You can draw whatever conclusions you'd like from that. IMO there were 1-2 plays where he maybe had a chance to find a hole if he'd reacted quicker. On the other hand, it seems like his OL was getting blown off the ball on a few of those plays. Basically, I think he could've done better at improvising when things broke down, but at the same time it doesn't look like his OL was opening up the holes he was expecting to hit.

Different take from me on those runs after reviewing the tape...
First run - clearly was his best of the night and probably better than anything he did last season. He made a nice side step/jump cut to the left while in the hole and I thought he did show some, nothing incredible, in burst plus he has always been an RB that finishes his runs. Meaning he gets an extra yard or two after contact.
Play #2: Out of 21 personnel (2TEs/1RB)...good to see no wasted movement in his first step towards the ball instead of laterally...shows he knew exactly where the play was supposed to be run (unlike last year)...saw a good push from the OL on this one vs. a stout DL and felt that TR got what he could on this play which wasn't a bad result...
Play #3 This was 11 personnel but you can see the Jets in an Over front and that is going to be a problem for them to block this one right from the formation...I would imagine in reg season this would have been an audible by Luck but they aren't game planning and want to see how players react...You can see the Outside LB comes unblocked, recognizes run immediately and scrapes down the LOS...if he had been just chipped by the tackle, TR might have found the crease to the left for a decent gain but overall not much he could do here imo...
Play #4 - This is the same formation 11 personnel as play #3 just flipped. Almost looks like the same play to the other side (think Madden
...except this time they are pulling the guard around but he runs up and basically blocks no one... he should have at least kicked out the end or taken on the LB...TR had to make something out of nothing here with 2 defenders getting to him in the hole pretty easily...
Play #5 - 11 Personnel Bunch - tons of penetration and almost a jail break on this one...terrible job by the oline here but I don't think running 11 personnel vs. a Jets DL front is smart and would probably not be the choice in a reg season game, particularly at the goalline... My take-aways from these 5 plays is first to say, its 5 plays in the 1st preseason game guys so let's all just give it a couple more weeks and see how game #3 looks....
Clearly this OL is not very good but I did see some plays where they simply missed some blocks that were there and could have been decent gains. I think they will get coached up and improve from here and, while TR still lacks the type of vision backs that make big runs have, I still see him being able to pick up a lot of 5-10 yard gains on plays and able to handle a heavy workload...lastly let's remember he is very solid in the passing games and adding in checkdowns and putting him in open space vs. DBs, is going to be mismatch in his favor. I would not panic yet but take a "hold" position at this point on TR.

That play illustrates what irritates me about Richardson - he has to see the guy blitzing to his right yet he dances around and ends up running right into his OL. Had he made a quick decision to cut left through the hole he likely picks up a few yards.Different take from me on those runs after reviewing the tape...

But Richardson made his presence felt after returning, running with the sort of determination and decisiveness that gives the Colts hope he can rebound from a subpar 2013 season. Richardson says he's healthier now than he was entering his two previous pro seasons, and he looks it.
Analysis: Richardson has drawn a lot of criticism for, among other things, his inability to come anywhere close to matching Donald Brown's production last season. To his credit, he is a more than capable receiver with plenty of power. With Vick Ballard already done for the year and the injury-prone Ahmad Bradshaw as his only capable backup, Richardson may be set up for a massive workload. For that reason alone, he is a more than viable flex option.
Why even write the report? Don't let the popular opinion prevent you from owning a dynamic back on the cheap. His price will never be lower! Haters, keep on hating!

I'm with you on that one. In a year where there are a ton of question marks and RBBC, a clear cut starter position alone should be worth something. People are seemingly unwilling to toss out last year's stats, despite the odds being kind of stacked against TRich in terms of expectations. He's healthy, has a full year with his current team, and is part of a balanced offense. I'm not really understanding the hate, while people continue to pump the broken down Foster and Rice or the unproven Gerhart and Jennings. Does Richardson have the potential to fail? Sure. But his ceiling, to me at least, is sky high.

My personal strategy is to make my opponents take the unknown, especially at the price those guys are coming at. We know that TRich is capable of great things and has had a whole offseason to learn and get integrated into what is looking like a high profile offense. He had one great (or at least very solid) season and one down season. That's it. He's played two seasons, one of which was for two different teams and was never entirely healthy. At 23, he's got a lot more upside, to me, then a back up being forced into a starter position on a team that is going to be playing from behind every week (Gerhart) or a backup being put into a possible RBBC of a West Coast Offense (Jennings).Kool-Aid Larry said:

RB is supposed to be an instinctive position - see the hole, run through it, try to make people miss. The way Richardson runs is - hope there's no one there and drag them for a few yards if they are.

I don't have a hard number since what I really want to see is him making good decisions running the ball and being more explosive through the hole, but 4.0 YPC would change my mind.

But it's not that easy. Offensive lines aren't the same for all NFL teams... The concept of the position is the same, however. That's like saying WR is an instinctive position, you get open and catch the ball.

He needs to beat out the other RBs in Indy to grab the clear featured role. > 4 YPC would be nice, but just not getting massively outplayed by every other RB on the roster would be a massive step in the right direction. If we're talking about him as an NFL RB, the counting stats aren't as compelling as efficiency metrics relative to the other players on the team. If / when Bradshaw gets hurt, it's entirely possible that Richardson can compile his way to a volume-centric decent FF finish, while still sucking real football-wise, like he did in 2012.To turn your question around, at what point will you finally admit that he just sucks? 1/3 of the way through the season if he's sharing the load with and getting outplayed by the other RBs and plodding along at under 3.5 YPC, will that finally be enough evidence? Or will he still need more time to learn the plays?

Fair enough. None of those were unreasonable. I guess the rest is up to him. As for your question Lion, I am one of the biggest Richardson supporters. But if he gets outplayed this season and ends up in an equal share situation I think I will be ready to move on. The "I don't know the playbook" excuse is no longer valid in my eyes. It HAS to happen this year. I'm not expecting him to go gangbusters but he better not end up in a timeshare. That would be the breaking point for me. Part of his appeal (for me) is that he has the potential to be "The Guy" in Indy. If he blows that again, I'm open to moving him. I'm sitting on 5 first rounders in next year's draft just in case!

You mention the other RBs in Indy as if there are some. As far as I can see it's only TRich and brittle Bradshaw.

Donald Brown wasn't exactly seen as a serious threat last year after Bradshaw and Ballard both went down. Richardson was SO bad last year that literally anyone signed off of the street would have been better. If he doesn't improve significantly, it won't take anyone special to totally kill his FF value.

True, but there really isn't much on the open market, they invested heavily in TRich, and he's had a year to learn the offense, and let us not forget this is only his third NFL season ever. I agree with your thought that if he can't cut it this season (probably within the first 4ish weeks) he's probably the garbage the haters paint him to be. But in the current RB situation for fantasy, a rather clear cut number one in a good offense is a pretty good deal at his fifth-ish round ADP.

Fully agree that Richardson gets first crack and every benefit of the doubt given the investment. Where I differ is in what I think he's capable of doing with that opportunity. And if he's still sucking after a few games, I think the Colts will turn elsewhere, even to the street if need be, and even a random dude off the street could probably do better than Richardson's feeble effort last year.

I can get behind that, there's certainly some risk with Richardson, but compared to whats out there at his ADP, I just don't understand why people are writing him off. I currently have him as an RB2/Flex.

Jesus Christ, I'd say that's a little extreme no? Even if his career implodes I'm sure he has a lot he can still do. Sports wise how about Oden, Ryan Leaf, Sam Bowie? They failed pretty massively too, but life goes on. Take a Prozac and chill
