. Three of my favorite shows are Battlestar, Lost, and Westworld. All three have received the same criticism of "started great, ended lousy". And I just don't get it.

I think what is required is similar to the "suspension of disbelief" idea. Let the story tell what it wants to tell and don't worry so much if the t's and I's aren't crossed and dotted perfectly - it's just a story. Sometimes it's easier to suspend that disbelief/give leeway than it is others, no doubt.

That would have been me as the other voter. What did you think of this season Scores? I wasn't a huge fan compared to first 2.

I think I did like the first two better as well, but knowing they have a plan to wrap things up soon with an ending that is already planned has me hopeful.

I really like Harold Perrineau in it though. I really didn't like his character in Lost but love him in From.

For a variety of reasons, some of which you mentioned, some economic, and some practical, among others, we're about to see a bit of a shift over the next few years away from serialized shows as streaming services are discovering additional value in "procedural" shows in which each hour's episode is a single story, without any overarching lore, more like "Law & Order" than the 'grander' big-scope, high-concept shows we've seen more frequently in the last decade.

Fargo was tough for me to rank

Season 1 was really good. Season 2 was good
I didn’t finish Season 3 and never started Season 4 but I didn’t pick it back up for Season 5 which also was really good

I probably should watch the other 2 seasons at some point. This is probably one of the few shows I ranked where I haven’t seen every episode
I liked season 1 and 2 of Fargo. Didn't finish season 3, but don't remember why. Didn't finish season 4, because I didn't like it. Haven't seen any of season 5.

Season 3's villain is good, but grotesque and hard to watch. And Ewan McGregor can't get the accent right. But the story ended up pretty good - who doesn't like Carrie Coon?

Could never get into Lost. Maybe because it aired around the same time as 24, and more happened in ten minutes of 24 than a whole series of Lost. Boring quickly.

Meh, not sure how I feel about this. Outside of sitcoms, the shift to serialized shows really corresponds to the increase in quality you see on cable streaming options compared to network TV over the years. Sounds like it's cheaper to make procedural rehashed stuff like a bazillion Law & Order spinoffs. Then watch the quality of TV overall fall tremendously.

A good middle ground would be anthology series. Keep seasons contained, but you dont need the years long commitments.

Six months ago I'd have had Arrested Development in the top 30.

But then I sat down to do a rewatch and just found it tiresome and over the top. Still some good moments and so many awesome lines and memes, but rewatchability was nonexistent for me and the narration was grinding this time around.

So I ended up leaving it off when this came around.
